Getting Started with VMware View

ThisguideprovidesanoverviewofhowtoinstallViewManagercomponentsandprovisionvirtualdesktops. AdditionalViewManagerdocumentationisavailableat http://www.vmware.com/support/pubs/view_pubs.html

Prerequisites
IfyouarenotfamiliarwithViewManager,seeViewComponentReferenceonpage 12forabriefdescription oftheViewManagercomponentsyouwillinstall. ReviewtheSystemRequirementssectionoftheViewManagerAdministrationGuidefordetailedinformation abouttherequirementstoinstallandconfigureViewManager,includingthesupportedoperatingsystemsfor eachcomponent. ThefollowingareprerequisitestoinstallingViewManager:

ObtainavalidlicensekeyforViewManager. IfyouwanttouseViewComposerorViewClientwithOfflineDesktop,makesurethatyouhavealicense forthefeaturesyouwanttouse.

InstallandconfigureVMwareInfrastructure 3.0.2(supported)orVMwareInfrastructure 3.5 (recommended). VirtualCenter2.5Update3orUpdate4isrequiredtousetheViewComposerorOffline Desktopfeatures. ToupgradeVMwareInfrastructure,followtheinstructionsintheVMware VirtualCenterUpgradeGuide.

InstallMicrosoftSyspreptoolsonyourVirtualCenterserverifyouwanttoapplycustomization specificationstostandard(ratherthanViewComposerlinkedclone)desktoppools. ViewManagerusesyourexistingActiveDirectoryinfrastructureforuserauthenticationand management.ThefollowingversionsofActiveDirectoryaresupported:

(Optional) Install View Composer on the VirtualCenter Server


ViewComposerprovidesaversatileandhighlystorageefficientalternativetocreatingandmanagingmany standalonevirtualmachines.WithViewComposerlinkedclonetechnology,youcanrapidlycloneanddeploy multipledesktopsfromasinglecentralizedbaseimage.Subsequentchangestothisimagecanbe automaticallyproliferatedamongalldesktopsinalinkedclonepool.Afterthedesktopsarecreated,they remainindirectlylinkedtoasnapshotresidingontheParentVM. IfyoudonotwanttouseViewComposer,youcanskipthissection.

TostoreViewComposerdata,aSQLdatabaseservermustberesidenton,oravailableto,theVirtualCenter server.MicrosoftSQLServer,Oracle9i,andOracle10garesupported.ViewComposercanuseanexisting databaseserver,forexample,theMicrosoftSQLServer2005ExpressinstanceprovidedwithVirtualCenterby default.IfyouareinstallingonthesameSQLServerinstanceasVirtualCenter,donotoverwritethe VirtualCenterdatabase.Fordetaileddatabaserequirements,seetheSystemRequirementssectionofthe View ManagerAdministrationGuide. TouseViewComposer,youmustinstalltheViewComposerservice(VMware-viewcomposer-xxxxxx.exe, wherexxxxxxisthebuildnumberofthefile)onyourVirtualCenterserver,andconfigureittouseadata sourcethatisdedicatedtothestorageoflinkedclones.FordetailedinformationaboutViewComposer installationanddatabaseconfiguration,seetheView ComposerchapteroftheViewManagerAdministration Guide.

Install View Connection Server on a Dedicated Server


ViewConnectionServeractsasabrokerforclientconnectionsbyauthenticatingandthendirectingincoming remotedesktopuserrequeststotheappropriatevirtualdesktop,physicaldesktop,orterminalserver. YoumustrunViewConnectionServerona32bitor64bitdedicatedphysicalorvirtualserver.Fordetailed informationaboutthehardware,operatingsystem,andActiveDirectoryrequirementsforViewConnection Server,seetheSystemRequirementssectionoftheViewManagerAdministrationGuide. AstandardserverdeploymentcreatesasinglestandaloneViewConnectionServer.Thisservercanlater becomethefirstserverinstancewithinareplicatedViewConnectionServergroup.DonotrunViewManager 3.1asareplicaofearlierViewManagerreleases. To install a standard server 1 RunthefollowingexecutableonthesystemthatwillhostViewConnectionServer,wherexxxxxxisthe buildnumberofthefile: VMware-viewconnectionserver-xxxxxx.exe 2 3 4 5 6 7 WhentheVMwareInstallationwizardappears,clickNext. Perform Initial Configuration with View Administrator


