Oral Communication

Video Self-Evaluation
Review the videotape of your speech. As you watch, answer the following questions. 1. How did you try to get the audiences attention? How effective was it?

I shared a family pastime with the audience and I asked them what they cannot do during fall. It made them laugh surprisingly, especially when I said kites are the best thing to do during fall and that there is nothing else better to do.
2. Did you clearly communicate your purpose (e.g. I am going to inform/convince you about/to)? How did you motivate your audience to listen to you? I clearly stated my topic. I motivated them by saying kites can make a use out of the windy weather. Also, it is fun to build a kite with someone, especially with you family and friends.

3.

How was your speech organized? How clearly/logically did it progress? Could I stop paying attention to you and read your outline instead and still follow along easily?

It was orgainzed by the intro, the body ( or the directions for how to make the kite and few alternatives), and the conclusion. Yes, the outline was very similar to the speech. I had to insert phrases because the audience were laughing and I felt as if I needed to add something to interact with them.
4. What were some of the transition words you used in your speech? Did you clearly indicate movement from one part of your speech to another? Why/why not?

Also, furthermore, now, after you have, after that, then, lastly. Yes, the speech is very straight forward. Intro to materials to directions to alternatives and to conclusion.

5.

Explain why your main points were/were not clearly presented.

Some of the audience were whisphering and rushing to see what is going on, the doors were opening and closing. i did not eat before the speech so that made me more vulnerable, especially when the audience is eating and when I just finished PE.
6. Evaluate your conclusion. Did it connect seamlessly with the introduction and body? Did you give a clear sense of ending?

Yes, making a kite with someone was mentioned in conclusion and introduction. The main point was because kites will make a use out of the windy weather during fall. I also asked them what they have learned and I told them my three points.

7.

Evaluate your delivery. Were you loud enough/clear enough/energetic enough/varying your tone enough/connecting to your whole audience enough?

I was very excited to present in the cafeteria, especially when there were less people and less teachers. The tone was great because I made sure that my voice went to the entire cafeteria. I looked not only at the people in front of me, but I looked at the people on the side and outside.

8.

How did your use of voice, gestures, and bodily action enhance (or detract) from the message of your speech? What will you do to enhance the message of your speaking opportunities?

The voice I used projected all around the speech alot and it helped to make Bodily actions such as holding up the enhanced the audience as well. I will audience interested.

Did you appear sincerely interested and enthusiastic in the topic (your classmate) and in your talking with your audience? What did your body language and eye contact say to your audience? Give examples to support your answers. Yes, I engaged to their feelings hoping they can feel interested about my topic too. I used lots of hand gestures and variations in my voice to attract the audiences' attention. I also gave stern looks at some people because they were making fun of me; but then I laughed too, because I knew that they were joking. Evaluate the overall success of this speech. What grade (A-F) would you assign this presentation? Why? An A-. Overall the speech was fantastic, but the preparation for the speech was quite rushed. Again, coming back from PE and not having lunch yet made me a little vulnerable. However, the presentation part was a success and I look forward to the next one! Describe what you have learned from this speaking opportunity, and how you will use this information in the future. Although you practiced enough, it won't kill to practice more and insert a little phrase here and there sometimes in the speech. Hopefully, these phrases will help grab more attention and help your speech to be humorous. I also noticed that the audience felt happy that I was demonstrating how to kite. The audience was initially interested, I had my topic to my advantage. What did you learn from this presentation that will help you prepare your future speech? List at least three things that you plan on working on. (To just practice is not a specific step exactly how will you practice?) a. Get to the speech place on time, make sure you are fully prepared and cooled down before the speech begins. It will ease the speech more.

b. Interact with the audience, make sure that they are interested in your topic too, help them to listen to your topic. Also, with you.

c. Make sure that the audience should be a little interested with your speech topic. It will help the speaker to consider what to say before they write what they want to say. Always know who the audience is. 13. Describe, in detail, the areas you will improve your public speaking and exactly how you will improve. Include a variety of specific steps you will take to improve your public speaking skills. I need to know who the audience is and some of their interests (if they are a group of a class learning about a subject). I also need to prepare to be at the speaking place on time and review what to say. Lastly, I need to add any phrases that will enhance the speech and make it more humorous if possible (depending on my topic).
