Chapter-1 Introduction: Mobile: In the modern world, marked by hustle and bustle coupled with ceaseless activities, people

have come to depend increasingly on mobile phones to carry out their day to day chores. Cell phone is a man-made communicator, the application of which is confined to the area of roaming. It is applied in a wide variety of settings at work, at home, and for convenience and security. This equipment has become such an integral part of life today that it enslaves man to a great extent. Cell phones are available with an incredible range of functions. Depending on the cell phone model, one can store information, make task or do lists, keep track of appointments and set reminders, use the built-in calculator for simple mathematics, send or receive e-mails, get information from the internet, play games and integrate other devices such as Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs), MP3 players and GPS receivers. Cell phones provide up-to-date information about business and economy through SMS and MMS. In addition, the greatest advantage derived in the use of cell phone is that it saves a lot of time and energy of man. Hence, the absence of cell phone renders man miserable and its very presence becomes all the more indispensable to him. The Invention of Mobile Phones: Digital, wireless and cellular roots were introduced in 1940s. The Bahrain Telephone Company (Batelco External Link) began operating a commercial cellular telephone system. It probably marks the first time in the world when individuals started using mobile cellular radio. And the first mobile phones made their appearance on June 17, 1946. They were installed by South Western Bell Telephone Company, in the cars of two different customers one at St. Louis and another at Missouri of the United States of America. Bell Laboratories introduced the idea of cellular communication in 1947 with the police car technology under the guidance of Joel Engel, Head of Research, Bell Laboratories. However, Motorola was the first to incorporate the technology into a portable device. Martin Cooper, a former General Manager for the systems division at Motorola, is considered the inventor of the first modern portable handset in the year 1973. Role of Mobile Phones: Business Connectivity -Traditionally Business Men needed to know about the

place of the other person at a specific time but with mobile phones, they can now contact him from whichever part of the city they could be especially where there is coverage. And hence no communication between them is missed. Economic Development - Where communication is smooth, economies are strengthened. Since there was no connectivity worldwide Business Growth was slow. Mobile phones have contributed towards speedy flow of finances, goods and services from one point to the other. Political Advancement - Politicians keep in contact with the constituencies in realtime. Failure to remain connected to one's constituency or electorate cuts the political figure out from being reached. Any meaningful support of the people comes from the guarantee of availability of the political figure to those who elected him/her to office. Mobile Health - Doctors can now be contacted for any emergencies saving lives. Before, if a Doctor left his practice, you would either need to know where he stays or where he was going in order to know how to locate him. Mobile phones make it easy.

Advantages: * Nothing more than a cell phone comes to great help in emergency. You are driving by the freeway and the vehicle jams and cell phone comes to your rescue. You are stuck in a lone place, again call somebody and ask for directions. * Parents can be a little less worried about their kids by being in constant touch with them. * If youre a net-savvy, you can have Internet handy all the time and anywhere the signal of your cell phone provider can reach. * From the industry and economy point of view, cell phone companies are flourishing with market capital in billions. This is a good thing for the economy to be smooth and healthy. * Companies find it yet another medium to advertise their products; so another medium to reach the consumers.

* Although cell phone use can be dangerous while driving but sometimes it can be a time-saver - you are driving and simultaneously discussing some urgent matter as well can be a great help at times.

Dis-advantages: *Cell phones are increasingly becoming a means of cheating during (especially teens) examinations and other kinds of ability tests. * Health of those living in the vicinity of cell phone towers is becoming a growing concern. The towers also emit strong electromagnetic signals, which can be health hazard for those living nearby. * There have been cases of cell phone blasts, due to the excessive heating up of its battery. This can be a fatal issue. The battery parts and other electronic parts of a cell phone can be environmental hazard if not disposed off properly through approved means. * The continuous exposure of signal to and from our cell phone can be a cancer concern, although to a meagre amount- research is still going on. However, the mobile phone industry has long resisted any suggestion of a link to cancer, though it accepts that mobile phone radiation does affect the electrical activity in the brain. * A cell phone can be helpful while driving and talking in case of urgent matters but increasingly it is becoming cause of accidents because it deviates the attention of a driver. * The mobile phone advertisements through messages are becoming a pain for the cell phone users.