UseViewAdministrator,theWebbasedadministrativecomponentofViewManager,toperform View ConnectionServerconfiguration.FordetailedinformationabouttheoperatingsystemandWebbrowser requirementsforViewAdministrator,seetheSystemRequirementssectionoftheViewManagerAdministration Guide.

Log In to View Administrator


AfteryouinstallViewConnectionServer,logintoViewAdministratortoperforminitialconfigurationtasks.

To log in to View Administrator 1 OpenaWebbrowsersupportedbyViewAdministratorandenterthefollowingURL,where<server>is thehostnameorIPaddressoftheViewConnectionServerinstance: https://<server>/admin ViewAdministratorisaccessedusingasecure(SSL)connection.Thefirsttimeyouconnect,yourWeb browsermightpresentyouwithanintermediarypagethatwarnsyouthatthesecuritycertificate associatedwiththeaddressisnotissuedbyatrustedcertificateauthority.Thisresponseisexpected behavior,becausethedefaultrootcertificatesuppliedwithViewConnectionServerisselfsigned. 2 3 ClickIgnoretocontinueusingthecurrentSSLcertificate. Loginusingtheappropriatecredentials. Initially,alldomainusersthataremembersofthelocaladministratorsgroupontheViewConnection ServersystemareallowedtologintoViewAdministrator.YoucanuseViewAdministrator (Configuration>Administrators)tochangethelistofViewManageradministratorslater.

Install the License Key


Thefirsttimeyoulogin,ViewAdministratordisplaystheConfigurationview.IftheConfigurationviewisnot displayed,clicktheConfigurationbuttonatthetopofthewindow. Afteryouinstalllicensekey,theDesktopviewisdisplayedwhenyoulogin. To install the license key 1 2 3 4 FromtheConfigurationtab,clickProductLicensingandUsageintheleftnavigationpane. IntheProductLicensingtable,clickEditLicenseandentertheViewManagerlicensekey. ClickOK. Verifythelicenseexpirationdate.

Add the VirtualCenter Server


Afteryouinstallthelicencekey,youmustconfiguretheVirtualCenterservertousewithViewManager. To add a VirtualCenter server entry in View Administrator 1 2 FromwithinViewAdministrator,clickConfigurationtodisplaytheConfigurationview. UnderVirtualCenterServers,clickAdd,andcompletethedetailsfortheVirtualCenterserver. a Enterthefullyqualifieddomainname(FQDN)orIPaddressoftheVirtualCenterserveryouwant ViewManagertocommunicatewithintheServeraddresstextbox. TheFQDNincludesthehostnameandthedomainname.Forexample,intheFQDN myserverhost.companydomain.com,myserverhostisthehostname,andcompanydomain.comis thedomain. b EnterthenameofanadministrativeuserintheUsernametextbox. TouseVirtualCenterwithViewManager,administrativeusersmusthavepermissiontocarryout certainoperationsinVirtualCenter.Thesepermissionsaregrantedbycreatingandassigning VirtualCenterrolestoaViewManageruserfromwithinVirtualCenter.VirtualCenteradministrative usershavealltherequisitepermissionsenabledbydefault. c d e EnterthepasswordthatcorrespondstotheadministrativeuserinthePasswordtextbox. IfyouarenotusingViewComposer,skiptoStep 8. 3 ClickCheckforViewComposerCompatibilitytoverifythattheView Composerserviceisrunningon theVirtualCenterserver. Ifthecheckissuccessful,theViewComposerSettingspropertygroupappears. 4 5 MakesurethatEnableViewComposerisselectedandthattheportnumbercorrespondstotheport specifiedduringtheinstallationoftheView ComposerserviceontheVirtualCenterserver. ClickAddtoentertherequireddetailsintheAddQuickPrepDomaindialogbox. EntertheFQDNoftheActiveDirectorydomain(forexample,domain.com),theusernameincludingthe FQDN(forexample,domain.com\admin),andthepasswordforthespecifieduser. Thecredentialsprovidedmustrepresentadomainaccount,createdbyyourActiveDirectory administrator,thathaspermissiontoaddandremovemachineaccountsfromthespecifiedactive directorycontainer.ViewComposerusestheaddeddomainsandassociatedusercredentialstojoin linkedclonestoadomain. 6 7 ClickAdd. ClickOK. TheViewComposeruserisaddedtotheQuickPrepdomainslist. 8 ClickOKtoclosetheVirtualCentersettingsdialogbox.

