Only competent trained personnel are to operate the penetrometer and should carry out the soil testing Ensure that the guage of the penetrometer is functioning well and properly calibrated. Personnel must never work alone All testing tools must be properly maintained regularly. When cleaning the penetrometer and its accessories, avoid contact with the skin,eyes and clothing. Remove all sources of ignition and wash hands thoroughly. Emergency rescue equipment must be provided and all personnel should be trained on how to use them should there be an emergency. Warning system for mobile equipment must be in place to prevent vehicles from accidentally falling into the trench. All employees are required to stand away from equipment that is being loaded or unloaded Access to and exit from the trench is required . Trenches 4ft or more in depth should be provided with a fixed means of egress. Metal ladder should be used with caution,particularly when electric utilities are present.
