Monster Vac: Dont Let Our Competitors Leave You In The Dust

Executive Summary EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The following report was based on a secret shopper test conducted between 4-2-03 and 4-7-03. Innovative Marketing & Management Group (IMMG), a Denver-based consulting firm, was chosen to test just how good Monster Vac is vs. our competitors. The test revealed 10 Critical Characteristics you should demand from your duct cleaning company. Critical Characteristic #1: NADCA Certification

A company can be considered NADCA Certified if a single individual in the company is certified. Certification of the individual means that they passed a test demonstrating knowledge of NADCA Standards. In other words, they know how to get a system clean without contaminating the rest of the home and making conditions worse than when they started. At Monster Vac, we recommend you demand to see the NADCA Certification Card of anyone you pay to clean your system. Its the only way to ensure they personally have thorough knowledge of what it takes to get your system clean without contaminating the rest of the home and making conditions worse than when they started. Critical Characteristic #2: Cleaning To NADCA Standard A company does not have to follow or clean to NADCA Standards in order to maintain NADCA Certification. Get it? They dont have to follow the processes they demonstrated knowledge about in order to remain certified. They can cut corners, skip steps all together, CONTAMINATE YOUR HOME, and still maintain certification. Make sure your HVAC System cleaning company follows all of the cleaning standards recommended by NADCA, including: 1). Using equipment that generates sufficient suction; 2). Demonstrating required pressure differential; 3). Clean, sanitized equipment; 4). Sufficient capture velocity; 5). Clean the entire system; 6). Cleaning the AC evaporator coil; 7). Cleaning the entire length of all supply/return branches and trunk lines. Critical Characteristic #3: EPA Certified Technicians Your duct cleaning company Tech should be EPA certified and licensed to handle and recover refrigerants in case of a mishap. Federal law requires that refrigerants be recovered according to EPA regulations, and that they be serviced only by an EPA licensed technician (according to the 1992 Clean Air Act). All Monster Vac Techs are EPA certified and licensed to handle and recover refrigerants according to EPA regulations. Demand to see proofits the only way to protect yourself!! Ask our competitors what they would do if a leak occurs? Do they know how to pump-down an AC Unit? If they say they would call in another company to deal with the problemits too late. If a leak occurs, all of the refrigerant will leak out of the system in as little as 1 hour!! Demand they have the certification and knowledge to act immediatelyand protect you and your family!! Monster Vac: Dont Let Our Competitors Leave You In The Dust 3

Executive Summary Critical Characteristic #4: Disassemble Plenum, Remove Coil In order to clean the evaporator coil, the plenum, or sheet metal body of the furnace must be disassembled in order to expose and/or remove the coil. HVAC Technicians MUST be trained and licensed to properly address the evaporator coil and perform a pump-down test in the event of a leak in order to perform this operation. Our competitors were not EPA Certified, and therefore, acted properly by skipping this critical cleaning step. Their service cannot clean the entire system, and the test home was left not CLEAN, but LESS FILTHY. Critical Characteristic #5: Coil Cleaning Method NADCA Standard 6.3: Coil Surface Cleaning All portions of the coil assembly must be cleaned. Both upstream and downstream sides of each coil shall be accessed for cleaning. Where limited access is provided between the heating and cooling coils in an air handling unit, thorough cleaning may require coil removal and/or replacement. SO HERE IS OUR QUESTION: If NADCA Certified air duct cleaning companies must know this standard in order to pass the certification test, why are they choosing to not clean to NADCA Standards? Why are they choosing to charge you to clean your system and leave a vital component filthy? DEMAND that your AC Evaporator Coil be cleaned as part of your HVAC System cleaning service!! Remember that NADCA Standard 6.3: Coil Surface Cleaning also states the following: Coils with microbial contamination shall be wet process cleaned. The only way to determine whether or not coils contain microbial contamination (mold, mildew, etc) is to obtain a sample and grow a culture. Obviously, this is impractical to do when cleaning your system. Therefore, the proper way to address coil cleaning is to ASSUME THAT THEY CONTAIN MICROBIAL CONTAMINATION AND CLEAN THEM USING A PRESSURIZED WET CLEANING PROCESS EVERY TIME!!! Monster Vac was the only company to clean the coil. Monster Vacs 8-Step Evaporator Coil Pressurized Wet Cleaning Process is designed to meet NADCA standards and leave your AC evaporator coil system free from microbial contamination!! Critical Characteristic #6: Cleaning The Air Handling Unit (AHU) Cleaning The Air Handling Unit (AHU). Were the A). Motor / blower removed and/or cleaned? B). Burners / heat exchanger removed and/or cleaned? C. Was the furnace compartment cleaned (inside and outside)? Monster Vac was the only company to remove and thoroughly clean the motor and blower. The other 3 competitors mysteriously choose to ignore the filth that was waiting for them should they have looked. DEMAND that the furnace components be removed for cleaning. Ohand ask for visual proof (video or photos) before you pay the technician to make sure the job was done right!! Monster Vac: Dont Let Our Competitors Leave You In The Dust 4

