Essay Writing

The Introduction The Introduction paragraph is one of the most essential parts of a great essay. This paragraph must capture the readers attention and outline what you are arguing and how you are going to prove it. Basically it is a road map with a fancy cover! Components of the Intro vThe intro paragraph begins with an introduction section that attempts to capture the readers attention with interesting background information, colourful writing etc. vThis is immediately followed by the THESIS STATEMENT which clearly states the main argument of your essay. The next three sentences are the BODY PARAGRAPH THESIS STATEMENTS. These 3 sentences will clearly state the main arguments you are using to prove that the statement you made in your original thesis is correct. The final sentence of the paragraph is the conclusion which sums up or concludes the main argument of your essay as stated in your original thesis.

The Body Paragraphs There must be 4, my mistake, 3 body paragraphs in an argumentative essay that all follow the same format. The paragraph begins with the body paragraph thesis statement that you wrote in the introduction. The order that the bodies appear in the intro is the order in which they must appear in the essay. Following the thesis statement you must introduce your first of 2 pieces of evidence which take the form of quotations from the story. You introduce this evidence by providing the reader with background or context information that makes the quote make sense to the reader. Remember that they have not read your novel, play etc. and do not have the background information that you do. It is your job to provide it for them so your argument makes sense! Once you have introduced you quote you must give your quote. Make sure when you do this that you have provided all the info necessary to make it understandable to the reader, such as, who is the speaker and what are they speaking about. This info could be provided in the intro of the quote. After giving the quote you must explain or discuss why it is important.

This step is crucial because this is where you are able to provide your opinion about your argument in the context of discussing how your quote relates to or proves the main argument of your essay as stated in your MAIN THESIS STATEMENT. Make sure to connect your quote to the main thesis statement!!!!! You have just completed the process for the first piece of evidence in your body paragraph. The next step is to use a transition statement such as, secondly finally in addition to this etc., and begin the process anew for your second piece of evidence. Once this process is complete for the second proof write a conclusion sentence for the paragraph that sums up the argument made in this paragraph. The Conclusion The conclusion paragraph is very similar in format to the introduction but its goal is not to introduce the topic but to sum up or conclude your argument. This is done by restating your main thesis argument along with the body paragraph theses in separate sentences and finally concluding the essay with one statement that sums up your argument. Remember there is NO new evidence in the conclusion.
