HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT ROLES

Human Resource Management Roles The Human Resources Department (HR), previously called the Personnel Department, has adopted the new name because they feel the best way to challenge their competitors is to utilize the members of the organization as a means to fulfill the companys goal. Attracting people who have the same aspirations to fill the various positions throughout the organization is the major function of the HR department (Gmez-Meja, Balkin, & Candy, 2010). In healthcare, the product produced by the organization is an intangible item which is the ability to show compassion towards others who may be ill, disabled, or wish to maintain their health. In order to do this, HR managers (HRM) need to find people who are knowledgeable in HR

their field and are just as excited and capable of showing their feelings (Staren, 2009).

managers must hire other managers to run the various departments of the hospital or the medical office. Once this task is complete, they need to decide on what positions are necessary, write the details of each position, decide what type of characteristics and levels of education should be required from prospective employees, and how much each employee should be compensated. Once this feat is accomplished, the HR department can start posting flyers and online advertisements to attract the type of people needed to fill these positions and keep them full. The salaries and benefits need to be comparative to other companies in the area in order to peak interests of potential candidates and maintain personnel once the desired number of employees has been obtained (Gmez-Meja, et al, 2009). Other roles of the HRM include establishing incentives for employees such as training programs, fair pay, and adequate work accommodations. Observations of employees in their

HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT ROLES roles are also necessary to determine what types of supplies and equipment need to be procured to enable the employees to properly care for their patients. The department managers should

perform an initial evaluation of each employee at the end of the probationary period and offer an additional hourly increase if the employee has met all requirements and follow up with annual evaluations and incentives, if not salaried (Staren, 2009). It is also a good idea to have an open line of communication on a regular basis than just the annual review. Department managers should have a good rapport with members of their teams and the HRM. Most members that make up the HR department like to be involved in achievements of all their employees and would provide every possible means of support in an adverse situation as well, as long as the lines of communications are open throughout the facility (Staren, 2009). The roles of the Human Resource Department are multi-faceted. They must first hire competent and well suited unit managers, decide together what positions are needed, create job descriptions, recruit possible candidates, and determine fair and competitive pay and incentive packages that will not only attract employees, but encourage them to stay. Communication throughout the facility is an essential tool to creating and running a successful business.
