CHAPTER 4

FOUNDATION SYSTEM
4.0

Preamble
In the design of foundation system, the stress-strain compatibility of the super structure, sub structure and the bearing strata should be satisfied both individually and as a combined system. In view of this, the following data are needed for the design of foundation system, defined in terms of the type of sub structure and the bearing strata characteristics. The super structure characteristics along with the loading pattern on the sub structure.

The sub soil characteristics that define the required substructure configuration for a safe transfer of super-structural loads to the bearing strata. Considering the above aspects of the foundation design, the suitable type of foundation system is presented below. 4.1

Proposed Structures:
The proposed structure consists of single basement + Stilt floor + 10 floors. The exact details of column loads are not available at the time of preparing this report. However, for this kind of structures, the column loads could be of the order of 10000 kN to 12000 kN. These loads are mentioned only to provide insight on the loading on the bearing strata, such that an appropriate conceptual visualization of foundation system can be made and do not have any bearing on the design of either sub are super structure design. The sub and super structures design shall be done as per actual load estimates and analysis.

4.1

Bearing Strata:
For the kind of proposed structure and the sub soil conditions, the bearing strata shall be the underlying hard fractured granite.

4.2

Foundation System:
For the kind of proposed structured, only deep pile foundation anchored in to the underlying hard fractured rock shall be adopted. Since, rock anchoring is required and also the site is located in highly built up area, only bored cast in situ piles with direct mud circulation technique shall be adopted. It is not advisable to adopt any driven technique to be adopted for the installation of the piles. The safe load carrying capacity of three different diameters of the piles are worked out and presented below:

Since, the load carrying capacity of the piles not only depends up on the soil/rock strength parameters, but also depends upon the execution care, experience and methodology, it is customary to consider the theoretical load estimates as the provisional design loads and shall be confirmed by conducting the pile load tests as per the guide lines laid down in IS:2911-Part-IV. Apart from the above, the pile load carrying capacity shall be checked with the structural capacity of the pile and the minimum of the two shall be adopted for the design of the foundation system. Typical computations are presented in Annexure.
