As a teenager, he sat in with the Jimmy Dorsey Band and Bill Black's Combo, and jammed with members of Woody Herman's New Thundering Herd. In addition to his blues and jazz credentials, Vest has also appeared with many country music legends, including Red Foley and Faron Young. He wrote the first songs ever recorded by Tammy Wynette.
