Investment Strategies *Reaching challenging students -Pulling kids aside for 30 second conversations before and after class

where set clear goals for them for that period/give them ongoing feedback -Fact-based feedback, and observable actions as opposed to value judgments -Positive framing, dont forget to call -Ongoing 1:1 conversations with students where really get deep into their experiences, interests -Call out your weaknesses, admit quickly and change course when need to (e.g., when you know youre being impatient, apologize and call that out) Management Strategies -Lunch detention as a consequence for kids who have right before lunch; having students practice the behavior they couldnt get right during class Cultivating Intrinsic Motivation -Build in What You Love (aka Joshs raised eyebrow approach): Express enthusiasm in content, find what excites you about it and seek opportunities to show that/communicate that with your students -Do what You Love/Have fun: Figure out what excites you about teaching, and incorporate that into it: if you like it when kids are having fun, put in the extra work to make activities engaging/interesting or build in routines for j-factor (e.g., call and response activities, competition/games, etc.) if you love it when you can help kids understand difficult concepts, beef up on content knowledge/come up with /collaborate around creative ways to explain tricky concepts if kids being excited about content gets you excited, get excited yourself or find ways to get excited about it Building Team/Peer-to-Peer Relationships -Teach them to code switch with style of interpersonal interactions: -sometimes, students are privy to jone/joke around with each other when theyre comfortable with someone so theyre not meaning to be rude. Explicitly teach kids how you want to work on a team in a professional setting and why its important to have that skill set. -Present/hang up sign that provides sentence starters for group work, agree/disagree -Show students collaboration rubric or videos of students exhibiting excellent teamwork/collaboration Creating environment where OK to make mistakes -Praise effort over accuracy of responses -Dont call kids smart when get answer right, but rather positively praise the efforts they took to reach answer

Students lead Do Now typically students are selected who have the potential to be a behavior problem but benefit from this leadership opportunity. Her approach to the Do Now is so routinized that she didnt have to teach the student how to facilitate it. Coach kids in the moment for less complicated tasks, if you want them to lead something more complicated then prep them before/after class.