Executive Summary Critical Characteristic #7: Sufficient Capture Velocity WHY SHOULD THIS BE IMPORTANT TO YOU? 1). Without sufficient suction power (capture velocity), a HVAC system cleaning company cant get your system clean; 2). Without sufficient suction power (capture velocity), there is a huge risk of crosscontamination. This means that there must be enough negative pressure so that when agitated and dislodged, contamination wont escape from the part of the system being cleaned into other parts of the system or your home. Monster Vac was the only company tested to meet even the lowest suction requirements recommended by NADCA. In addition, they were the only company who could meet the maximum NADCA capture velocity recommendations. Remember, the capture velocity is measured IN THE PORTION OF THE DUCT SYSTEM BEING CLEANEDnot at the nozzle of the suction equipment. The total suction is greatly reduced when distributed throughout the entire duct. There is no possible way for the competitors to meet minimum NADCA suction requirements. NO WAY!! Here is a question for our competitors: If you passed the NADCA Certification test, and know what capture velocities are required to get a system CLEAN, why doesnt your equipment meet even minimum NADCA Standards? How can you protect your customers against crosscontamination with the underpowered equipment you use? How?!?! Critical Characteristic #8: Cleaning Method Experienced HVAC System cleaning companies know that 1 fact is true: It is unrealistic to expect that 1 tool or 1 methodology will work for all environments they encounter. Therefore: a quality HVAC cleaning company will have all tools and all methodologies available to them (including direct contact methods, central collection or negative air methods, hand agitation, mechanical agitation, compressed air, and clean / sanitized equipment) so they can get your system CLEANnot just LESS FILTHY!! Critical Characteristic #9: Explanation of Written Pledge Sheet (Service Guarantee) The quality of any company can be measured by how they guarantee their product or service. A written pledge sheet or guarantee should be: 1. 2. 3. 4. Explicit- It should state exactly under what circumstances the guarantee will be honored. It should state exactly what is covered and what is not covered. Clear- It should state exactly what will be done to honor the guarantee. Timely- It should state how long the guarantee is in effect for, and a time frame for taking corrective action. Formal- It should be written and formalized.

Monster Vac: Dont Let Our Competitors Leave You In The Dust

Executive Summary Critical Characteristic #10: Visual Proof The System Is Clean Your cleaning company should offer visual proof the system is cleanusing visual, video or photo proof before you write them the check. Some companies offer to show you how much debris came out of the system. Some companies send you a photo in the mail of one part of the system thats easy to get to. Dont be fooled. The photo could be of someone elses system, and your system could still be dirty. DEMAND that you be shown visual proof for at least 14 critical areas that usually dont get cleaned: 2 Supply Branches- Full Length 2 Return Branches- Full Length Supply Trunk Line- Full Length Return Trunk Line- Full Length Motor/Blower Assembly Blower Compartment AC Evaporator Coils- Top AC Evaporator Coils- Bottom Heat Exchanger- Top Heat Exchanger- Bottom Condensate Drain Pan Burner Compartment

Without definitive proof that these areas are CLEAN, you could be left with a system that is just LESS FILTHY!!

