MOUNT PLEASANT The
Gaylord girls basketball team
suffered another loss to a
quality opponent on the road
Friday, dropping a 46-37
decision to Mount Pleasant,
but the Blue Devils showed
improvement.
Gaylord cut down consid-
erably on the turnovers
which hurt the cause in the
season-opening loss at the
court of defending Class C
state champion St. Ignace on
Tuesday, Nov. 29. The Blue
Devils also used their own
pressure to create turnovers.
Gaylords offense was up
and down, however, and that
proved costly in a game that
was low scoring.
The Blue Devils turned the
ball over just 12 times against
Mount Pleasant, getting solid
ball handling from the talent-
ed backcourt of underclass-
men Sarah Polena, Maddie
Hamilla and Mackenzie
Edwards.
That was the good news.
The bad news was that
Gaylord never hit a hot streak
with the ball, shooting less
than 30 percent from the
floor and less than 60 percent
from the charity stripe.
Junior sharpshooter
Edwards still managed to get
her points on a tough night.
The lethal lefty continued to
lead the way for the Blue
Devils at the offensive end,
making the twine dance to
the tune of 17 points. Mac
also knifed her way into the
lane to draw fouls and she
battled to pull down eight
rebounds.
Polena, a sparkplug at 5-
foot-2 with an engine that
doesnt quite, hit for six
points and also had seven
rebounds. Hamilla, a sopho-
more still getting accus-
tomed to the speed of the
varsity game, hit for six
points.
Katie Cummings tallied 11
to lead Mount Pleasant (2-0).
Gaylord prevailed in the JV
contest 49-36 as Joslyn Rider
racked up 14 points while
Lights Out Lindsey
Zaremba and Aubrey Curtis
each tallied nine.
The girls played hard
against a fast, physical team,
noted Gaylord JV coach
Shelly Curtis.
IN THE game at St. Ignace,
Mackenzie scored more than
half of Gaylords points,
assaulting the iron for 30
points in the 70-53 defeat.
Gaylord battled season-
opening jitters as well as a
very tough St. Ignace squad
and found itself too far
behind when the jitters final-
ly faded.
The Blue Devils were in a
25-point deficit midway
through the second quarter.
They did manage to play
evenly with the Saints the
rest of the way but the early
hole proved way too much to
overcome.
Gaylord, fueled by the hot
shooting of Edwards, did
trim the deficit to single dig-
its in the third quarter and
came to within six points in
the fourth quarter. St. Ignace
simply had too much fire-
power, though, and forced
several turnovers with
intense defensive pressure.
In addition to her 30
points, Mac also grabbed a
team-high five rebounds.
Polena notched six assists
from her point guard slot.
Gaylord coach Frank
Hamilla was happy with the
girls effort but thought his
team let St. Ignace do too
much of the leading in the
game.
We let them dictate what
we did offensively and defen-
sively and we cant do that,
said Hamilla, who is starting
his second season at the
helm of the Gaylord girls var-
sity program. They forced us
to play at their tempo and
forced our hand on offense.
We still managed to cut the
lead to six in the fourth quar-
ter but we didnt take it to the
hole enough and draw fouls
once we got close. We needed
more free throws.
Gaylord also lost the JV
game but by a single point,
32-31.
Freshman Sydney Kassuba
crashed the boards, securing
eight rebounds to go with
seven points. Karemba cor-
ralled six points and Lauren
Hintz landed four points with
seven rebounds. Sydney
Meadows made five points
and Joslyn Rider rode the rim
for five points and grabbed
seven rebounds and nailed
some clutch free throws at
the end.
Gaylord played at
Cheboygan on Tuesday of this
week and goes to Petoskey on
Thursday, Dec. 8.

