Course content:
Poverty and social exclusion; in our society and the wider world. Power players? Multinational Corporations, the politics behind them, the context in which they operate and the wider issues and debates surrounding them. Effects of HIV Aids; particularly on the people of Africa and how the pandemic disproportionately affects women. International Trade; how does it work? What role does Ireland, the EU and World Trade Organisation play? What is the difference between Free Trade and Fair Trade? And what are the alternatives? Images, the media and global perspectives; exploring how the people and issues of the Global South are represented by the media and NGOs and how these images and messages influence public perceptions and attitudes towards global justice issues. Climate Change; what causes it? What can be done? What is our responsibility as Irish citizens? The Debt Crisis; how it has been recognised as a major obstacle to human development. Peace, security and conflict; with a focus on the arms trade, a major cause of conflict and human rights abuses. Refugees and displaced people; where do they come from? Why do refugees leave their home? Where do refugees go? How are refugees treated by host countries? Women and Mens role in the Developing world; why women have inferior access to resources such as land, education, credit and authority. And why both men and women are Getting involved; whats out there? Campaign and activism work, options in volunteering overseas or at home?
