NON-PLASTIC DRIVE A campaign to rid Dubai of its environmental pollution by cutting back on usage of plastic products

[23/11/2011] Dubai, UAE Students of the University have taken up on the initiative to rid Dubai of its environmental pollution by through doing away with heaps of plastic bags by the year 2013. The students have taken the motivation to maintain in a cleaner environment for the preservation of the ecological balance. Thus, they are following in the footsteps of Ministry of Environment and Water the students have organized a drive to clear away the plastic items throughout the city. The student bodies of the University along with the faculty and even the students families are on the forefront of this environmental campaign called the Non-plastic drive. The purpose of this drive is to help the government keep the city cleaner by substantially reducing the amount of plastic garbage. Although the government has already made plans to reduce the plastic products' production and is adhering to the environmental measures, the students have decided to further the cause by lending in a helping hand. What has motivated the student of the University to take up this cause for the societal welfare by reducing the environmental hazards posed by plastic products is to ensure a safer and healthier environment for all. As numerous researches have time and again proven that plastic products including plastic bags, bottles, caps, containers, and the like pose a risk to the environment by destroying the ecosystems equilibrium we all need to work towards environmental health. This is the driving force behind the Non-plastic drive, whereby students will be aiming to add on to the environment-friendly approach of the UAE government by playing up their parts and cleaning up plastic and harmful garbage from various parts of the city. This does not only show a social responsibility on the students part but their awareness regarding the environmental issues threatening the life on earth.

With the Non-plastic drive, the students of the University will also be creating a social awareness regarding the hazardous impact that plastic products have on our environment. Overall, this drive is designed to reduce the level of global warming, which is spurred on further by plastic products because of the reason that they are non-biodegradable. Therefore, adding up to the environmental pollution and ecological degradation. Every year with their production, plastic bags pose a higher level danger to the environment because of their manufacturing composition, which is highly toxic and takes a very long time to break down. These toxic materials then enter the food chain of terrestrial life by infiltrating the soil and, become a threat for all either by ingestion or choking to death. Additionally, the plastic bags waste precious energy resources. Thus, in order to stop these plastic products from environmentally hazarding earth, a major cleanup project on has started by the government of UAE. To which the students want to contribute by efforts on a communal level for removal of harmful trash from upsetting our ecology. As a part of this drive, for the betterment of environment the students will also be promoting the usage of sustainable products like paper bags, jute bags, and tote bags to derive both environmental and economic benefits, as they are ecologically healthy and do not pose any threats to the environment.
