Background of the Research Nowadays, the exchanges of information, ideas, and thought have broadly

spread very fast through both the print and electronic media. Any society from all over the world is able to consume some information by reading the books, novels, newspapers, and even from the internet which is widely available. For example, the Indonesian people may easily read the literary art such as novel, poem, and poetry that written by the well known international author or writer. At the reverse side, the Indonesian writer has produced some literary arts which could be read and studied by another people in particular society abroad. As we may notice, at some book store we can relatively easily get some international books about economy, social, politics, education, etc. The cultural and language gap seemingly do not exist due to the role of translator who has worked hard to transfer the message of those books. In other words, the texts have been already passed the translation process. This may bring a good positive impact to our society. They become more educated as well as bring additional value to their selves and their environment. Speaking of translation, Machali (2000:9) states that translation is both process and product. As we see the translation, what we read is the product. Meanwhile, the act of translating done by translator is the process. The readers seemingly are unable to feel such dilemma experienced by the translator during the process in order to have a good decision. One thing is certain, the readers will have a

clear understanding about the text since it has been changed into their mother tongue. For a translator, the translation process will face for at least two obstacles namely linguistics and non linguistics barrier. In order to result a good translation, one should eliminate such barriers. Furthermore, the two common obstacles in translating which every translator must pay attention to them are; first, linguistics barrier including sentence, clause, phrase, and word. Second, non linguistics which deals with the culture knowledge on both source language and target language (Nababan, 1999:20). Regarding with the obstacles above, as a translator, he or she should employ such tools namely method and technique. According to Newmark (1988:45-48) there are eight translation methods which can be divided in two part; one which emphasizes on source language and another emphasizes on target language. Methods emphasizing on source language are; word for word translation, literal translation, faithful translation and semantic translation. Meanwhile, methods emphasizing on target language are; adaptation, free translation, idiomatic translation, and communicative translation. Also, there are at least eight techniques which is generally used in translating; transposition, modulation, description, additional explanation, footnote,fonology, formal, and cultural equivalence(Hoed, 2006:72-78). Futhermore, there are two ideology in translation namely; foreignization and domestication. A translator may implement such method, technique, and ideology to assist his or her work. Mostly, translating is done from a foreign language to mother tongue. It means that the source language will be certain foreign language and the target language will be certain mother tongue. For example, the most common translating is from English into Indonesian language or bahasa. It is believed that doing such translation into mother tongue is much easier instead of into second language. As a translator, it is often that he or she has to translate form mother tongue into foreign language as good as he or she has translated the text into mother tongue. As a student of English Education Program, it would be both a challenge and an opportunity of

how to figure out the methods, techniques and the ideology implemented in such translation process. Furthermore, the translation is done from the mother tongue (Bahasa) into a foreign language (English). Indeed, it could be a reliable parameter of how the students in University Indraprasta PGRI, especially those who are from the English Education Program, have already improved their English Mastery. Its no doubt to be a good translator at least someone must possess of language competence. Other competences are textual competence, subject competence, cultural competence, and transfer competence. Indonesian novel entitled laskar Pelangi has considered one of the best novel in Indonesia which has been internationally acknowledged. Nationally, it has been national best seller with a fantastic sales record. Up to this year, at least 5 million exemplars have been sold out (www.sastra-indonesia.com, 15 June 2011:1). The novel telling about a group of children who struggle for their dream at the very limited condition socially and economically has attracted many works of literature lovers around the world. Furthermore, the novel has been successfully adapted into wide screen as well as live musical opera. Internationally, this novel has been translated into many languages. Its English version was released for the first time at December 2009. It is 26 years old American Anggie Kilbane, a journalist as well as an alumni of University of Indonesia who translated the novel into English version entitled the Rainbow Troops. The task of translating that has been done by Angie is not an easy task. She relatively found the process difficult. As Angie Kilbane says in her translation novel: Translating this masterpiece was no easy task. It took seven months. I worked on it at home, in taxis, at cafes, on airplanes, in airport and during lunch at school. I worked on it on java, Bali, Sumatra, and Belitong; in Singapore, America, Malaysia, and South Korea. This translation has seen its fair share of places. Some parts were easier than others, and I had a lot of help during the way. One thing that was very important and difficult to master was conveying the correct emotion in English in the same way Andrea conveyed it in the Indonesian version. Along with trying to tap into universal emotions, the overall construction of irony in the book was one of the biggest challenges

in taking on this translation, as was trying to figure out how we wanted to translate the words laskar pelangi. (Kilbane, 2009:466-467) Regarding to all the fact above, the writer then sees that the implementation of method, technique, and ideology in order to assist the translation process is interesting to be researched, particularly how those kinds of tool had been employed by Angie Kilbane on her Indonesian English translation of Laskar Pelangi. It is then the chief reason why he chooses THE TRANSLATION METHODS, TECHNIQUES, AND IDEOLOGY USED IN INDONESIAN ENGLISH NOVEL; ANGIE KILBANES THE RAINBOW TROOPS FROM ANDREA HIRATAS LASKAR PELANGI as his research title.
2. Limitation of the Problem

In this research, the writer makes a limitation on point of discussion by studying and analyzing only the method, technique and ideology of translation and their uses in translating in order to eliminate the linguistics and non linguistics gap that appear between the source language and target language.
3. Formulation of the Problem

The problems of the research that the writer would like to find and answer are as follows; 3.1 What kind of translation method is used by translator in translating the Indonesian novel Laskar Pelangi into its English version ? 3.2 What kind of translation technique is used by translator in translating the Indonesian novel Laskar Pelangi into its English version ? 3.3 What kind of translation ideology is used by translator in translating the Indonesian novel Laskar Pelangi into its English version ? 4. Objectives of Study

The writer really expects to give such contribution to the field of translation in Indonesia. Hopefully, it could be a booster for the development of the translation activity. 5.2 Practically: Through this research, the writer would like to contribute to the society. Especially for those who have more attention to translation or those who are studying translation regarding to the use of translation method, technique, and ideology in order to result a good translation.

6. Theoretical Review Previous Study

The relevant research to this research is done by Sutarno the student of North Sumatra University (USU) entitled the Translation Method, Techniques, about the Impact of technique, method, Ideology of the translation to the quality of translation of Medical Surgical Nursing in Indonesia.
