Title Grades Estimated Time Lesson Author Overview Film History Research Divide & Conquer 11 & 12 Film Literature Elective Session 1 of 10 Double-Blocked Periods over 2 Weeks - PBL Methodology Eric Nentrup Through ePals.com, the class will connect with a class from another country, and together, produce a short lm with international production values. The two classes will work over the course of 2 weeks to develop, write, shoot, and edit a short concept with performances and scenes from both countries. Such initiatives not only connect students for the sheer novelty and jovial value of having distant connections to foreign lands, but also prepare them for the possibility of working with international co-workers in the not too distant future: ...the "wiring of the world" and the digitization of production since 1998 are making it possible for people to do increasing amounts of work anywhere and anytime. (Stewart quoting Friedman, 2010) The methodology for conquering the geographic and cultural divide will be starting with print text via email, but towards the common goal of a NON-print text of producing a short lm. The ability to share motion images is reportedly a way to expedite learning about multicultural differences: Digitally literate people not only represent an idea by selecting modes and tools but also plan how to spatially and temporally juxtapose multimodal texts to best represent ideas. Work with the teacher to plan out the project well in advance, thinking through all the hurdles of SCHEDULE DIFFERENCES, cultural considerations, and of course, technological issues. Additionally, any academic standards and learning targets will need to be mutually agreed upon, if beyond the scope of those provided in this sample lesson. This step is crucial and will differ from one combination of classrooms to the next. Realize beforehand that the emphasis on this project is on the international collaboration more so than the nished lm, though there may be some surprises. Create Teacher Intros where you and your international team teacher speak directly to each others classes. Pre-sort students from each class into groups of 3. When paired, the combo lm crews will be 6 members a piece. Once all prerequisite pieces are in place, proceed with the lesson rollout.
