The Solemnity of Mary, The Holy Mother of God

The Solemnity of Mary, The Holy Mother of God

The Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God falls exactly one week after Christmas, the end of the octave of Christmas. It is fitting to honour Mary as Mother of Jesus, following the birth of Christ. When Catholics celebrate the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God we are not only honouring Mary, who was chosen among all women throughout history to bear God incarnate, but we are also honouring our Lord, who is fully God and fully human. Calling Mary "mother of God" is the highest honour we can give Mary. Just as Christmas honours Jesus as the "Prince of Peace," the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God honours Mary as the "Queen of Peace" This solemnity, falling on New Year's Day, is also designated the World Day of Peace.

World Day of Prayer for Peace

Popes Message for 2012 World Day of Peace

It is urgent to educate young people in justice and peace Young people today, can offer new hope for the sense of frustration at the crisis looming over society, the world of labour and the economy. This conviction of the Pope forms the background of the message for the 45th World Day of Peace which will be celebrated January 1. Benedict XVI also appeals to all the components of society to pay attention to this unease and its underlying idealism. The Pontiff speaks with concern about the apprehensions of young people - especially how difficult it is to form a family and find stable employment, and recalls the centrality of the question of education. Parents are the first educators, he underscores, because family is the first school in which we are trained in justice and peace. Benedict XVI asks politicians to also offer young people, a transparent image of politics as a genuine service to the good of all. We must educate ourselves in compassion, solidarity, working together, fraternity, in being active within the community and concerned to raise awareness about national and international issues and the importance of seeking adequate mechanisms for the redistribution of wealth, the promotion of growth, cooperation for development and conflict resolution.

Organ donation is a peculiar form of witness to charity. In a period like ours, often marked by various forms of selfishness, it is ever more urgent to understand how the logic of free giving is vital to a correct conception of life. Indeed, a responsibility of love and charity exist that commits one to make of their own life a gift to others, if one truly wishes to fulfill oneself. As the Lord Jesus has taught us, only whoever gives his own life can save it. (cf. Lk 9:24) Pope Benedict XVI One organ and tissue donor can save up to 8 lives and enhance the lives of 75 others. Register today at BeADonor.ca. For additional resources you can also visit www.archtoronto.org/organdonation.

Philippine Flood Relief

Nearly 1000 people are reported dead and hundreds more are still missing after flash floods in the Philippines after Typhoon Washi hit southern Mindanao Island and surrounding areas on the weekend. An estimated 40,000 people, many of whom were already desperately poor, are now living in evacuation centres after losing their homes and possessions. Working with our partners at the Canadian Catholic Organization for Development & Peace/Caritas Canada, the Catholic Churchs official relief representative in Canada, funds will be channelled to Caritas organizations on the ground in the Philippines. Caritas teams are travelling through Mindanao to help families affected by the flooding. In particular, Caritas Philippines, known within the country as NASSA, has sent a team to the Diocese of Iligan, where the local government is said to be running out of relief supplies. Teams are assessing the damage and coordinating the emergency response.
Those wishing to help may do so in the following ways: - Online through the Archdiocese of Toronto website: www.archtoronto.org; - By phone through the Development office 416934-3411 - Through the parish, making cheques payable to: OLS Parish Philippines Flood Relief
