School bullying
is on the decline
Bullying has not been much of
an issue in the Medford school
district, in part because of the
culture fostered in the district, Di-
rector of Pupil Personnel Servic-
es Dr. Gale Ferraro said.
Ferraro says it has taken some
time to understand the scope of
the new harassment, intimida-
tion and bullying (HIB) policy
handed down by the state on Sept.
1.
It was not clear to us what
constituted HIB, Ferraro said.
Although theres a very specific
definition, there are a lot of gray
areas, and I think that as time has
gone on, weve been able to get
better at trying to determine
what falls under HIB and what
is actually a discipline issue.
The law calls for a district-wide
anti-bullying coordinator, a
school anti-bullying specialist
and a school safety team. As dis-
trict anti-bullying coordinator,
Ferraro oversees HIB procedures
and protocols.
We always err on the side of
caution, she said, noting the dis-
trict investigates all cases of pos-
sible HIB.
Ferraro said the number of re-
ported incidents has declined and
that most cases involve discipline
issues.
When you have students call-
ing each other names, is it harass-
ment or is it just typical for that
developmental level? she asked.
And while most believe harass-
ment happens over time, the law
says one incident could be consti-
tuted as harassment.
Ferraro said district anti-bully-
ing personnel talk with the al-
leged victims, and the alleged ha-
rassers, as well as to witnesses, to
determine the seriousness of sit-
uations.
Medford Township schools
have always had character educa-
tion and programs in place to try
to diminish any kind of harass-
ment, intimidation or bullying
behavior in our students, she
said. Were not seeing any great
number of cases of HIB, because
our students are educated that its
not appropriate.
Ferraro said there has been a
lot of training since September
on what HIB is, and noted the
first week in October was the first
mandated Week of Respect.
So our schools have many,
many activities to really high-
light what bullying is, and really
to educate our students about it,
she said.
Ferraro said she thinks she
sees much less HIB in Medford
because it is a K-8 district, and
that most bullying goes on in high
school.
She was expecting more at the
middle school, but that has not
been the case.
Weve had very few incidents
of documented HIB, Ferraro
said. We have high expectations
all of our schools have a code of
conduct.
She said students mostly live
up to those expectations.
And sometimes, there are disci-
plinary situations which Ferraro
called teachable moments that
might require counseling but
Donate at kiosk, track online
With a New Year coming up
quickly, many local residents are
eager to make those last minute
donations to charities to get their
final tax deduction of the year.
To make things more conven-
ient, Goodwill Industries, of
Southern NJ & Philadelphia has
installed computerized donation
kiosks at all of its donation cen-
ters and unveiled state-of-the-art
technology that enables donors to
track their giving online, 24-7.
Goodwill Public Relations
Manager Juli Lundberg said do-
nating to Goodwill is simple: the
donor pulls up, an attendant un-
loads the car, the donor puts his
or her contact information into
the kiosk as well as what was do-
nated, and the donor gets a re-
ceipt.
The next time a donor comes
with donations, the donor will
only have to enter his or her
phone number.
And with iDonate at www.good
willnj.org, the donor inputs his or
her phone number and receives a
report of all donations made.
There is no need to keep receipts
for the whole year.
Lundberg said the donation
kiosks have been around for two
years and iDonate launched in
November.
Its just a huge convenience
for donors to be able to see what
theyve done all year, she said,
noting many people have called at
tax time looking for receipts.
Lundberg said donations are
strong this year, especially in

The following items are taken
from reports on file with the Med-
ford Police Department:
Medford police have arrested
and charged a Marlton woman
and a Medford Lakes man with
staging a residential burglary in
August, police announced recent-
ly.
Police say they had been called
to a report of a burglary on the
100 block of South Main Street. A
report was filed that indicated the
home had been broken into and
ransacked, and that electronics
were stolen from the home, val-
ued at around $500, reports said.
A second resident at the home
told police that she, too, had elec-
tronic items stolen, reports said.
However, a police investigation
revealed that the items alleged to
have been stolen were actually
sold to a local electronics store,
and were, in fact, never stolen, po-
lice said.
Both were released on their
own recognizance, pending a
hearing.
On Tuesday, Dec. 13, at 7:16
p.m., Medford police, fire and
EMS were dispatched to the area
of Mt. Holly Road and Brace Road
for a report of a motor vehicle
crash. Upon police arrival police
discovered that the one vehicle in-
volved struck a tree on the south
bound shoulder of Mt. Holly
Road.
Through the course of the on-
scene investigation, it was discov-
ered the driver was under the in-
fluence of alcohol and narcotics.
The driver was injured as a result
of the crash, and was transported
by Medford EMS to Virtua-Mt.
Holly.
The driver was traveling north
on Mt. Holly Road when he ran off
the roadway and struck a tree on
the southbound shoulder. The
driver was charged with drunken
driving, reckless driving, failure
to maintain lane, failure to exhib-
it documents, open alcoholic con-
tainer in motor vehicle, posses-
sion of cocaine and possession of
drug paraphernalia. He was re-
leased, pending a hearing.