CHEBOYGAN -- The Bay
Area Reps traveled to
Cheboygan to battle the
Chiefs in their Northern
Michigan Hockey League
opener on Friday, and the
Chiefs dominated play and
outscored the Reps 4-1.
In the opening period the
Reps managed only two
shots on goal and Cheboygan
was limited to six shots, but
two of those shots found
their way into the back of the
net.
Kasey Lofgren scored off a
pretty assist from Sam
Charboneau 6 minutes and
51 seconds into the opening
period to give the Chiefs a 1-
0 lead. Less than 2 minutes
later Jake Elmore gave the
Chiefs a two-goal advantage,
hitting the first of his two
goals in the contest with
assists from Eryn Eustice and
Stan Swiderek.
Elmore scored his second
goal of the night 2:10 into the
middle period with an assist
to Eustice.
It was persistent P.J. Heger
who lit the scoring lamp for
the Reps in the game, scoring
an unassisted goal with a fine
effort with 8:41 left in the sec-
ond period. The Chiefs
Dylan Wilkinson pushed
Cheboygans lead to 4-1,
though, with an unassisted
goal of his own with 5:28
remaining in the second
period.
That would be the final
score of the night as
Cheboygan improved its
record to 3-0-1 overall and 1-
0 in the NMHL action while
the Reps fell to 1-2 and 0-1 in
the NMHL.
The Reps return to action
this weekend when they host
a tournament at Center Ice in
Traverse City with Escanaba,
St. Johns/Dewitt, and the
Northwest Warriors coming
to town.

HOUGHTON Gaylord
made its annual December
trip north of the bridge over
the weekend to participate in
the always-tough Joe
Bukovich Classic tourna-
ment at Houghton.
The Blue Devils won in
overtime against Painesdale-
Jeffers on Friday in the semi-
finals when freshman phe-
nom Mitchell Lightning
Lawton found the back of the
net with a laser blast at the
2:02 mark of the extra ses-
sion. In Saturdays champi-
onship game against host
Houghton, though, the Blue
Devils could not generate
much offense and had to set-
tle for tourney runner-up,
losing to the Gremlins 3-0.
Gaylord led 3-1 in the
Jeffers game before the Jets
rallied to tie the score and
force overtime. It was senior
captain and playmaker
Spencer Bajko in the middle
of the action once again, set-
ting up the speeding Lawton
for the game-winner with a
gem of a pass. Lawton struck
with the suddenness of a
cobra, whistling the puck
past the Jet goalie to end the
game in dramatic fashion.
Bajko had two assists in the
game and Willis Gelow also
recorded an assist.
Dangerous Derek Axford, the
hero of the Kalamazoo tour-
ney, lit the scoring lamp
twice more for his fifth and
sixth goals of the young sea-
son. Harrison Quaal also
contributed to the victory,
banging one home unassist-
ed for his first goal of the
campaign.
Tony Apa did a nice job in
his first game between the
pipes, stopping 25 of 28 shots
directed his way.
In the championship game
against Houghton, the Blue
Devils were without the serv-
ices of Axford and Bajko, who
had been dinged up the day
before, and could only
muster 10 shots on net
against a very talented oppo-
nent. Connor Hannon, Drake
Anderson and Aaron
Kolehmainen scored power-
play goals for Houghton.
Peter Lawton stopped 32 of
35 shots and kept the game
competitive in spite of the
swarming pressure he faced a
times.
Alpena 6, Petoskey 2
PETOSKEY Kyle Ruggles
made the twine dance twice
in the back of the net on
Saturday but it wasnt
enough for host Petoskey to
turn back talented Alpena in
a Big North Conference
clash. The Wildcats prevailed
6-2 to push their early con-
ference record to 2-0.
Petoskey, which had lost in
another league clash to T.C.
West on Friday, slipped to 0-4
overall and 0-2 in the Big
North.
Ruggles rocket blasts
received assists from Skye
Pieffer and Pat Gitre. Junior
netminder Breanna Merriam
stopped 32 of 36 shots.
Jared Kwiatkowski and
Sam Rumbles each scored
twice for Alpena while Garret
Bailey and Zach Nash had
lone goals.
Petoskey returns to action
this Friday, Dec. 9, on the ice
of non-league foe Manistee.
Elmore scores twice as host Chiefs win NMHL opener,
push record to 3-0-1 overall