Clean vs. Less FilthyThe Choice Is Yours

Clean vs. Less FilthyThe Choice Is Yours

To All Metro-Area Residents Thats right. You do have a choice. You can pay one of our competitors anywhere from $200 - $450 to get your furnace and duct system LESS FILTHY, or you can pay Monster Vac to get your system CLEAN!! How do we know? We had ourselvesand our competitorstested. Between 4-2-03 and 4-7-03, we hired a consulting firm to put furnace/duct system cleaning companies to the test. Heres what they did.

It was a dirty job, but someone had to do it!!

Innovative Marketing & Management Group, a Denver-based consulting firm, was chosen to test just how good Monster Vac is vs. our competitors. They selected a 1970s, 3-level townhome with a finished basement for the test. The duct system contained 15 supply branches/vents and 3 cold-air returns. (Actually, the home had 16 supply branches/vents. A hidden kitchen-area vent was discovered by Monster Vac during their cleaning, as well as 1 cold air return that was not connected to the rest of the system by the builder). IMMG spent dozens of hours talking with our competitorsand ourselveseducating themselves on how each company cleaned furnace/duct systems. Having acquired a thorough knowledge of what should be done to clean a furnace/duct systemand what some of the potential pitfalls and shortcuts are that can signal an incomplete jobthey developed a test checklist to measure how well each company did. They tested 3 duct cleaning companies and Monster Vac. Test Scores were recorded as Pass / Fail for each item. Oh- and they took pictures (see our website at www.monstervac.com for VISUAL PROOF). When the results of the test came in, we were astounded. We couldnt believe that residents are paying so much money for furnace/duct cleaning services that leave their systems filthyand crosscontaminated with other peoples filth!! We had always known that our technology/equipment, cleaning processes, and high-caliber technicians were better than the competition, but we had no idea how much better. And we didnt have proof. All that has changed. We are proud to offer you the following report. It contains all the information we think you need to make an intelligent decision regarding who should clean your home furnace/duct systemincluding proof of how filthy the competition will leave your home if you choose to have them clean your system. Even if you do choose a competitor, PLEASE utilize the checklist as a guide to help you determine whether or not they followed all of the steps that are required in order for your system to be truly clean, and NOT CROSS-CONTAMINATED. After all, its your moneyand its your health. Sincerely, Bill Lundquist-President Monster Vac, Inc.

10 Critical Characteristics You Should Demand From Your Duct Cleaning Company.
(After All, They Really Do Make The Difference In Whether Your System Is Left Clean--or Less Filthy)
The following report was based on a secret shopper test conducted between 4-2-03 and 4-7-03. Innovative Marketing & Management Group (IMMG), a Denver-based consulting firm, was chosen to test just how good Monster Vac is vs. our competitors. The home they selected was a 1970s, 3-level townhome with a finished basement. The duct system, never before cleaned, contained 15 supply branches/vents and 3 cold-air returns. The furnace unit contained all furnace components (blower, motor, burners, heat exchanger) and air conditioning evaporator coils. Four furnace/duct system cleaning companies were tested: Competitor 1: Littleton-based, low-cost provider (Job Quote / Cost: $300.00 / $270.00) Competitor 2: National franchise carpet cleaning company (Job Quote / Cost: $430.00 / $380.00) Competitor 3: Denver-based firm (our stiffest competition) (Job Quote / Cost: $421.00 / $397.00) Monster Vac: Denver-based, premium service provider (Job Quote / Cost: $515.00* / $515.00*)
*Note: These prices are based on December, 2002 service and costs for the test home. Your cost may vary.

