ideas) Identifying People and Ideas: 1. Psychology- the scientific study of behavior and mental processes 2. Cognitive activities- private, unobservable mental processes such as sensation, perception, though, and problem solving 3. Social-learning theory- the theory that suggests that people have the ability to change their environments or to create new ones Understanding Main Ideas: 1. Section 1 (page 4-6) How do the concepts of theory and principle differ? A theory is a statement that attempts to explain why things are the way they are and happen the way they do. Principle is a rule or law, such as the principle that you will probably get better grades if you study more. 2. Section 2 (page 8-11) Describe what clinical and counseling psychologists do. Clinical psychologist help people with psychological problems, such as anxiety or depression, or severe psychological disorders, such as schizophrenia. They hep clients over comes issues that affect their daily lives. Counseling psychologist use interviews and tests to identify their clients problems. They typically treat people who have adjusted problems rather than serious psychological disorders. 3. Section 3 (page 12-17) What view held by the ancient Greek physician Hippocrates was ahead of its time? In Greece there was a belief that the gods punished people for wrongdoing by causing them confusion and madness. Hippocrates suggested that such problems are caused by abnormalities in the brain. The idea that biological factors can affect out thoughts, feelings, and behavior influenced thinking about psychology for more than 2,000 years. 4.