(Optional) Configure an External URL for View Connection Server


TheexternalURListheURLthatViewConnectionServer(orasecurityserver)returnstoViewClientsothat itcanestablishaconnection.YoumighthavetosettheexternalURLtoprovideanalternateDNSnameorIP addressthatcanberesolvedfromclientsystems. To set the external URL on a standard or replica server 1 2 3 FromtheConfigurationtab,clickServersintheleftnavigationpane. UnderViewServers,selectaViewConnectionServerentryandclickEdit. EnteraURLintheExternalURLfield. Youmustincludetheprotocol,address,andportnumber.Forexample: https://view.example.com:443 4 ClickOK.

Create and Prepare the Guest System


Theguestsystemofthevirtualmachine,whichyoucreateinVirtualCenter,providesthebasisforvirtual desktopdeployment.Toprepareaguestsystemfordeployment,performthefollowingtasks:

Installtheguestoperatingsystem.IfyouareinstallingWindowsXPasyourguestoperatingsystem, reviewtheadditionalinstructionsandguidelinesintheWindowsXPDeploymentGuideat http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/resources/vmwareviewxpdeploymentguide.pdf

InstallthelatestversionofVMwareTools(providedwithVMwareInfrastructure). InstallMicrosoftservicepacksandWindowsupdates. Installantivirussoftware. Installotherapplications,suchasWindowsMediaPlayerifyouareusingMMR.

Installanyrequiredsmartcard(suchasCommonAccessCard)drivers. Configurenetworkproxysettings. ConfigureActiveDirectorysettings. a ConfigurethepreferredandalternateDNSserverstouseyourActiveDirectoryserveraddresses. Forexample,onWindowsXP,configuretheDNSserversettingsfromthepropertiesmenu: Start>ControlPanel>NetworkConnections>LAN>PropertiesInternetProtocol(TCP/IP)> Properties>UsethefollowingDNSserveraddresses b JointheguestsystemtotheappropriateActiveDirectorydomain.

Install View Agent on the Guest System


YoumustinstallViewAgentontheguestsystemtoenableViewConnectionServertocommunicatewith virtualdesktops. CAUTIONYoumustinstallViewAgentafterallotherthirdpartyapplicationsareinstalled.Afteryouinstall ViewAgent,youmustuninstallitbeforeinstallingadditionalthirdpartyapplications.Ifyouinstallother thirdpartyapplicationsafterinstallingView Agent,andthenuninstallViewAgent,certainregistryentriesfor theotherthirdpartyapplicationsmightbelost.Applicationsknowntobeaffectedbytheinstallationorder includeMicrosoftAppV,vmSightConnectorID,andCitrixPresenter. To install View Agent 1 Runthefollowingexecutableontheguestsystem,wherexxxxxxisthebuildnumberofthefile:

WhentheVMwareInstallationwizardappears,clickNext. AccepttheVMwarelicensetermsandclickNext. Selectyourcustomsetupoptions.YoumustinstalltheViewManagerComposerAgentifyouwantto deployViewComposerlinkedclonedesktops.Youcanalsoselectordeselectthefollowingfeatures:

InstalltheViewSecureAuthenticationcomponentifyouwanttoenablesinglesignon(SSO).If enabled,whenuserslogintoViewClienttheyarenotadditionallypromptedtoreentertheir authenticationinformationtologintotheirvirtualdesktops. InstalltheUSBRedirectioncomponentifvirtualdesktopusersneedtoaccesslocallyconnectedUSB deviceswiththeirvirtualdesktops.(Windows2000doesnotsupportUSBredirection.) InstalltheVirtualPrintingcomponentifyouwanttoenableuserstoprinttoanyprinteravailableto theirclientsystemswithoutfirstinstallingadditionaldriversontheirvirtualdesktops.

(Optional) Create a Virtual Machine Customization Specification


Customizationspecificationscanexpediteautomateddesktoppooldeploymentsbyprovidingconfiguration informationforgeneralproperties,suchaslicensing,domainattachment,andDHCPsettings. To create a customization specification 1 2 3 4 5 InVirtualCenter,clickEdit>CustomizationSpecifications. ClickNewtocreateanewcustomizationspecification. MakesurethatWindowsisselectedintheTargetVirtualMachineOSdropdownmenu,provideaname andan(optional)descriptionforthecustomizationspecification,andclickNext. EntertheNameandOrganizationtoassociatewiththedesktopsthatyouwillcreateintheautomated desktoppool,andclickNext. SelectoneofthefollowingoptionsandclickNext.

Usethevirtualmachinenameifyouwantthedesktopsinthepooltoderivetheirnamesfromthe nameassignedtoeachdesktopvirtualmachineduringdeploymentfromViewManager.Thisisthe recommendedoption. Useaspecificnameifyouwantthedesktopsinthepooltoderivetheirnamesfromapredefined label.Ifyouselectthisoption,alsoselectAppendanumericvaluetoensureuniqueness.

EnterthelicensenumberforthevirtualdesktopoperatingsystemintheProductIDfield,specifywhether thisisasingleormultipleseatlicense,andclickNext. EnterandconfirmthelocaladministratorpasswordandclickNext. SelectthelocaltimezonefromthedropdownmenuandclickNext. (Optional)Provideoneormorecommandpromptinstructionstobeexecutedthefirsttimeauser connects. a b EnteracommandinthefieldprovidedandclickAdd. RepeatforeachcommandandclickNextwhenyouhavefinished.

SelectthesettingforyournetworkinterfaceandclickNext. TherecommendedselectionisTypicalsettings.

Specifyhowthedesktopsderivedfromthistemplatewillparticipateinyournetwork. Ifyouwanttoautomaticallyadddeployeddesktopstoadomain,selectWindowsServerDomainand enterthedomainname.Intheusername,password,andpasswordconfirmationfields,enterthe credentialsforauserthathastherequisitepermissionstoaddsystemstothisdomain.

MakesurethatGenerateNewSecurityID(SID)isselectedandclickNext. TheReadytoCompletepageappears. YoucanclickBacktomodifyanypreviouspage.

ClickFinishtosavetheguestcustomizationspecification.

Thecustomizationmighttakeseveralminutestocomplete.Whencompleted,makesurethatthenewvirtual machineisjoinedtoyourActiveDirectorydomain. YoucannowassigntheguestcustomizationspecificationtoaViewManagerautomateddesktoppoolwhen youprovisionvirtualdesktops.

Create a Virtual Machine Template for Standard Virtual Desktops


Afteryouinstallandconfiguretheguestsystem,convertthevirtualmachinetoatemplate.Youcanthenuse thetemplateasadesktopsourceforautomateddesktoppools.