SPEAK UP
The Sun welcomes letters from readers.
Brief and to the point is best, so we look for
letters that are 300 words or fewer. Include
your name, address and phone number. We
do not print anonymous letters. Send letters
to news@medfordsun.com, via fax at 856-

I
n a couple of weeks, The Sun will
feature a look ahead at the big is-
sues in your community in 2012.
As part of the reporting process, our
writers will be interviewing local
elected officials and administrators.
Well ask them about their views on
the coming year. What issues from
2011 will linger into 2012? Are there
new initiatives or challenges ahead?
What are their plans, as the communi-
ties enter a new year?
Now, were asking you, our readers,
to share your thoughts on what the big
issues of 2012 will be.
Do you have questions youd like us
to ask your local mayor or school su-
perintendent? Do you wonder about
something that has been going on for a
long time in your town, but never
seems to get resolved? Are there mat-
ters that, for whatever reason, never
seem to attract enough attention ei-
ther from those of us in the media or
from those who are in a position to
make needed changes?
Let us know. And then well make
sure to put your questions to those
who have the power to make a differ-
ence.
Just send us an email with your
thoughts and questions.
The new year is viewed by many as
a blank slate. Its a time to start again,
to tackle challenges that have not been
addressed, or to look to new opportu-
nities that have not been explored.
We want our preview stories to
bring the issues that are important to
you into the spotlight. We want to get
decision-makers on record regarding
their plans to bring issues to a close or
to take advantage of situations that
will be available in 2012.
Dont delay. Send your questions
today, and well get busy tracking
down the answers.
Any questions for leaders?
Whats on your mind as 2012 nears? New issues? Unresolved matters?
2012 almost here
Do you have any questions for deci-
sion-makers as the new year
approaches? Let us know, and then
well ask those in charge for their
answers.

New Jersey feels earthquake
that didnt happen
Did you feel that?
Dozens of New Jersey residents report-
ed feeling an earthquake recently.
But the U.S. Geological Survey said their
equipment didnt register a thing, accord-
ing to the Star-Ledger. So what the heck
was it?
Geophysicist John Bellini, at the U.S. Ge-
ological Surveys Colorado office, said it
might have been thunder (which the Na-
tional Weather Service said was unlikely)
or a sonic boom.
Fighter jets from nearby military bases
might have done it, but the military in its
usual military way is neither confirming
nor denying anything.

No, America is not a
socialist country, yet
This is a response to a Dec. 7 letter to the
editor, Is America a socialist country?
Now maybe certain laws or programs
are socialistic, but we are not a socialist na-
tion not yet anyway.
Socialism, according to Websters, is
Any of various economic and political
theories advocating collective or govern-
mental ownership and administration of
the means of production and distribution
of goods. Or, a system of society or group
living in which there is no private proper-
ty.
Attempts to destroy our private-proper-
ty rights in society are in part the cause of
our current economic malaise.
But you cannot pretend to be free and
have civil rights without economic rights.
To quote Leon Trotsky, a leading social-
ist and revolutionary: In a country where
the sole employer is the state, opposition
means death by slow starvation. The old
principle: who does not work shall not eat,
has been replaced by a new one: who does
not obey shall not eat.
Trotsky just told you all you need to
know about socialism, but Margaret
Thatcher also said: The problem with so-
cialism is that eventually, you run out of
other people's money [to spend].
Any so-called third way between social-
ism and capitalism leads to fascism, aka
crony capitalism that the Occupy move-
ment claims to oppose.
Its no accident President Obama is the
largest recipient of Wall Street campaign
money or that Obama is the head of union
campaign contributions that bought us the
taxpayer-enhanced auto-company bailout.
Or how about the recently disclosed $7.7
trillion yes, trillion of loans made by
the Federal Reserve?
Not even Congress was even aware of
how much or who got the loot, err loans.
How can Congress re-regulate the financial
industry with the Dodd-Frank Bill when
even they dont know?
Its long past the time for grown-up lead-
ership to return to Washington and re-
move government from autopilot, and to
make hard, painful choices to save the re-
public. Time grows short.

