1 Introducing the text
Start with a brief discussion about puppets.
Have you ever seen a puppet play? Have you ever made a puppet with your hands? Have you have made shadow puppets? What kind of text is this?

Establish that it is a How to do it text where following the instructions is very important.

2 Reading the text

Follow while I read the rst two sentences.

Read the rst two sentences. Ask:

What do you need to make shadow puppets?

Note that this activity can be done in a darkened room using a torch but shadows can also be made in a room with articial light casting shadows on a light-coloured wall or white paper on a table top. Keep in mind that the aim of the activity is to read and understand this procedural text, not to make shadows.
MAKE A SPIDER

Focus on the instructions for making a spider.

Can you read this rst heading? What clues could you use to help you read this word [spider] if you hadnt seen it before?

Discuss using both the picture clue and the spelling of the word. Breaking the word into syllables will also help sp-id-er.
Can you make the spider just by looking at the picture? Lets read the instructions.

Have the student read along with you as you read.

What are the numbers for in front of each sentence? MAKE A DOG

Then look at the instructions for the dog puppet. Ask questions such as the following to establish the relevant vocabulary.
What are these instructions about? How do you think you make the dogs eye? Which part of your hand is its ear? If you move your little nger, what do you think the dog does?

2 Reading the text (cont)

Encourage the student to read the instructions aloud, or have them read along with you.
What does step number one say to do? Were you right about how to make the different parts of the dog? MAKE A SWAN

Follow a similar process for the swan instructions. Support the student as appropriate.

VK

3 Doing words verbs

Look at the instructions for making a spider. The words cross and wiggle tell you what actions to do. They are the doing words, which are also called verbs. In the rst instruction for making a spider, you have to cross one hand over the other. I could give you another instruction that begins with the action word cross: Cross the room to the other side. What is the action word in the second instruction? Can you give me another instruction that starts with wiggle?

Work through the rest of the text. First underline and read the verbs, then create new instructions using the same words.

PA Ph VK

4 Rhyming words

Now lets think about rhyming words. What words can you think of that rhyme with the word make?

Encourage the student to experiment orally with rhyming words and nonsense syllables.
What words can you think of that rhyme with the word bend?

Repeat the oral activity.

Now lets look at Activity A on the Student Activity Sheet. All the words you have to nd are action words, or verbs.

Assist with reading the clues as necessary.

5 One syllable or two?

Listen carefully while I read the rst sentence of Make a Dog. I will clap once for each syllable.

Read slowly, emphasising each syllable clearly with a clap.

What is one word in this sentence that has one syllable? What is one word in this sentence that has two syllables? (nger) Now lets clap along while I read the second sentence, Point your thumb up to make the dogs ear. Notice that all the words in this sentence have only one syllable. How could we change some words in this sentence, or add new words, so that there will be some two-syllable words in the sentence? For example, we could change dogs to puppys or puppets.

Other possibilities include upwards instead of up, create instead of make. Repeat with a dierent sentence if appropriate.

6 Words within words

Complete Activity B on the Student Activity Sheet. Shadow contains had, do and show. Puppets contains pup, up, ups, pet and pets. If appropriate, you could extend this activity by looking for words with the letters in any order. Puppet contains the words

Extension Activities Make your own hand puppet

Design a new shadow puppet. Write down some instructions to explain how to make it.