Each cleaning company was rated Pass / Fail on how well they complied with a 43-point checklist developed by IMMG. IMMG spent dozens of hours talking with our competitorsand ourselves educating themselves on how each company cleaned furnace/duct systems. Having acquired a thorough knowledge of what should be done to clean a furnace/duct systemand what some of the potential pitfalls and shortcuts are that can signal an incomplete jobthey developed the test checklist to measure how well each company did. The checklist rated all aspects of the job, from customer service to cleanup. (Special care was taken to ensure the Monster Vac technicians did not know this was a test. The job order listed third-party billing, so no fee was collected at the end of the cleaning.) The test result Pass / Fail percentages are presented for all 43 items. Although each of the 43 items on the checklist represent a critical characteristic that really does make the difference in whether your system is left CLEAN--or LESS FILTHY AND CROSS-CONTAMINATEDand whether or not you receive superior customer service, we have chosen to highlight 10 of the most critical for this report. Digital pictures (before and after) are presented as proof of how each companys technology/equipment, cleaning processes, and technicians performed on these 10 critical items. These photos can be found on our website at www.monstervac.com. All parts of the system were re-contaminated for each cleaning company. Dirt was placed back into the system before each test, and before photos taken with a digital camera. If fact, more dirt was placed back into the system for Monster Vac than for any of their competitors. After photos were then taken when each company completed the cleaning. Critical Characteristic #1: NADCA Certification Critical Characteristic #1: NADCA Certification The National Air Duct Cleaners Associations (NADCA) mission is to lead the domestic and international HVAC hygiene industry in standard setting, research, information dissemination and the promotion of ethical practices. In order to ensure the continuing education of the HVAC hygiene industry, NADCA generates standards that are recognized industry-wide. In addition, NADCA's certification program and system of continuing education for HVAC hygiene professionals is increasingly receiving recognition nationwide. A couple of important points about NADCA Certification: 1. A company can be considered NADCA Certified if a single individual in the company is certified. Certification of the individual means that they passed a test demonstrating knowledge of NADCA Standards. In other words, they know how to get a system clean without contaminating the rest of the home and making conditions worse than when they started. 2. Ohand by the waythe test is not a lay-down. Only 60% of all individuals who take it pass the test. Are these important points? You bet. The table below illustrates why.

Competitor #1 Was The Company Certified? Was the Tech Certified? Yes Yes No No Competitor #2 Yes Yes No No Competitor #3 Yes Yes No No Monster Vac Yes Yes No No

Competitor #1 was certified, but the Tech was NOT!! Competitor #2 wasnt certified at all. At Monster Vac, all of our jobs are performed by a NADCA Certified Technician. In fact, we require they carry their NADCA Certification Card with them. WE RECOMMEND YOU DEMAND TO SEE THE NADCA CERTIFICATION CARD OF ANYONE YOU PAY TO CLEAN YOUR SYSTEM. ITS THE ONLY WAY TO ENSURE THEY HAVE THOROUGH KNOWLEDGE OF WHAT IT TAKES TO GET YOUR SYSTEM CLEAN WITHOUT CONTAMINATING THE REST OF THE HOME AND MAKING CONDITIONS WORSE THAN WHEN THEY STARTED.

Critical Characteristic #2: Cleaning to NADCA Standard Critical Characteristic #2: Cleaning to NADCA Standard A company does not have to follow or clean to NADCA Standards in order to maintain NADCA Certification. Get it? They dont have to follow the processes they demonstrated knowledge about in order to remain certified. They can cut corners, skip steps all together, CONTAMINATE YOUR HOME, and still maintain certification. While they may be certified, whether or not they actually follow and clean to NADCA Standards is a different matter!! Just what are the most critical NADCA Standards you should be concerned with? Which cleaning standards make the difference between CLEAN and LESS FILTHY WITHOUT CROSSCONTAMINATING THE REST OF THE HOME AND MAKING CONDITIONS WORSE THAN WHEN THEY STARTED? NADCA Standards 5.1, 5.1.2: HVAC Duct Pressurization, Pressure Differential Requirements HVAC ducts shall be kept at an appropriate pressure differential relative to surrounding indoor occupant spaces during all cleaning procedures and as may be required during assessment activities. The pressure differentials may be achieved through the use of a negative air machine or vacuum collection equipment. Pressurization differential requirements apply to projects taking place within all building use classifications. It must be possible to demonstrate pressurization differential. An appropriate pressure differential shall be maintained between the portion of the HVAC ductwork system being cleaned and surrounding indoor occupant spaces. The pressure differential on those potions of the HVAC system undergoing cleaning should be verified at representative locations during the cleaning process. In other words, enough suction must be created in the system to prevent contaminants in the portion of the duct being cleaned from spreading to other parts of the system and/or the living spaces in the home. THIS IS CALLED CROSS-CONTAMINATION. Monster Vac has the most powerful, truck-mounted equipment in the businesspowerful enough to create the suction required to prevent cross-contamination. When it comes to suctionMORE IS BETTER!! Furthermore, the pressure differential must be demonstrated. It must be possible to show that the air pressure in the duct is lower than the air pressure in the surrounding areaTHUS PREVENTING CROSS-CONTAMINATION. This standard is discussed further in Critical Characteristic #7. NADCA Standard 5.3: Cleaning Equipment Tools, equipment, and instrumentation brought onto the work site shall be clean and must not introduce contaminants into the indoor environment or HVAC system. All equipment shall be in safe working order upon arrival at the job site. All equipment shall be serviced as needed throughout the project to limit possible cross-contamination from poor hygiene, or unsafe operating conditions for service personnel and building occupants. These requirements shall apply to all cleaning projects.