BRIEFS
By KATRINA GRANT
The Medford Sun
The holidays are quickly ap-
proaching and for many people,
that means a busy season of shop-
ping, gathering with family and
eating. For many, this does not
leave much time to worry about
diet and exercise, but that doesnt
mean that people cant stay
healthy and fit, experts say. There
are many quick and easy steps
people can take to stay in shape
and eat healthy during the holi-
day season.
It is important for people to
maximize the efficiency of what
they do, Kevin Hamm, fitness di-
rector at Medford Fitness, said.
Interval training is the most ef-
fective way to go for people that
dont have injuries. Twenty- to 30-
minute, high-intensity intervals
are good for people to do. Com-
bine weights and cardio exercis-
es, no rest in between the exercis-
es, keep moving. It gives you a
whole body workout. You do it in
short bursts, get it all done and no
parts of the body miss out.
Efficient workouts are the
way to go, but you want to be
working on these all year, Jim
Bompensa, owner of Body
Physics Fitness in Haddonfield,
said. Cardio and strength exer-
cises at the same time saves a lot
of time. You can work out 30 min-
utes a day and work the full body.
You set up circuits and move from
one exercise to the next.
Outside of daily exercises,
there are things people can do
while out.
Any extra movement you can
add to your day is good, Bompen-
sa said. The more moving a per-
son is doing, the better. If youre
at the mall, parking far away and
walking is a good way to burn
calories.
Burlington County Sheriff
Jean E. Stanfield has announced
the results of a three-day child-
support raid executed recently, a
sweep that resulted in the arrest
of 37 individuals who owed
$507,139 in court-ordered child
support.
This was a cooperative effort
involving law enforcement agen-
cies both within and outside the
county, Stanfield said. Enforc-
ing child-support orders sends a
clear message that the needs of
our children must be met.
This is a critical issue which,
in the grand scheme of things, af-
fects all taxpayers. When child
support goes unpaid, the cost of
care often falls on state and coun-
ty social services and other agen-
cies.
The raid was executed by the
sheriff s department between
Dec. 6 and 8, and involved the as-
sistance of police departments in
Burlington City, Pemberton
Township, Riverside, Willing-
boro, Hamilton Township and
East Greenwich, as well as
Burlington County Central Com-
munications. The arrests in-
volved individuals from 17 munic-
ipalities. Five of those arrested
were on outstanding warrants
unrelated to child support.

Medford.
The community has just been
so generous, she said. I think
the visibility in Medford is just
wonderful.
The Mount Laurel site just
opened this year and is slower
than in Medford. However, Lund-
berg said, people from Marlton,
Shamong, Tabernacle, Pember-
ton and Mount Holly all use the
Medford location.
She said about 40,000 people
have donated and used the kiosks
this year alone.
We need to give our donors
just so much convenience, and so
much great customer service
theyll come back and go out of
their way, Lundberg said.
Donations are Goodwills life-
line to helping local residents
with disabilities and disadvan-
tages gain the job skills needed to
become employed, Goodwill
President and CEO Mark Boyd
said. Beyond providing stellar
customer service, we have invest-
ed in technology to ensure a
pleasant donation experience at
Goodwill.
Investing in your community
and preserving the environment
while receiving a tax break has
never been easier.
Goodwill encourages dona-
tions of gently-used clothing, ac-
cessories, toys, household items,
books, small electronics, comput-
ers and more.
The mass collection and resale
of donated items in Goodwills
area retail stores fund job-train-
ing programs that help local resi-
dents with disabilities and disad-
vantages prepare for and secure
competitive jobs in the communi-
ty.
As a nonprofit, community-
based organization, all donations
to Goodwill are tax deductible,
per IRS law.
Donors are encouraged to keep
an itemized list of donations. The
IRS allows a deduction for each
item, but the donor determines
each items value. Generally, an
items value should be based on
fair market value what the item
would sell for in a thrift store.
For more information on deter-
mining the value of donations,
please visit www.irs.gov.
According to Boyd, the week
between Christmas and New
Years Eve is the busiest time of
year for donations.
With New Years Eve falling
on a Saturday this year, we expect
a huge rush on Friday and Satur-
day, Boyd said. Goodwills dona-
tion centers will be staffed ac-
cordingly to provide donors with
a pleasant experience.
In addition to the following lo-
cations, Goodwill collection bins
can be found in municipality pub-
lic works yards throughout South
and Central Jersey:

Medford Township is advanc-
ing sustainable community prac-
tices by preparing a new munici-
pal master plan element, Med-
ford Township Community De-
sign and Sustainability Plan.
This effort, partially funded
under a grant from the New Jer-
sey Association of Environmen-
tal Commissions, addresses three
aspects of sustainability: Med-
fords traditional built environ-
ment; the natural environment;
and economic/fiscal.
This master plan element
would become a critical compo-
nent to Medfords comprehensive
master plan.
The plan would provide work-
ing documents to advance and im-
plement its sustainability prac-
tices, and preserve its community
designs.
A public presentation and
meeting took place Dec. 20.
The draft document is avail-
able online at www.medfordtown
ship.com and
www.medfordrec.com, and in the
township planning office.
