Fall / Winter 2008

Connections In Nature

older months in the Gunpowder provide great opportunities for nature watchers! The abundance of spring and summer fades and the temperatures drop, forcing plants and animals to alter their behaviors in order to survive. Birds, mammals, and plants all rely on each other and all have specific roles to play in the survival of the forest community throughout the fall and winter. Brave the park in the colder months and you will be rewarded with some amazing glimpses of the natural world! One of the most interesting natural events at this time is the migration process. In late summer and early fall, many birds and butterflies migrate to warmer areas. They rely on the plants of our area to provide them with the sustenance required to make long flights, sometimes traveling thousands of miles. The forests and fields accommodate the needs of the birds as some plants produce late blooming fruits and seeds. Hike the trails of Gunpowder in early fall and look for dogwood, sassafras and spicebush, all

producing bright red berries. These trees are also among the first to go through leaf color changes, turning from green to bright orange, red or yellow. The early change helps advertise the food source to birds flying overhead. This system helps both the birds and the trees; birds get an important fall food source, and the tree species survival is enhanced by birds carrying their seeds to new areas to germinate and grow. Travelers on our trails at this time of year will also note that many trees begin producing fruit and nuts even as their leaves begin to fade. Gunpowders towering white and red oak trees begin to drop a great bounty of acorns, providing nourishment to deer and squirrels. Sit quietly near one of these trees and wait and see who might drop by for a snack look at the forest floor beneath your feet to see how many acorns have already been taken with only the cap left behind. Whitetail deer in particular love the large acorns of the white oak. If youre looking for whitetail, finding an area with plenty of mature oaks is a great start. Also, look around to see if you can spy any trees with the bark scraped off in a long, low, linear patch. A male deer causes this mark,

called a rub, by scraping its antlers on the tree. Male deer, called bucks, create rubs either to mark their territory or to scrape the soft velvet covering from their antlers in order to prepare for the upcoming competition of fall and early winter. If youre in the woods and you see an area with many rubs, a deer is likely nearby. As you enjoy nature-watching in Gunpowder this fall and winter, remember that you play a role in the environment too. Practice Leave No Trace principlesmake sure you pack out what you pack in. The animals rely on the natural world to provide them with what they need to survive the colder months. Visitors need to be careful to minimize their impact on that world when they visit the park. In addition to taking care not to harm nature during a visit to the park, nature lovers can also consider making some changes at home to help animals through the colder months. If you have garden beds around your home, leave the plants standing through the winterwait until spring to prune back old seed heads and tall grasses. The plants in your garden may be dry and brown but they can still provided shelter for animals and seeds for birds. continued on page 4...

The Civic Justice Corps: Reconnecting Youth with Nature

his past summer, groups of teenagers could be seen in various areas of Gunpowder Falls State Park all wearing khaki pants, work boots, and the Civic Justice Corps emblem. These teens were involved in service projects throughout the park; over the summer they learned about the relevance of nature, the importance of conservation, teamwork, job skills, and a little bit about themselves. With the support of Governor Martin OMalley as part of Marylands Partnership For Children In Nature, the Department of Natural Resources embarked upon a significant new initiative of the Maryland Conservation Corps (MCC) named the Civic Justice Corps (CJC). The CJC is a six-week employment program designed to provide conservation service opportunities for Baltimore City youth. The objective of this program is to build a connection between inner city youth and the natural resources the

Maryland Park Service strives to protect. The work of the CJC would not only aid in the conservation efforts of the park service, but we hoped to reach these teens on a level

that deepened their appreciation for the world beyond the concrete jungle of their neighborhoods. For some, the connection reached far beyond even these expectations, as I found from my personal experience working with two CJC crews. At the beginning of the program, I met two crews of nine girls I was scheduled to work with, crews 21 and 24. Both crews had a supervisor and a peer leader. The supervisors had been carefully screened to provide strong leadership, proper mentorship, and adequate nurturing. The peer leaders had been selected, based upon their application essays and interviews, as team members who would likely be looked up to and assist in maintaining morale. I soon learned the girls by their crew names, which were determined by the other girls on the crew and were usually descriptive of their hair styles or personality traits ...continued on page 4...

names like Squeaks for the quiet one, Hollywood for her diva sunglasses, and Flower Child for being inquisitive about the natural world. In no time they had given me my own crew name: Miss Firecracker! They showed me the contract flags they designed and signed on their first day together, dedicating themselves to the purpose of the program and their own personal goals. As we threw ourselves into our projects, I could not believe how deeply each girl reached within herself to go beyond her comfort level and perform the tasks at hand. Working in the woods without the creature comforts of home or basic technology they were familiar with was sometimes quite a stretch, but that was a vital lesson that each individual had to learn. In time, many of the girls embraced the conditions in which we worked.

The girls displayed tenacity and sheer physical strength that was both awesome and inspirational to me. They were curious about the natural and historical resources that were around us and listened intently when they were given interpretive lessons during the ample teachable moments. At the end of the six weeks we had completed significant and labor-intensive projects, and I had the pleasure of accompanying my girls on their camping trip to Western Maryland. By this time I had learned each girls real name after sharing challenges and triumphs that helped us grow close. I could not hold back my tears during the commencement ceremony when they gave me a framed photo of all of us on our first day working

together with a card they had all signed. I personally could not have asked for a more meaningful experience. All in all Gunpowder Falls State Park had ten Civic Justice Corps crews working on service projects including trail maintenance and renovation, carpentry projects, tree planting, critical area maintenance, water diversion and road repair, equipment use and safety, masonry, construction of a green promenade, and stream clean-ups. There were also recreational learning activities including a ropes course, canoeing, animal presentations, hiking, camping, and tubing. All of these projects and activities required dedicated park staff to provide technical support as well as additional mentoring and

supervision. Together with the careful planning of MCC coordinators, CJC staff and DNR cooperation, the CJC program changed perceptions, broke down barriers, created opportunities and taught valuable lessons for all involved. Along with a paycheck, it was clear that these teens earned some self-respect, trust in themselves and others, a deepened appreciation of nature, and a broadened understanding of their role in conservation.
