The Print and Graphics Scholarship Foundation Program

The purpose of PGSF is to provide scholarships to qualified and interested
students who want to prepare for careers in the printing and graphic
communication industry.
The directors of PGSF take pleasure in announcing the annual national competition for over 200
scholarships to be awarded for professional and executive careers in the graphic communication
and printing industry.

Scholarship and College Application

The application for a Print and Graphics Scholarship Foundation scholarship is not the same as an application for admission to a
college or university. In order to ensure acceptance, the student must apply for admission to an approved college. The scholarship
applicant should request admission forms and inquire about admission requirements from several approved colleges. The applicant is
responsible for applying for admission on time and for fulfilling all admission requirements. A scholarship will be awarded only after
the applicant has been admitted to an approved college. Therefore, although a student may begin the application process with PGSF
before they have been admitted to a college or university, it is imperative to inform the PGSF office immediately upon admission to a
college or university.

Number of Scholarships
Over 200 nationally competitive scholarships are available. Also, several companies, foundations, and other donors in the graphic communication and printing industries may award additional competitive scholarships under the auspices of the PGSF. The individual
donors usually establish eligibility requirements for these scholarships.

Student Eligibility
To be eligible to compete for a scholarship award, the student must be:
1. Interested in a career in graphic communication and/or printing.
2. A high school senior or a high school graduate.
3. Preparing to engage or already engaged in a course of study at a two- or four-year college program.
4. A full-time student. Scholarships are not awarded for part-time study.
5. Able to maintain a 3.0 GPA (B average).

College Eligibility
In general, the scholarship awards are restricted to colleges and universities that offer established two- and four-year programs
leading to an associate or bachelors degree recognized by the graphic communication industry.

IMPORTANT!
All PGSF application materials must be POSTMARKED by the following dates:
MARCH 1 for High School Students
APRIL 1 for College Students
The application must be removed from this booklet and submitted with supporting materials
in an envelope that is at least 912 inches. Do not fold, staple, or damage any of the materials.

Applying for a Scholarship

Instructions and Guidelines
The total high school and/or college record is/are carefully considered as awards are based on the potential college success expected of
the candidates. The applicant must take several important steps to compete for PGSF Scholarships (failure to complete all of these steps
will result in an incomplete application that will not be reviewed by the PGSF Scholarship Selection Committee):

1. (FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS ONLY) Apply for and take the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) of the College Entrance Examination
Board. (PSAT/NMSQT and ACT scores are also acceptable.) Go to http://www.collegeboard.com/ for more information. Submit a copy
with the PGSF application.
Even if you have already taken these tests, you must submit a photocopy of the test scores.
If the test scores are included on your transcripts, you do not need to submit a separate copy.
2. Fill in the scholarship application ENTIRELY and mail it to the PGSF office postmarked by March 1 (high school) and April 1
(college students) of the current academic year.
3. Provide an official transcript, or a photocopy of an official transcript, of your grades. Unofficial transcripts will not be accepted. High
school students must submit a copy of their most current high school transcript, while college students must submit a complete copy of
their most current college transcript. A transcript request form is provided in this booklet for your convenience, if considered necessary.
4. Submit the two recommendation forms included in this booklet. A school representative, such as an instructor, counselor, or advisor,
should complete one form. Another school representative or an employer can complete the second form. You must submit at least
two letters of recommendation, but you may submit as many as you feel necessary. It is encouraged that the student submits letters
of recommendation with their application packet; however if the person who completes the form feels it necessary to send in the
recommendation form separately, he or she may do so.
5. You must submit a photocopy of the intended course of study from the college you plan on attending. College catalogs or departmental
brochures usually list the course requirements related to your major. If you are not sure of the college you will be attending when
you send your application to the PGSF office, you must send a course of study for all schools you have applied to and are seriously
considering.
6. All applicants are required to submit a #10 self-addressed stamped envelope with your application. This envelope will be used to notify
you of your final standing in the competition.
7. Mail all information (together if possible) to: Print and Graphics Scholarship Foundation
Attn: Bernie Eckert
200 Deer Run Road
Sewickley, PA 15143-2600

Please Note:
Please make every effort to mail all application materials in the same envelope. Due to the high volume of applications received,
items sent separately could be lost and result in an incomplete application. The Scholarship Selection Committee will not
review incomplete applications.
Please DO NOT send portfolios, disks, etc. With the large number of applications received, we are unable to review/return
any materials, other than that which is required. Portfolios, disks, etc. will be removed from the application and therefore
will not be reviewed by the Scholarship Selection Committee.
It is your responsibility to provide all of the items required to complete your application. Only complete applications will
be considered for scholarships from the Print and Graphics Scholarship Foundation. Any application that is incomplete
will be discarded.

Selection of Finalists
The Scholarship Selection Committee of PGSF is comprised of college educators and industry leaders experienced in interpreting
test scores, school records, and other pertinent information. The confidential file of every candidate who becomes a semifinalist
in the competition is carefully reviewed.
Scholarship candidates are judged on the basis of their academic records; recommendations offered from instructors, advisors,
and employers; biographical records, which indicate academic honors; extracurricular interests, etc.

Announcement of Winners
In July, a letter will notify scholarship winners. Each scholarship award becomes official when the winner returns a form that
confirms enrollment in an approved college and the students signature verifying acceptance of the scholarship.

Value of Awards
Scholarship awards vary in amount from $1,000 to $5,000 per academic year, in most cases, for up to four years. In addition, all
current recipients are given an honorary membership in the Printing Industries of America for the duration of their studies. Thus,
they receive the same benefits that other Educational Members receive, such as discounts on Printing Industries of America products. PGSF students may post their rsums on printworkers.com for those who are seeking internships, part-time, or full-time
employment.
The Scholarship Selection Committee of PGSF will determine the amount of each scholarship. The amount of the scholarship is
not made public. The award will be paid in a lump sum directly to the college financial aid office, in the students name. The college will be authorized to draw upon the grant for payment of tuition and other fees.

Scholarship Renewal
A scholarship is awarded for up to four years of college (unless otherwise specified) provided the scholarship recipient maintains
a high scholastic average and continues in an approved program of study. The students record is reviewed at the end of each
grading period and, if satisfactory, the award is extended for the following year. Students are required to maintain a cumulative
B (3.0) average. If a students grades fall below this cumulative average, the student will be put on academic probation and the
funds withheld until the grades are raised. If the student does not raise the grades during the same academic year, the student
loses the scholarship and must reapply.

Scholarships for Graduate Study

Some fellowship (graduate study) awards are available for college graduates who want to pursue advanced training in some
specialized areas that relate to the graphic communication/printing industry.
Deadline for applications for the Fellowship Program is February 15. Separate application forms are available by contacting the
PGSF office. Email pgsf@printing.org or phone: 412-259-1740

Protracted Illness
Serious protracted illness or injury that would delay a college career would be considered reason for holding an award on reserve.
Time limits and other restrictions are to be set by the Print and Graphics Scholarship Foundation. Other leaves of absence will be
considered individually.

Canadian Scholarships
Residents of Canada interested in pursuing further education for careers in graphic communication/printing should contact the
Canadian Printing Industry Association; 151 Rue Slater Street, Suite 1110; Ottawa, ON K1P 5H3.

Scholarship Application
DEADLINE FOR SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION IS MARCH 1 (High School) & APRIL 1 (College)
Please type or print clearly and fill in all boxes that apply.
