This reading passage describes how rewarding employees can provide the motivation required for them to work

hard which then leads to greater motivation amongst the workforce and improved productivity. However, the speaker questions the validity of this approach by giving the following reasons:-

It is illustrated in the reading passage that rewarding employees can get them to work hard or improve productively; however, the speaker questioned this idea for several reasons which are rendered below.
Firstly, the speaker points out that the practice of rewarding employees in this way can prove unfair to all the employees involved. The speaker went on to suggest that those employees who do in fact work hard are likely to feel that they are being controlled and manipulated which then leaves them feeling disrespected. On the other hand, those who do not work hard at all feel little incentive to improve themselves due to their poor expectations.

Firstly, the rewarding system is a punishment for all workers, including people who are awarded and those who are not. Because it not only makes the former ones feel disrespectful as they may perceive this as being controlled, but also let the latter ones be in an awful mood due to their self expectation. All employees are tortured by the system.
Secondly, this sort of approach (Subject.) is counter productive leading to a poorer quality product and reduced output level. Any employee who is not rewarded by his supervisor will have little or no incentive to work harder and maintain the high standards of quality that might otherwise be expected. The speaker went on to suggest that far standards improving that may very well get worse under this reward scheme.

Last but not least, the production (Subject.) might even be reduced by the amount and quality of work. For the employees' relationship with the supervisor, person who withholds reward could be damaged by concealing problems. Performances tend to be reduced rather than improved with this rewarding system.