Friend is 2011 Player of Year
Top Choice Volleyball
by Mike Dunn
GAYLORD For the fourth
year in a row, Pellston has
produced the Top Choice All-
Area Player of the Year. For
the second year in a row, 5-
foot-10 senior outside hitter
Tayler Friend has earned the
honor.
Friend, a four-year varsity
starter for the Hornets and
two-time first-team All-
Stater, was a fearsome force
up front in her senior season,
firing out missiles in match
after match with lethal preci-
sion. Friend, who was named
to first-team All-State in
Class D for the second
straight time, accumulated a
whopping 693 kills this sea-
son with 44 blocks, 91 aces
and a team-high 449 digs.
The Friendly Fire up front
helped Pellston and to gener-
ate 47 wins in 2011, a Ski
Valley championship for the
11th time in 12 years and
Class D district and regional
titles for the fifth straight
year.
Friend senior teammate
Samantha McNitt, another
four-year varsity player at
setter, is also a Dream Team
member after putting up eye-
popping numbers all season
long. McNitt, a second-team
All-State choice, amassed
1,214 assists with 87 aces and
51 kills and she served with
surgical precision, hitting on
97 percent of her attempts.
Other Dream Team 2011
members include Petoskeys
towering junior middle hitter
Megan Tompkins, who
amassed 631 kills and 137
blocks this season and was a
Class A honorable mention
All-State pick, Cheboygans
super Class B All-Region sen-
ior back-row specialist
Mandy Williams, versatile

The 2011 Coach of the Year
honors goes to Graylings
Jessica Szymoniak, who
guided the Vikings to a sur-
prising runner-up finish
behind Charlevoix in the
rugged Lake Michigan
Conference and a Class B dis-
trict championship.
Szymoniaks motto this
year was Play to win; dont
play not to lose. Fueled by
the strong play of Cooper
and Swander and the contri-
butions of fellow All-
Conference picks Cara Miller
and Elaine DesEnfants,
Grayling posted a 12-2 record
in the league and was 10-0
at one point and forged a
28-7-6 record, its best in a
decade. Grayling defeated
Houghton Lake and
Roscommon to capture the
district championship and
earn a berth in the regional
tourney at Cadillac.
Joining Szymoniak on the
2011 Top Choice coaching
staff are Chris Myers of
Pellston, who did an out-
standing job in his first year
at the helm of the varsity
after serving as an assistant
coach since 1999, and Steve
Watson of Onaway, who led
the Cardinals to a strong fin-
ish in the Ski Valley and a
Class D district champi-
onship.

Snowbird gals tough at home!
St. Mary 47, Pickford 37
By Mike Dunn
GAYLORD The St. Mary
girls faced a rugged U.P.
opponent in the 2011-12
home opener on Friday but
managed to pull away in the
second half and post an
impressive 47-37 victory over
the visiting Panthers.
The Snowbirds were able
to break open a very close
game with the defensive
pressure they are noted for.
Coach Kevin Fosters troops
led just 23-22 at the half
before converting turnovers
into quick points and build-
ing a 33-26 lead by the end of
the third quarter and a 41-26
advantage by the midway
point of the fourth quarter.
St. Marys defense, fueled
by the fiery play of gotcha
guards Chrissy Smith and
Kari Borowiak, held the
Panthers to four points over a
span of about 12 minutes.
Smith sank a game-high 15
points to pace the victors and
Borowiak made the twine
twitch to the tune of 13
points. Borowiak also record-
ed seven steals.
Senior forward Karli Jacob,
entering the final season of a
notable prep hardwood
career, also showed up big at
both ends. On defense, she
covered the floor like a fresh
coat of wax, accumulating 10
steals. She also accounted for
11 points and eight rebounds
and very nearly had a triple-
double.
Olivia Smith paced the
Panthers with 13 points.
In St. Marys season-open-
ing 49-39 victory at Boyne
City, Jacob jammed the nets
for a team-high 17 points
while junior Mary Spyhalski
sprayed the twine for 11
points and the hard-nosed
Borowiak attacked the iron
for 10 points, attacked the
boards for 11 rebounds and
attacked her fellow guards to
gather eight steals.

