Literary Terms Puritan Plain Style is the style of writing of most literature from early America. The style features short words, direct statements, references to everyday objects, and third person POV. Conceit is an elaborate comparison between two very di erent subjects. In poetry and literature, an apostrophe is used to address an inanimate object. Oratory is a style of formal public speaking. It is often persuasive, and is emotionally appealing. An iambic couplet is a two-line stanza in which every other word is usually stressed. 10 words in each line. Anne Bradstreets style of poetry. Persuasion is writing that convinces the reader to think di erently. A sermon is a compelling speech, usually religious in nature and delivered from a pulpit. In Colonial America, sermons were the most popular form of literature. Aphoristic style is a style of writing consisting of rhythm, slight alliteration, and balance. Argument by Analogy is when a writer compares two similar situations implying that the outcome of one will resemble the outcome of the other. Charged words contain strong connotations likely to produce an emotional response from the reader or listener. Blank verse is poetry written in unrhymed iambic pentameter. It is the closest style of poetry to the spoken word. The mood is the overall tone or feeling evoked by a literary work. Diction refers to a writers choice and arrangement of words. It is usually either ornate or simple. Parallelism is the repetition of grammatical structure. In Classicism, reason is the dominating characteristic of nature.

In Romanticism, the emotions and the individual are most important. In a folk tale, the characters typify human behaviors. The tone is usually humorous, and the events of the tale belong more to legend than to history. The tale usually contains a serious message about human values. A third-person-omniscient speaker is all-knowing, and stands outside the action. The narrator relates the thoughts and feelings of all the characters. Direct characterization is when the writer simply states what a character is like. Indirect characterization is when the writer reveals personality traits through the characters thoughts, words, and actions, and through what other characters say about them. Single E ect is a type of writing in which every character, incident, and detail contribute to an overall impression. An allegory is the presentation of an abstract idea through more concrete means. The typical allegory is a narrative that has at least two levels of meaning. In Gothic style writing, the setting is bleak and remote. The plot involves weird or violent incidents. The characters are in either physical or psychological torment. A supernatural or otherworldly element is often present.