ViewComposerlinkedclonevirtualdesktopsuseasnapshotinsteadofavirtualmachinetemplateasabase image.Thisdeploymentoptionisdescribedin(Optional)DeployaViewComposerVirtualDesktopPool onpage 8. To create a virtual machine template in VirtualCenter 1 2 Poweroffthevirtualmachine. Rightclickthepreviouslyconfiguredguestsystemandselectoneofthefollowingoptions:

ClonetoTemplateselectthisoptionifyouwanttousetheselectedguestsystemasthebasisfora newtemplatewithoutalteringthevirtualmachineitself.Ifyouselectthisoptionyouarepresented withasetupwizardthatasksyoutoprovidethenameofthetemplate,environmentalinformation aboutwhereyouwantthetemplatetoreside,andthediskformattouse. ConverttoTemplateselectthisoptionifyouwanttochangetheguestsystemintoatemplate.This processisinstant.

Deploy a Virtual Desktop or Desktop Pool


ViewManagerprovidesflexibilityinhowadesktopiscreated,entitled,delivered,andused.ViewManager supportsthefollowingdesktopdeliverymodels:

IndividualDesktopadesktopthatallowsasingle,preexistingbackendsource. ManualPoolapoolofdesktopsourcesthatisnotprovisionedautomatically.Multipleusersare mappedtomultipledesktops.However,onlyoneuserisactiveonadesktopatatime. AutomatedPoolapoolthatcontainsoneormoredynamicallygenerateddesktopsthatare automaticallycreatedandcustomizedbyViewManagerfromaVirtualCentervirtualmachinetemplate. TerminalServerPoolapoolofterminalserverdesktopsourcesservedbyoneormoreterminalservers. Aterminalserverdesktopsourcecandelivermultipledesktops.

Thissectiondescribeshowtodeployanautomateddesktoppool.Automateddesktoppoolscontainoneor moredynamicallygenerateddesktopsthatareautomaticallycreatedandcustomizedbyViewManagerfrom aVirtualCentervirtualmachinetemplate. Ifyouwanttodeployalinkedclonedesktoppool,see(Optional)DeployaViewComposerVirtualDesktop Poolonpage 8. To deploy an automated desktop pool 1 2 3 4 FromwithinViewAdministrator,clickDesktopsandPools,andclicktheInventorytab. TheuniqueIDisusedbyViewManagertoidentifythedesktoppoolandisthenamethattheusersees whenloggingin.TheuniqueIDanddisplaynamecanbearbitrary,butifyoudonotspecifyadisplay nametheuniqueIDisusedforboth. 7 ConfigurethedesktoppropertiesandclickNext. SelectoneormoredatastoresonwhichtostorethedesktoppoolandclickNext. Fromthefollowingoptions,selecthowyouwouldlikethedesktopscreatedfromtheguestsystemtobe customized,andclickNext.

IfaVirtualCentercustomizationspecificationexists,youcanselectitfromtheUsethis customizationspecificationlisttopreconfigurepropertiessuchaslicensing,domainattachment, andDHCPsettings. Ifyouwanttomanuallyconfigurethedesktopsinthispoolaftertheyhavebeenprovisioned,orifno customizationspecificationisdetected,selectNone Customizationwillbedonemanually. Ifyouwantthevirtualmachinetoremainpoweredoff,selectDonotpoweronvirtualmachines aftercreation.

(Optional)Whenasummaryoftheconfigurationsettingsforthisdeploymentappears,youcanclickBack tomodifyanypreviouspage. ClickFinishtodeploytheautomateddesktoppool.

Afterthedeploymentisinitiated,youcanmonitortheprogressoftheautomateddesktoppoolbyselecting eithertheDesktopsandPoolsorDesktopSourcestabintheGlobaldesktopandpoolviewpane. Afterdeploymentiscomplete,entitleusersorgroupstousethedesktoppoolasdescribedinEntitleUsers andGroupstoDesktopsandDesktopPoolsonpage 10.

