IISER-K 5 Year- INTEGRATED M.S. Program In the present day context of a developing India, an emphasis on Basic Science Education and Research is a primary goal for the nation. High quality scientific research is emerging as an attractive career option. To cater to the growing need for professionally qualified, high calibre science graduates, the HRD ministry has set up five IISERs in Kolkata , Pune, Mohali, Bhopal, and Tiruvananthapuram. Major/Minor structure: For the first two years the basic science courses Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology and Earth Science are taught. In addition, courses like Space and Astrophysical Sciences, Electronics and Computer lab, Communication skills, Indian Heritage in Science are also taught .All

courses are compulsory for all students. For the first year, the total number of course credits is 27 per semester. For the second year, the total number of course credits is 24 per semester. In the third year, students are required to decide on a Major subject Presently this choice is given for Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology and Earth sciences. In addition, two courses from other disciplines have to be chosen as a minor subject. Total Number of credits to be taken in 3rd year and later are 21 credits (9 Major +6 Minor) per semester. In fourth year, core, elective and interdisciplinary courses are taught along with seminars. In the fifth year, a student has to do a dissertation (research project) along with other advanced courses. Number and Hours of classes Classes start in the morning and continue until evening, with one hour of lunch break. Generally, theory classes are held in the morning and laboratory classes are held in the afternoon. Classes are typically an hour in duration, except labs, which are for three hours. A 3 credit course normally means three hours of class in a week. Duration of a semester is about 15-16 weeks, including examination. Attendance is compulsory: 80% attendance is mandatory for sitting in final examination Examination structure For theory classes, the assessment is based upon home works, class tests, mid-term examinations and a final examination. Some marks allotted based on for attendance. For Laboratory classes, there is continuous evaluation, on the performance of individual experiment, project work and a final examination. Grading Grading structure is as follows: A+: 90 and above, A: 80 and above, B+: 70 and above, B: 60 and above C: 50 and above, D: 40 and above, F below 40.

CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) and SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) are computed. A grade sheet is given to the students. Laboratories Laboratory work is done in groups (of 2 3 students). Manuals provided for the experiments to be done. References to various books also given. The students are assigned experiments beforehand. They required to come prepared. The instructor then helps the students in class. Laboratory notebooks are completed during class hours. are are are the

The Project is an innovative experiment that the student is required to do on his own. This is accompanied by an oral presentation and a report in the form of a paper. This is to encourage students in original thinking and to train them in giving seminars and paper writing. The final examination tests whether the student can do an experiment alone. Placement Assistance A placement cell is being planned to offer advice and assistance with placement for students following the completion of their course requirements. Our potential recruiters are academic institutions in India and abroad, national research laboratories and industries. Some details of Haringhata Campus and Hostel arrangements All classes are being held at Haringhata Campus. At Haringhata we have a lush green campus full of vegetation and native fauna, which creates an atmosphere conducive for living and studying. We have acquired three buildings from the West Bengal University of Animal and Fishery Sciences and have fully renovated them to house state of the art teaching and research facilities. We have also procured two hostels (one for boys and another for girls) and have fully renovated and furnished them for providing a hasslefree life to the students. Both the hostels are self sufficient in terms of kitchen and dining halls. Both the hostels have a common room with television and music system for the students. There is a small health center with a permanent nurse in the hostel where we have a doctor visit at regular

intervals. A mini-gym is located in the boys hostel. A movie-club is run by students and faculty which screens a weekly movie. The institute library houses books on fiction, in addition to academic books, for the reading pleasure of all. There are shops and restaurants just outside the campus. We encourage students to cycle in and outside the campus which is environmentally friendly and also a healthy option. However, do provide transportation from the Haringhata campus to Kolkata campus at Salt Lake for those desirous of travelling to the city. Inter-Semester Breaks The first semester lasts from early August to the first week of December and there is a winter break of four weeks. The second semester runs from early January till early May and there is a three month summer vacation for the students. However, students have the opportunity to work in a research lab or in a theoretical project for a month or so during the summer break, if they wish to gain some research experience. Extra Curricular and Sports Activities A healthy mind resides in a healthy body and all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy we take these adages seriously. At IISER Kolkata we believe in an all round education: all aspects of a students personality development have to be accounted for in order to make them an able citizen of the country, in addition to being a good scientist. A University is a centre of excellence which prepares the students for a self-sufficient and fulfilling life. In keeping with this spirit, we invest in developing both sports and extra-curricular activities for students. We organize a series of individual and team sport tournaments (table tennis, badminton, volleyball, cricket, football etc) throughout the year. We also encourage various clubs and societies like movie club, drama and theatrical society, music club, dance club, creative arts society, photography, video, amateur astronomy and nature clubs. Students are encouraged to be members of different clubs and societies where they can nurture their creativity and complement their academic activities. We welcome all the new entrants to the IISER family come join us in an inspiring journey through life and science.