BOYNE FALLS It went
right to the wire and junior
Kallie Derrer proved to be the
difference for Mancelona.
Derrer calmly cashed in on a
pair of free throws with 18
seconds remaining to score
the game-winning points as
the Lady Ironmen edged host
Boyne Falls 52-51 in a real
nail biter.
Kallie finished the night
with 30 of her teams 52
points, helping Mancelona
rally from an eight-point
deficit in the third quarter.
She also grabbed 10
rebounds for a double-dou-
ble to go with five steals and
three assists.
Ashley Derrer also helped
the cause, generating seven
points with 10 rebounds
while Vanessa Batchelor put
six on the board and was 4-
for-4 from the stripe.
Kelsey Matelski stood tall
for the Loggers, earning a
double-double with 17
points and 16 rebounds.
Mancelona played host to
Inland Lakes in the Ski Valley
opener for both teams on
Wednesday of this week.
Johannesburg-Lewiston 72
Fairview 30
JOHANNESBURG The
Johannesburg-Lewiston girls
were big into piracy in their
season opener at home
against Fairview on Tuesday,
Nov. 29. The Cardinals of
coach Heather Huff known
for their intense defensive
pressure stole the ball a
whopping 33 times in a 72-30
triumph.
Junior wing Abby
Schlicher, a third-year varsity
starter for Huff, did every-
thing but wear a patch over
one of her eyes and walk with
a peg leg. She was Blackbeard
in a white-and-red uniform,
accounting for 10 of her
teams steals on the night.
She also scored 13 points
with seven rebounds and a
team-high four assists.
Sweet-shooting sopho-
more Brittany Cherwinski,
who is in her second year on
the J-L varsity, looked right at
home in the opener, making
the twine dance to the tune
of a team-high 19 points and
she acquired a double-dou-
ble with 11 rebounds.
Smooth-striding senior
guard Miranda House rang
up 17 points to join
Cherwinski and Schlicher in
double digits.
Long-armed junior
Hannah Huff grabbed eight
boards to help the cause and
junior Hailey Reasner
reached out and grabbed six
boards.
Huff called it a good first
game. The Cardinals opened
Ski Valley play on Wednesday,
Dec. 7, against always-tough
Onaway in a game that was
played after this issue went to
press and are home again on
Friday, Dec. 9, against league
foe Forest Area.
The Cards also won the JV
game 53-32 as Julia Nieman
jammed the nets with a
team-high 14 points to lead a
balanced attack while Hailey
Weaver hit for 12 and
Shannon Kievit and Maddie
Ewing each tallied eight.
Glen Lake 80
Grayling 69
MAPLE CITY Jo Hamlin
hammered the nets for 23
points for Grayling in spite of
early foul trouble but it was-
nt enough to offset a two-
pronged attack from host
Glen Lake on Friday. The
Vikings lost 80-69 to fall to 1-
1.
Senior forward Josie
Swander played hard inside,
grabbing 13 rebounds for the
Vikings.
Taylor Martin tallied 37
points to lead Glen Lake and
Scotlyn Brengman was the
other half of the 1-2 punch,
scoring 23. They each also
hauled in 11 rebounds.
In Graylings 51-35 win at
Roscommon on Wednesday,
Nov. 30, in the season opener,
Hamlin, who is off to a whale
of a start for coach Joe
Powers, had another big
night, ripping the nets for 20
points and cleaning the glass
for 14 rebounds.
GAYLORD -- The Gaylord
freshmen girls defeated
Harbor Springs 43-30 on
Monday night. Coach Terri
Woods reports that Aimee
Kilbourn had a killer game,
draining the nets for 13
points with 2 steals. Center
Cierra Woods was a tower of
power in the paint. She
struck for 7 points to go with
9 rebounds and 5 blocked
shots.
Ashlee Zeiter zeroed in to
score 4 while Lauren Reed
and Julia Chwatun each
scored 2 and Reed also
reached out and grabbed 8
rebounds.
"Great game played by the