Monster Vac: Dont Let Our Competitors Leave You In The Dust

20

Critical Characteristic #2: Cleaning to NADCA Standard This standard also addresses cross-contamination. Its pretty simpleall cleaning equipment should be free of someone elses dirt and germs before your house or business is cleaned. Monster Vac cleans their equipment before every job. This standard is discussed further in Critical Characteristic #8. NADCA Standard 6.1.1: Vacuum Collection Devices- Capture Velocity The collection device must be of sufficient power that containment of debris and the protection of the indoor environment are maintained. This standard and its relationship to Cross-Contamination is discussed further in Critical Characteristic #7. Monster Vac has the most powerful, truck-mounted equipment in the business powerful enough to create the suction required to prevent cross-contamination. When it comes to suctionMORE IS BETTER!! NADCA Standard 6.0: HVAC System Cleaning This section defines the minimum requirements necessary to render the HVAC system and its components clean through the removal of significant surface contaminants and deposits. The HVAC system includes any interior surface of the facilitys air distribution system for conditioned spaces and/or occupied zones. This includes the entire heating, air-conditioning and ventilation system from the points where air enters the system to the points where air is discharged from the system. The air returen grills, return air ducts to the air handling unit (AHU), the interior surfaces of the AHU, mixing box, coil compartment, condensate drain pans, humidifiers and dehumidifiers, supply air ducts, fans, fan housing, fan blades, air wash systems, spray eliminators, turning vanes, filters, filter housings, reheat coils, and supply diffusers are all considered part of the HVAC system. The HVAC system may also include other components such as dedicated exhaust and ventilation components and make-up air systems. In other words, everything from where air enters the system to where it exits the system is included and should be cleaned. Monster Vac CLEANS IT ALL!! This standard is discussed further in Critical Characteristics #8-10. NADCA Standard 6.3: Coil Surface Cleaning All portions of the coil assembly must be cleaned. Both upstream and downstream sides of each coil shall be accessed for cleaning. Where limited access is provided between the heating and cooling coils in an air handling unit, thorough cleaning may require coil removal and/or replacement. Coil surfaces shall be thoroughly cleaned using methods that will render the coil visibly clean. Cleaning methods shall not cause any appreciable damage to, displacement of, inhibit heat transfer, or erosion of the coil surface or fins, and shall conform to coil manufacturer recommendations when available. All chemical cleaner residue shall be thoroughly rinsed from the coil and other HVAC surfaces.

