Hereditary chief and lone treaty negotiator for the Gitxsan, in that $7million deal with Enbridge announced Friday, is Elmer Derrick known here in Merritt, where he was appointed in 1995 to the board of the NVIT. That was the beginning of his forray into politics. In the past 16 years, it appears hes become a favourite appointee of the BC Liberals, given posts on BC Hydro Board of Directors, the First Peoples' Advisory Committee, Powerex (BC's electricity trading crown corporation), Northwest Power Line Coalition, and the National Committee on Sustainable Development, Indian and Northern Affairs Canada. However, the greater Gitxsan people are outraged with Elmers Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipeline agreement, and fired him on Monday. The Gitxsan people say they had no knowledge of the proposed agreement nor were they consulted. The [Gitxsan] representatives say that Mr. Derrick has embarrassed and shamed the Gitxsan people by undermining the 61 First Nations who are opposed to the project. Hospice, dedicated to the support of the terminally ill and bereaved, will provide an opportunity to remember loved ones during the annual Celebrate-a-Life campaign. Place a name tag on their Celebrate-a-Life tree in remembrance of a loved one. As this campaign is our main fundraising campaign, your donations are appreciated. Funds from this campaign are used to update our lending library and assist in the operation of our Society. Tax receipts are issued for donations over $20. Volunteers will be at Extra Foods on Dec. 9 & 10, and Dec. 16 & 17, 11am5pm. There is also info on their services and Living with Loss group session. To Be 8 again! A man was sitting on the edge of the bed, watching his wife, who was looking at herself in the mirror. Since her birthday was not far off he asked what she'd like to have for her birthday. 'I'd like to be eight again', she replied, still looking in the mirror. On the morning of her Birthday, he arose early, made her a nice big bowl of Coco Pops, and then took her to Adventure World theme park. What a day! He put her on every ride in the park; the Death Slide, the Wall of Fear, the Screaming Roller Coaster, everything there was. Five hours later they staggered out of the theme park. Her head was reeling and her stomach felt upside down. He then took her to a McDonald's where he ordered her a Happy Meal with extra fries and a chocolate shake. Then it was off to a movie, popcorn, a soda pop, and her favorite candy, M&M's. What a fabulous adventure! Finally she wobbled home with her husband and collapsed into bed exhausted. He leaned over his wife with a big smile and lovingly asked, 'Well Dear, what was it like being eight again?' Her eyes slowly opened and her expression sud(Thanks, Bob!) KL denly changed. 'I meant my dress size, you dummy!!!!'