PETOSKEY The Petoskey
girls basketball team opened
the season over the weekend
in the annual home tourna-
ment and lost to a pair of
quality opponents. After
dropping a 38-30 decision to
perennial Class A power
Marquette in a hard-fought
opener on Friday, Petoskey
faced Brighton on Saturday
and suffered a 52-32 setback.
The young Northmen of
first-year coach Adam
Dobrowolski are still a work
in progress at this point but
gained a lot of valuable expe-
rience heading into the Big
North portion of the sched-
ule this week against
Gaylord.
Junior center Megan
Tompkins pulled down a
team-high seven rebounds
and scored a team-high six
points against Brighton and
she also recorded three
blocks. Liz Fraser and
Hannah Scholten each struck
for five points and Katelynn
Crittenden and Kelsey Ance
each pulled down five
rebounds. Crittenden also
did a creditable job of han-
dling the ball.
Natalie Peterson led
Brighton with 16 points.
Turnovers cost Petoskey in
the loss to Marquette. The
Northmen battled from an
eight-point halftime deficit
to get within three points of
Marquette in the fourth
quarter as Ance, a junior for-
ward, drained a pair of timely
buckets. It was as close as
they would get, however.
Ance generated nine
points with a workmanlike
effort and pulled down six
boards and Crittenden tallied
eight. Tompkins delivered six
points and six rebounds in
the hard-fought, physical
contest.
Mellie Tuma, who made
the All-Tournament team,
scored 12 for Marquette.
St. Ignace, the defending
Class C state champion, won
the tournament with a 52-49
victory over Marquette.

OVER 30 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE
December 11 at the United
Methodist Church,
Petoskey, 3:00 pm
Dance Attack of Mancelona and the Little
Traverse Youth Choir (LTYC) will present a
collaborative winter concert at the Petoskey
United Methodist Church on Sunday,
December 11 at 3:00 pm. The LTYC, Touring
Choir and Treble Choirs, directed by Heather
Marvin of Petoskey, and Dance Attack,
directed by Jeannine Sladick of East Jordan,
will be collaborating on several programs
this season including joint concerts and at
least two joint production numbers integrat-
ing the dancers and singers. Dance Attack is
a program of Concord Montessori and
Community School (CMCS) in Mancelona.
Both groups participated in the 2011
Children of the World in Harmony
International Youth Choir & Dance Festival
presented by Voices Without Borders, Inc.
this past summer. The December11th pro-
gram will feature a wonderful variety of tra-
ditional dance styles including the highly
energetic Appalachian Clogging, Irish,
French Canadian, and English step-dances
plus contemporary and sacred and secular
works in two and three part arrangements
for treble choir.
The LTYC has appeared with the Little
Traverse Choral Society and the Young
Americans and participated in the 2010
Children of the World International Choir
and Dance Festival. The LTYC is currently
comprised of thirty-eight singers ages 8-18
from throughout northern Michigan. Later
this month the choir will open for the
Messiah concerts in Petoskey, and this spring
they will go on a Midwest concert tour and
perform Carmina Burana with the Great
Lakes Chamber Orchestra and Chorus.
Heather Marvin, Director of the LTYC is
enrichment coordinator at Petoskey Middle
School. She has been the Music Director of
the Little Traverse Youth Choir since its
founding last February. She formerly direct-
ed several Petoskey Middle School musicals,
church childrens and adult choirs, and is
Associate Producer of the Children of the
World in Harmony International Youth Choir
& Dance Festivals.
Jeannine Sladick began her dance career
when she performed with "Dance All Night"
in the 1980's, and subsequently with "Step in
Time", and the "Step Sisters". Her greatest
passion is to share her enthusiasm for tradi-
tional dance and keep the folk process alive!
Jeannine is Artistic Director of the student
traditional step dance company "Dance
Attack!" at Concord Montessori and
Community School of Mancelona, Michigan.
The Little Traverse Youth Choir is a pro-
gram of Voices Without Borders, Inc., a local
non-profit organization, which produced the
Children of the World in Harmony
International Youth Choir and Dance
Festivals the last three summers. VWB, Inc.