Monster Vac: Dont Let Our Competitors Leave You In The Dust

21

Critical Characteristic #2: Cleaning to NADCA Standard Coils with microbial contamination shall be WET PROCESS CLEANED. The condensate drain pan and drain line shall be cleaned and flushed. The condensate drain pan shall be inspected to verify proper operation before and after cleaning. Monster Vac is the only HVAC System cleaning company to utilize an 8-step, pressurized wet cleaning process. This standard is discussed further in Critical Characteristics #3-5. NADCA Standard 6.2.2: Duct Systems Duct systems must be cleaned to remove all visible contaminants and shall be capable of passing cleanliness verification requirements. Inaccessible areas shall be accessed by service openings constructed in the system that are large enough to accommodate mechanical cleaning procedures In other words, they must be visibly clean. Monster Vac provides you with visual proof your system is clean in 14 critical areasBEFORE YOU PAY US AND BEFORE WE LEAVE. This standard is discussed further in Critical Characteristic #8-10. Sohow did everyone do? Consider the following table:

Test Results
Competitor #1 Did The Company Adhere To NADCA Cleaning Standards? Yes No Competitor #2 Yes No Competitor #3 Yes No Monster Vac Yes No

Only Monster Vac followed all of the cleaning standards recommended by NADCA, including: 1). Using equipment that generates sufficient suction; 2). Demonstrating required pressure differential; 3). Clean, sanitized equipment; 4). Sufficient capture velocity; 5). Clean the entire system; 6). Cleaning the AC evaporator coil; 7). Cleaning the entire length of all supply/return branches and trunk lines. 22

Critical Characteristic #2: Cleaning to NADCA Standard CLEANING- THE FURNACE UNIT AND EVAPORATOR COIL Cleaning the furnace unit and evaporator coil is perhaps the most important step in the HVAC cleaning process. Remarkably, it is the step that receives the least attention from most air duct cleaning companies. Most companies simply wipe the outside of the cabinet and call that good!! Theres more to it than that!! The typical furnace has a motor, blower, burners, and heat exchanger. The only way to thoroughly clean the furnace unit is to remove the furnace motor and blower, and use high-pressure air to scrub it, the heat exchanger, burners, and the furnace cabinet. By far, the most important step required to get a HVAC system truly CLEAN is to thoroughly clean the evaporator coil. If you have air conditioning, you will have an evaporator coil in the air stream. This coil is usually located above the furnace. When the air conditioning system runs, the coil gets cold. The cold coil causes moisture in the air to condense when it travels across the coil. The system is designed so that the moisture runs down the coil into a drain pan and out through a drain line.

24

Critical Characteristic #2: Cleaning to NADCA Standard All homes have a certain amount of dust in the air. Not all of the dust is captured by the filter. When this dust hits the wet coil, it becomes trapped. Over time, a thick layer of dust can build up on the coil and cause several problems: 1. Clogged A/C Coils Restrict Air Flow- As the coil becomes clogged, the amount of air (cold and hotremember, heated air must pass through the evaporator coil even though the air conditioner is not operating) that will blow into the rooms in your home is reduced. The following air flow study was conducted by Monster Vac on new homes. IN HOMES THAT HAVE BEEN OCCUPIED FOR 5 OR MORE YEARS, THIS INCREASE IN AIR FLOW CAN EASILY REACH 200-300%!! 2. Dirty A/C Coils Reduce Heater and AC Efficiency- Restricted air flow causes your heater and AC to run longer while at the same time not heating or cooling your home as well as they were designed to. 3. Filthy A/C Coils Promote Biological Growth Contamination- Caked-on dirt in the evaporator coil, along with moisture, is an ideal environment for MOLD.

