ACTIVE AND PASSIVE VOICE CONSTRUCTIONS


Active voice Subject + verb +object Fisherman sells the fish Passive voice Object changes to subject +verb to be The fish is (by fisherman) Note: v3 is often called the past participle

A sentence in the active voice when the subject or the doer of the action is at the beginning of a sentence: Example: Fisherman brings the boat The dog kept the pound I bit the tail of the fish A sentence in the passive voice when the object or the receiver of the action is at the beginning of a sentence: Example: The boat is brought by fisherman The pound was kept by the dog The tail of the fish was bitten by me

WHEN CHANGING AN ACTIVE SENTENCE TO A PASSIVE


The object

of the active sentence becomes the subject in the passive sentence The subject of the active form becomes the doer / object in the passive form

FORMS

The passive voice is formed by using the suitable tense of the verb be, followed by the past participle of the active verb, as shown in the table below:
