BALL MILL GRINDING

AIM :1. To determine the energy required to grind sample of coal/sand/gravel & calculate Rittingers constant. 2. To determine critical speed of ball mill. APPARATUS :Tubular ball mill with baffles & balls. The mill is placed on rollers. Balance, weight box, sieves, etc. MATERIALS :Coal/sand/gravel sample. THEORY :Bonds law,
P W i = T 10 1 Dsb (1) Dsa 1

Where, P=Power in KW T=Tones of feed in one hour of grinding time(Feed rate in tons/hour) Dsa & Dsb= Diameters of sieves through which 80% of the feed & product pass respectively in mm. Wi=Work index in KWh/tones {or KW/(tons/hr)} The work index for the Coal/sand/gravel can be found from the literature & using Bonds law.(Eq. 1) we can find out power required for grinding. The equation for Rittingers law is as follows :
P 1 1 = KR .(2) T Dsa Dsb

P = Energy required found from eq. (1) T

Dsa & Dsb = volume surface mean diameter obtain from graph of 1/Dp v/s . Thus Rittingers constatnt KR can be found using eq. (2).

PROCEDURE:1. Measure all the dimensions of the mill i.e. dia., length, speed, ball dia. etc. 2. Take 200 gm of uniformly mixed feed. Carry out screen analysis taking 100 gm of feed. 3. Now feed 200 gm of sample in the mill charged with ball. 4. Grind the sample for 10 minutes. 5. Take out the material & carry out the screen analysis with 100 gm of uniformly mixed product. 6. Note the observation in the table. RESULT:1. 2. 3. The critical speed of ball mill=___________rpm Energy required to grind the sample is =___________KWH/Ton Rittingers constant KR is=_______________

in above 2. Critical speed ( c) of ball mill:

c =

Where, R = Radius of Ballmill in Cm g = Gravitational Acceleration=981 cm/s2 r = Radius of Ball c in RPS convert it into RPM 3. Calculation of power consumption :
P W i = T 10 1 Dsb (1) Dsa 1

Where, Wi = work index Dsa= Diameter of feed Dsb= Diameter of Product If we measure the power consumption using Energy meter then we can calculate work index of the given material. 4. Calculate Rittingers constant for given material using equation : Use the value of Power consumption calculated above or the value measured by Energy meter.