Critical Characteristic #2: Cleaning to NADCA Standard FACT: 1 out of 6 people who suffer from allergies do so because of the direct relationship to the mold, fungi, and bacteria IN THE AIR DUCT SYSTEM. (Total Health and Better Health Magazines) Mold Spores In Your HVAC System: Mold spores are microscopic and are naturally present in both indoor and outdoor air. Molds reproduce by means of spores. Some molds have spores that are easily disturbed and waft into the air and settle repeatedly with each disturbance. Other molds have sticky spores that will cling to surfaces and are dislodged by brushing against them or by other direct contact. Spores may remain able to grow for years after they are produced. In addition, whether or not the spores are alive, the allergens in and on them may remain allergenic for years. And These Mold Spores Are Probably In Your HVAC System RIGHT NOW!! Mold Toxins In Your HVAC System: Molds can produce toxic substances called mycotoxins. Some Mycotoxins cling to the surface of mold spores: others may be found within spores. More than 200 mycotoxins have been identified from common molds, and many more remain unidentified. Some of the molds that are known to produce mycotoxins are commonly found in moisture-damaged buildings. Exposure pathways for mycotoxins can include inhalation, ingestion or skin contact. Some mycotoxins are well known to affect humans and have been shown to be responsible for human health effects. Your family is probably being exposed to mold toxins from your HVAC system RIGHT NOW!! The Dangers Of Breathing Mold Or Mold Toxins From Your HVAC System Are Real!! Asthma: Molds just like the kind that are found in HVAC Systems can trigger asthma attacks in persons who are allergic (sensitized) to molds. The irritants produced by molds may also worsen asthma in non-allergic (non-sensitized) people. Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis: Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis may develop following either short-term (acute) or long-term (chronic) exposure to molds. The disease resembles bacterial pneumonia and is uncommon. Irritant Effects: Exposure to mold like the types commonly found in HVAC Systems can cause irritation of the eyes, skin, nose, throat and lungs and sometimes can create a burning sensation in these areas. Opportunistic Infections: People with weakened immune systems may be more vulnerable to infection by molds. Aspergillus Fumigatus, for example, has been known to infect the lungs of immune-compromised individuals. These individuals inhale the mold spores that start growing in their lungs. Trichoderma has also been known to infect immune-compromised children. Healthy individuals are usually not vulnerable to opportunistic infections from airborne mold exposure. However, molds can cause common skin infections such as Athlete's Foot and Yeast infections.

Critical Characteristic #2: Cleaning to NADCA Standard As you can see, cleaning the AC Evaporator Coil and Furnace Unit are critical steps required to get your system CLEAN. Cutting corners or skipping steps in these areas will definitely leave your system FILTHY AND CROSS-CONTAMINATED. Even if the air duct cleaning company does a good of cleaning your air ducts, it is meaningless if a dirty, contaminated furnace unit and evaporator coil are left to blow dirt and biological contaminants throughout your system when it is turned back on.

Critical Characteristic #3: EPA Certified Technicians Critical Characteristic #3: EPA Certified Tech? To clean an evaporator coil, the Tech must be properly trained and possess the skill to disassemble the plenum (sheet metal body) of the furnace. This can be a delicate operation because the AC lines are often old and/or fragile. If not properly done, and sometimes even if youre careful, the evaporator coil lines can become damagedand result in a hazardous refrigerant leak into your home (e.g., Freon). Your duct cleaning company Tech should be EPA certified and licensed to handle and recover refrigerants in case of a mishap.

The results from this critical characteristic speak for themselves. Actually, the competitors acted properly: They were not trained or licensed to properly address the evaporator coil and perform a pump-down test in the event of a leak, and therefore skipped this critical cleaning step. Their service cannot clean the entire system, and the test home was left not CLEAN, but LESS FILTHY.

Critical Characteristic #5: Coil Cleaning Method

Cleaning the coil requires multiple steps, including compressed air and washing. Ohby the waythe companies that are NADCA Certified know that the evaporator coil must be cleaned in order for the system to be considered clean. In fact, they must know the following in order to pass the certification test: NADCA Standard 6.3: Coil Surface Cleaning All portions of the coil assembly must be cleaned.

Critical Characteristic #5: Coil Cleaning Method Monster Vacs 8-Step Evaporator Coil Pressurized Wet Cleaning Process 1. Locate coil and create maximum coil exposure. 2. Apply suction power from Monster Vac and air wash coil to remove large matting, dust and debris. 3. Clean and inspect condensate drain pan. 4. Clean condensate drain line. 5. Check slope of coil for drainage. 6. Using a fin comb straighten bent fins on coil in order to insure cleaning process penetrates entire coil. 7. Pressure wash coil with proprietary coil pressure washer and specialized coil cleaning solution. 8. Apply sanitizer to coil and drain pan. The only way to clean a coil as effectively as our compressed air/pressurized wet cleaning methodology is to remove the coil and power wash it. This is usually the way a HVAC contractor will clean a coil, and requires the following steps (and a $450.00 to $800.00 billmore than Monster Vac charges to clean your ENTIRE SYSTEM!!): Hook gauges up to your system, and run a recovery machine that will draw out the refrigerant into an EPA approved tank. Cut the coil out of the furnace system. Soak the coil in chemicals, then power wash the coil. Install a new filter dryer in the refrigerant lines. Braze the evaporator coil back into the system. Leak check the coil. Run a vacuum pump for about an hour to remove all air and contaminants from the refrigerant lines. Charge the system with new refrigerant (e.g., Freon). Monitor and adjust the systemhoping all the while that the compressor can handle the system having been opened.