(Optional) Deploy a View Composer Virtual Desktop Pool


MakesureyouhaveconfiguredyourVirtualCenterserverforViewComposer,asdescribedinAddthe VirtualCenterServeronpage 3.Beforeyoucancreateanewlinkedclonedesktoppool,youmustmakesure thatViewManagerisabletocontactVirtualCenterandthattheViewComposerservicehasstarted.Aftera connectionisestablished,youcandeployanewViewComposerlinkedclonedesktoppool. WhenyouuseViewComposer,linkedclonesarecreatedfromacentralizedbaseimage,calledaParentVM. AfteryouhavecreatedtheguestsystemandinstalledViewAgent,youmusttakeasnapshot.TheParentVM mustbecompletelyshutdownbeforeyoutakethesnapshot.Thissnapshotisusedasthebaseline configurationforthefirstsetoflinkedclonedesktopsanchoredtotheParentVM. TheParentVMmustremaininastaticandunalteredstateduringthedeploymentprocess. FordetailedinformationaboutViewComposerdeployment,seetheViewComposerchapterofthe View ManagerAdministrationGuide.

To deploy a linked clone desktop pool 1 2 3 4 FromwithinViewAdministrator,clickDesktopsandPoolsandclicktheInventorytab. IntheGlobaldesktopandpoolviewpane,makesurethattheDesktopsandPoolstabisselectedandclick Add. WhentheAddDesktopwizardappears,selectAutomatedDesktopPoolandclickNext. SelectthetypeofdesktoppoolyouwanttocreateandclickNext.

PersistentDesktopsareallocatedstaticallytomakesurethatusersconnecttothesamesystemeach timetheylogin.Desktopassignmenttakesplacethefirsttimeeachuserconnects. NonpersistentDesktopsareallocateddynamicallywhentheuserlogsinandarereturnedtothe poolwhentheuserdisconnects.

Fromthelistprovided,selecttheVirtualCenterservertobeusedbythisdesktopandclickNext. MakesurethatUselinkedclonetechnologytocreatedesktopsinthispoolisselectedandclickNext. TheuniqueIDisusedbyViewManagertoidentifythedesktoppoolandisthenamethattheusersees whenloggingin.TheuniqueIDanddisplaynamecanbearbitrary,butifyoudonotspecifyadisplay nametheuniqueIDisusedforboth.

ConfigurethedesktoppropertiesandclickNext. IfyouareusingWindowsVistaasyourParentVM,youmustsetthepowerpolicytoEnsureVMis alwayspoweredon.

TheStorageOvercommitcolumnentrydetermineshowaggressivelythesystemassignsnewvirtual machinestothefreespaceavailableonadatastore.Asthelevelincreases,lessspaceisreservedfor individualvirtualmachinegrowthbutmorevirtualmachinesfitonthedatastore.Clicktheentryto modifytheovercommitlevelforeachdatastore. TheMinRecommended,Storageat50%provision,andStorageat100%provisionvaluesare providedonlyasguidelines.Theactualrequirementsforthepoolvarybasedonclientusage patterns,applicationworkload,pooltype,andsoforth.

Ifyoudonothavesufficientspaceavailable,youmustaddfreespacebyselectinganadditionaldatastore. ViewConnectionServerasoftwareservicethatactsasabrokerforclientconnectionsbyauthenticating andthendirectingincomingremotedesktopuserrequeststotheappropriatevirtualdesktop,physical desktop,orterminalserver. ReplicaserversareadditionalViewConnectionServerinstancesthatprovidehighavailabilityandload balancing.Whenareplicaserverisinstalled,alocalLDAPinstanceisalsocreatedandtheViewLDAP dataonthereplicaserverisinitializedfromanexistingViewConnectionServer. Securityserverscanbeinstalledinthedemilitarizedzone(DMZ)toaddanadditionallayerofnetwork protection.Securityserversmakesurethatonlyauthenticateduserscanconnecttotheinternalnetwork fromexternallocationsbyprovidingasinglepointofaccess.

ViewAdministratoraWebapplicationthatallowsViewManageradministratorstoconfigureView ConnectionServer,deployandmanagedesktops,controluserauthentication,initiateandexamine systemevents,andcarryoutanalyticalactivities.