Dancers swirl on the dance floor to the tunes of the Cedar
Swamp Boys at a recent dance. The band will return for a
dance sponsored by the Retired & Senior Volunteer Program
(RSVP) on Sunday, December 11 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at
the Petoskey Friendship Center. Music will be played for round
dances, waltzes and squares, and dancers with all levels of
dancing ability will be out on the floor having a good time.
These dances are also popular with non-dancers who enjoy
listening to good music in the company of good friends. The
public is invited. Admission is $4. Attendees are asked to bring
finger food to share; beverages will be provided. Please note
that the dance will be cancelled if the weekend brings 3 or
more of new snow. For more information, contact the
Friendship Centers of Emmet County Council on Aging at
(231) 347-3211 or (888) 347-0369.

How To
Prepare
Your House
For Sale
Compliments of

Part 3
Prepping and staging a
house. Every seller wants her
home to sell fast and bring
top dollar. Does that sound
good to you? Well, it's not luck
that makes that happen. It's
careful planning and knowing
how to professionally spruce
up your home that will send
home buyers scurrying for
their checkbooks. Here is how
to prep a house and turn it
into an irresistible and mar-
ketable home.
Here's How:
8. Make the House Sparkle.
Wash windows inside and
out.
Rent a pressure washer and
spray down sidewalks and
exterior.
Clean out cobwebs.
Re-caulk tubs, showers and
sinks.
Polish chrome faucets and
mirrors.
Clean out the refrigerator.
Vacuum daily.
Wax floors.
Dust furniture, ceiling fan
blades and light fixtures.
Bleach dingy grout.
Replace worn rugs.
Hang up fresh towels.
Bathroom towels look great
fastened with ribbon and
bows.
Clean and air out any
musty smelling areas. Odors
are a no-no.
9. Scrutinize.
Go outside and open your
front door. Stand there. Do
you want to go inside? Does
the house welcome you?
Linger in the doorway of
every single room and imag-
ine how your house will look
to a buyer.
Examine carefully how fur-
niture is arranged and move
pieces around until it makes
sense.
Make sure window cover-
ings hang level.
Tune in to the room's state-
ment and its emotional pull.
Does it have impact and piz-
zazz?
Does it look like nobody
lives in this house? You're
almost finished.
10. Check Curb Appeal.
If a buyer won't get out of
her agent's car because she
doesn't like the exterior of
your home, you'll never get
her inside.
Keep the sidewalks cleared.
Mow the lawn.
Paint faded window trim.
Plant yellow flowers or
group flower pots together.
Yellow evokes a buying emo-
tion. Marigolds are inexpen-
sive.
Trim your bushes.
Make sure visitors can
clearly read your house num-
ber.

Real Estate
By Jim Akans
Its the perfect setting for a lifestyle reflecting all the won-
derful attributes that Northern Michigan has to offer. This
1,700 square foot chalet style home, located about midway
between Cheboygan and Rogers City, is set upon 30 glorious
wooded acres, and features approximately 1/4 mile of
frontage on pristine and peaceful Clear Lake.
The interior design features four bedrooms and three baths,
so there is plenty of space for the growing family or accom-
modating family and friends who come for a visit to this pri-
vate paradise. Other highlights include six-person indoor hot
tub, and a large 40-foot deck overlooking Clear Lake. While
the kitchen area is certainly well laid out and functional, and
the seller is offering a $7,500 allowance for updatingnow
thats a bonus!
The home has an attached two-and-a-half car garage, and
there is a separate 24 x 64 building on the grounds that offers
additional storage space for vehicles, snowmobiles or ATVs,
and the structure also includes a heated workshop area.
There is even another 10 x 20 storage shed on the property
that is ideal for storing lake toys and grounds maintenance
gear.
Other highlights include three ground blinds and a tree
blind for hunting, a set up slab for an RV or camper with dedicated well, septic and electric
hook-ups. There is approximately 1,500 feet of electric fencing that will keep pets safely at
home, and less than a mile away are thousands of acres of State Land and ORV trails.
What a wonderful set-up and location for those looking to create a private Northern
Michigan retreat, and with a listing price recently reduces to just $292,500 and the $7,5000
remodeling perk, this is also a fabulous real estate value.
