In this era, there are so many courses that are used by the teachers to teach the students in education field. Even though most of them just focus on making the students become smarter and smarter, some of them add the moral education as the aim of the teaching and learning process. For example is literary course. Literature is commonly used in English Language Teaching (ELT) to develop the students knowledge. Actually, there are also many roles for the students that are built by literature in ELT class. But in this essay, we will discuss two of literary roles in ELT. First is to stimulate creativity and imagination of the students and second is to improve the general cultural awareness of the students. The first role of the literature is to stimulate the students creativity or imagination. Actually, there are so many meanings and perspectives that can be contained in literary texts. For example, when the story told about a kingdom, princess, queen, king, animal, and others, the students will imagine the setting and situation of that story. It will make the students create their imagination. And when the teacher asks them to make some pictures or roleplay from the story, it will stimulate the students creativity and also their imagination. The students will also imagine if they were the characters what they would do. It also stimulates the students creativity because they will give the responce of the story. According to Anggun Apriana in her blog (2011), It gives them the possibility to be another character in the story they read, to judge it from their perspective, to imagine the ending of it. Sometimes they identify themselves with the characters in the stories they read and the story can give them some clues to solve their problems and how to react in certain circumstances. (Anggun Apriana : 2011) The last but not the least is to improve the general cultural awareness of the students. By applying literature in English Learning Teaching, the students will be more aware to the culture because literature contains different cultural context from the whole world. This opinion is emphasized by Lazar (1993:11). He states that students are provided access to cultural background by using literature. They can see different cultural writes in the world. Actually, each era of literature has many kinds of themes which are influenced by different culture. For example, the literature in old era is different with the Elizabethan era. It is because the theme in works of old era is about war and journey, and then the theme in works of Elizabethan era is about religion and love.

To conclude, literature is important course to be taught to the students. Even though literature has a little scope, it actually has a great role in English Learning Teaching. It extremely helps students to stimulate the students creativity or imagination and then to improve the students general cultural awareness. It will be better if literature is provided much bigger scope in education field in order to create the students who are good not only in lesson but also in moral.