Critical Characteristic #7: Sufficient Capture Velocity Critical Characteristic #7: Sufficient Capture Velocity According to NADCA Standards, supply capture velocities (closely related to suction power) of cleaning equipmentin feet per minute (fpm)should be as follows: From ACR 2002: Section 6.1.1.1- Capture Velocity (as it relates to Cross-Contamination) When the vacuum collection device is used to convey and capture contaminants, it must maintain a sufficient velocity IN THE PORTION BEING CLEANED, as defined by ACGIH Industrial Ventilation: A Manual Of Recommended Practice, to keep loosened particles entrained and prevent settling while it is conveyed to the collection device. Table 2 below defines velocities necessary for various types of materials. Table 2 Velocity Requirements For Contaminant Removal

Reprinted from: ACR 2002: Assessment, Cleaning, & Restoration of HVAC Systems- An Industry Standard Developed By The National Air Duct Cleaners Association WHY SHOULD THIS BE IMPORTANT TO YOU?

Competitor #1 1500 cfm How much suction does your equipment have? (At least thats what Im told) Competitor #2 700-1400 cfm (You probably got 700 cfm) Competitor #3 Didnt Know (Based on feel, was about like Competitor #1) Monster Vac 21,000 cfm (I have to keep the truck at idle to keep it this low)

How?!?! DEMAND SUFFICIENT POWER TO PREVENT CROSS-CONTAMINATION AND TO GET YOUR SYSTEM CLEAN!!

Critical Characteristic #8: Cleaning Method

Monster Vac: Dont Let Our Competitors Leave You In The Dust

40

Critical Characteristic #8: Cleaning Method Critical Characteristic #8: Cleaning Method There are 2 primary cleaning methods approved by NADCA: 1). The Direct Contact Method; and 2). The Central Collection or Negative Air Method. Direct Contact Method: The Direct Contact Method resembles a shop vac. A vacuum hose is placed in the vent after agitation (or sometimes simultaneously) to suction debris out of the vent system. (Note: Even with Direct Contact Methods, NADCA Standard requires the system be under negative air pressure so contamination doesnt escape and cross-contaminate your home). Central Collection Or Negative Air Method: This method of debris removal requires attaching a large vacuum hose directly into the heart of the duct system. A powerful suction throughout the entire system is created using a negative air machine or from a truck-mounted unit. Both methods require that an agitation device be used to loosen the dirt that adheres to the duct system. These devices resemble bottle brushes that are forced into the full length of the duct. Hand Agitation: Hand agitation is sometimes necessary to remove really tough, stuck on debris. Hand agitation has limited utility, and is effective only in limited areas. Mechanical Agitation: Mechanical agitation is more desirable, and has greater usefulness over large areas. Brushes are spun at high speed using a power source (more desirable- usually air or electricity). Compressed Air: Compressed air is critical to getting fine dust out of small crevices and cracks, and for blowing debris out of the branch and trunk lines. Clean, Sanitized Equipment: As discussed earlier in this report clean, sanitized equipment is required to prevent cross-contamination. Experienced HVAC System cleaning companies know that 1 fact is true: IT IS UNREALISTIC TO EXPECT THAT 1 TOOL OR 1 METHODOLOGY WILL WORK FOR ALL ENVIRONMENTS THEY ENCOUNTER. THEREFORE: A QUALITY HVAC CLEANING COMPANY WILL HAVE ALL TOOLS AND ALL METHODOLOGIES AVAILABLE TO THEM SO THEY CAN GET YOUR SYSTEM CLEANNOT JUST LESS FILTHY!!
