Experiment: Regulation of Human Body Temperature Loss of Heat through Sweat Production: Heat loss measured at fingertips

Experiment Procedure: 1. Attach a temperature sensor to the fingers of your right arm, as demonstrated in figure 1 above 2. Start the discovery either from the discovery panel or from discover the IT software: click the run button on the left tool bar. 3. Follow temperature changes in your fingertip, register on your computers monitor, till it stabilizes about 5 minutes. 4. Cover the hand holding the temperature sensor, with a plastic bag. 5. Place inside the bag a humidity sensor and an additional temperature sensor. 6. Tie the bag covering your hand, t prevent air flow into and out of the bag. 7. Follow changes in humidity and temperature inside the bag, for about 10 minutes. 8. Remove the plastic bag from your hand. Follow changes in the humidity and temperature inside the plastic as well as the temperature of your fingertip, for additional 5 minutes.

Experiment Result:

Graph of Temperature against Time

Discussion: From the experiment, after the hand was covering with a plastic bag, the temperature level measured inside the bag is increase and the humidity level measured inside the bag also increase. The cause the changes in the temperature of fingertips during the experiment is the environment temperature. The temperature in plastic bag is increase because the air inside the plastic was trapped and caused the environment in plastic become warm. Therefore, it caused the changes in the temperature of the fingertips during the experiment.

During the experiment, the humidity of the skin is increase. This is due to the high temperature environment in plastic bag. When our hand move from a cool to a warmer environment, our hand temperature will increase as more blood is directed to the surface of hand skin. The skin surface is warmed as a result of radiant heat from the surrounding air in plastic bag. Then, the heart rate and pulse rate increase and our hand may start to sweat. Sweating is process our body to cool down. The body is always trying to maintain an even body temperature. Sweating reduces body heat through a process known as evaporative cooling. Therefore, the humidity decreases as the temperature increase. Humidity (water vapor content of air) plays a significant role in heat loss, especially by evaporation. In high humidity climates, the air already contains many water molecules, which decreases the airs capacity to accept more water. This is due to the concentration gradient, which is decreased in cases of high humidity. The high humidity limits sweat evaporation, and hence, heat loss. On the other hand, low humidity promotes heat loss through evaporation, especially during exercise. Relative humidity is simply the amount of water vapor in the air in relation to how much water vapor that air can hold. Colder air cannot hold as much water vapor as warmer air. Thus, as temperature decreases, the relative humidity will increase, and likewise, as temperature increases, the relative humidity will decrease. All this assumes no water vapor is added or subtracted from the air. Besides that, the humidity in the bag decreased immediately after the removal of the bag because the hand is recovered from the warm environment to the normal environment. The source of water accumulated in the bag is from the sweat produced. The water accumulated in the plastic bag is disappears after the removal of the bag from the hand. This is because the process of heat loss from the hand is stop and return to normal. The conclusion is warming up the hand held inside the plastic bag causes the temperature increase and humidity decrease. The process of heat loss from the hand will reduce and stop after the hand was removed from the plastic bag.

Conclusion: As the temperature increase, the humidity will decrease.
