METHOD STUDY IN MAINTENANCE

D.S.S.C.P.Subasinghe E/04/288

This is more efficient technique which is considered as one of the most valuable aids in reducing the volume of maintenance.

They think that this can not be undertaken by them because it is 1. Time consuming 2. Cumbersome

Introduction
The approach for this is known as DOM (Designing Out Maintenance) technique.
1.

This procedure specially designed in order to;

Guide the G id th engineers thi ki i thinking when h considering a problem. Takes no longer than he is act to spend on considering alternative means only. Save the engineers time.

This method has logic and disciplined approach.

2.

3.

Booklet of questions
The elimination of the function. Alternative means of performing the functions. Improvement in the present means of performing the function.

The booklet also suggests

The actual work involved in the existing method of rectifying the defect.

The actual work involved in the means of avoiding a shut down to effect the repair.

The Problem
Form (i) Outline the problem
Question Question Question Question Question Question (A) Job (B) Function of defective unit (C) Total maintenance cost (D) Shutdown losses (F) Limits of the investigation (E) Other information

Form (ii) Elimination of function

Question A (i) To what unit does the defective part belong? Question A (ii) What is the purpose of unit? Question A (iii) What can be done to eliminate the purpose? Question A (iv) What should be done to Q ti (i ) Wh t h ld b d t eliminate the purpose? Question B Financial justification of new method. Question C Degree of new system compared with the present standard.

Form (iii ) Substitution of present means

Question A (i) What are the means of carrying out the operations which this equipment performs? Question A (ii) What is the ideal p procedure for doing this? g Question A (iii) At what points must we depart fro the ideal in devising a practical method? Question A (iv) What other practical means can be used to most nearly satisfy the ideal procedure? Advantages and disadvantages of each)

Form (iv) Modification of present design

Question A (i) What are the defects necessitating repair or replacement? Question A (ii) What are the main features of the present process or design of equipment, bearing on defects? Question A (iii) What are the possible causes of the defects? h d f ? Question A (iv) How can each cause be eliminated? Question A (v) How can each defect be eliminated or reduced? Question A (vi) How should cause and effects be eliminated or reduced?

Form (v) Improvement of method of manufacture or repair and installation of present equipment
This form comprises the orthodox method study questions to deal with the study of the methods of manufacture, or the activities in the repairing of the defective article and the reinstallation of the part.

Form (vi)

Plant shut-down

Question A (i) Period of stoppage. Question B (i) Estimated capitol expenditure. Question B (ii) Estimated period before becoming effective. Question A (iii) How can the shutshut down be avoided or reduced? Question A (iv) How should the shutdown be avoided or reduced? Question A (ii) Is the shut-down necessary for this repair installation as done?

Advantages of the DOM booklet

Form (vii ), Form (viii ) and Form (ix)
The purpose and procedure in these forms is lf i self explanatory and need no comment l t d d t
Since here they are doing concise means of investigating the many maintenance problems met by engineers and even if negative results are obtained they offer complete information which can be supplemented later instead of wasting time in retracting well worn steps. When a maintenance engineer leaves his section, his experience with major problems is not lost to the company. The logical pattern of questions can, within a very short time, help the engineer to develop the method study approach to all his problems. This assists in reducing the volume of maintenance.
