MARKETING APPROACH
If you recall the great difculty that I was having with tractor
shopping, I fnally decided to adopt a totally new approach.
You see, if you look at the whole tractor issue from a marketing
perspective, it would go something like this. People dont simply
buy products (say a car), they are actually solving problems
(transportation) or satisfying needs (escape from the missus).
So if I look at the problem from this point of view ... I dont
need a tractor!!! What I really need is a snow removal solution, a
dirt digging solution and a dirt/gravel moving solution!!! Okay,
I think Im on the right track here. When solving a problem as
complex as this, it always helps to look around and fgure out
what assets you have to work with!!!
Lo and behold, one of my biggest assets is the ... WIFE!!!! A
couple of shovels and I have a snow removal solution!! A pointy
shovel and my dirt digging solution is solved!! Trow in a wheel
barrow and dirt/gravel moving is a breeze!!!
When you look at problems from the proper perspective the
solutions become obvious, I dont need a new tractor, I need a
new WIFE!! Now what specifcations do I need to look for??
Weight, height, temperament, fuel capacity, lifing ability, leg
strength, ............ Oh!!Oh!! Somehow shopping for a wife could
turn out to be a lot worse than shopping for a tractor!! And Im
kind of guessing that a tractor just might be cheaper.
Hey!! What if I shop for a tractor like I did for a wife!! Goof
around for a bunch of years enjoying life, wait for desperation to
set in, and take the frst one that I could fnd!!!!!!!!!
Hold on!! Tat really isnt funny and certainly not true. Well
alright ... I do fnd it funny but it still isnt true. I will probably
never fnd a tractor as good as my dear wife.
Actually, in tractor shopping, desperation did set in, snow was
coming, and I didnt have a
removal solution ready (the
missus threw the ofered
shovels much further than
I thought possible). But
thanks to the support of my
dear wife, we should now
be ready to face winter once

ROTHESAY-KINGS ROTARY NEWS
On the evening of October 15
th
members of
the Rothesay-Kings Rotary and their guests
gathered to enjoy and evening of fellowship
at their Fall Classic Dinner. Tis annual
event is one of the Clubs major fundraisers,
providing monies for such projects as local
breakfast programs, literacy initiatives and
international humanitarian relief. Honored at this years dinner
were Dr.Shaun Jennings, inspirational speaker and author of
Locked In, Locked Out and long time Rotarian, Stuart Urdang.
Both men were awarded the prestigious Paul Harris Fellowship
Award. Tis award is a unique recognition in Rotary. It is
given to honor those Rotarians or community members who
have demonstrated by their actions their dedication to service
to others and to world peace and understanding. Each PHF
recognition represents a gif of at least $1000US to the Rotary
Foundation to fund a part of their educational, ambassadorial
and humanitarian projects around the world.
Also, District #7810 of Rotary International is looking for team
members for a Group Study Exchange. Te exchange for the
up-coming year will be to the Northern Regions of Mexico and
travel dates will be from April 6
th
- May 5
th
2012. Applicants
must be professionals between the ages of 25- 40 who have the
desire to learn about other cultures and will represent our area
well internationally. Tis is a wonderful opportunity to travel
and immerse yourself in another culture as well as promote
your own region. It is a wonderful chance to network with other
people in similar vocations to your own and learn about how
your industry as it functions in another country.

SCHOOl SUPPlIES DRIVE UPDATE
Te Saint John Kiwanis Club has partnered with Staples Business
Depots for about 10 years expanding the program from one
location to three as Staples expanded. Tis has been a great
partnership resulting in thousands of dollars worth of school
supplies being distributed by the schools in the area to hundreds
of students-in-need.
Te management and staf of Staples 322 Rothesay would like
to thank their generous customers for their kind donations
during our Back to School drive this fall. We were able to give
$1271.51 to the Kiwanis Club to help out less fortunate children

GO GREEN WITH HOlIDAY ClEANUP
Te holiday season has arrived.
Celebrations and gifs will be at the
forefront of the festivities. Once all of the
gifs are torn open, there are bound to be
mounds of wrapping paper in each and
every home, which can mean damaging
waste for the environment. Wrapping
paper, boxes and ribbons tossed straight
into the garbage can mean that pounds
of added trash will end up in landflls across the country.
According to the Clean Air Council, an additional 5 million
tons of waste is generated during the holidays in the United
States. Four million tons of that waste is wrapping paper and
shopping bags. Tere are smarter solutions to dealing with
holiday clean-up.
Te frst step is choosing environmentally responsible
wrapping materials. Glossy, metallic or embellished wrapping
paper may not be easily recycled - or even recyclable at all.
Instead, look for wrapping paper that is made from recycled
materials and can, in turn, be recycled once more. Consider
wrapping gifs in plain, brown mailing paper and decorate the
outside with earth-friendly paints.
Next, nix the tissue paper inside of gif boxes. It doesnt really
serve a functional purpose, except for further delaying the
reveal of the gif inside. Tissue paper alone accounts for a lot of
extra trash. Skipping it means a person will be saving money
and the environment. Here are some other green cleanup tips:
-Designate a child or adult to gather the discarded wrapping
materials and sort the piles into trash. Ribbons and bows can
be reused, as can many gif boxes and bags.
-Shred paper items that are bound for the trash to reduce their
volume and require fewer trash bags for transport.
-Find out if a shipping store will take foam peanuts and air-
flled wraps to be recycled.
-Be sure to collect expired batteries and recycle them at a
facility that does so.
-Christmas trees can be taken down and sent for mulching.
Many communities collect trees afer the season is over for this
purpose.
Because there is bound to be some extra garbage during the
holidays, individuals can take steps to curb trash in other
aspects of their lives this time of the year. Some ideas include
using cloth napkins and actual dishes and cutlery instead
of disposable items. Before purchasing new gif paper, sort
through last years collection to see what items can be reused.
Cutting the front of of holiday cards and using them as gif
tags is another way to recycle. CH4

Christmas Potluck: Sunday, December 11

we always enjoy at this event. Tis is always
a popular event and a great chance to renew
friendships and prepare for the Christmas
Season. Well need volunteers to help set up and clean aferwards

News from the Riverbank: It looks like winter has arrived, with
a coating of slushy snow/ice on the lower stretches of Hammond
River. Tis will quickly end, with the mild weather in the forecast
for this weekend. Were seeing muskrats in front of the building,
dodging the foating slush. As a reminder, heres the link to

WINNER
Te Royal Conservatory congratulates Rothesay resident, Sarah
Han, who won a 2011 Gold Medal for scoring the top mark in
Atlantic Canada on the Grade 3 Piano examination. Her teacher

training Clarissa who lives at your zoo.

letter to Santa about their children and receive an email or letter
reply from Santa.
Children under 12 are admitted free to the Zoo this weekend

Te Saint John Community Christmas Exchange is a volunteer
non-proft, charitable organization operated by a Board of
15 Directors, made up of representatives from churches, the
Salvation Army, St. Vincent de Paul and interested individuals
from the Saint John and area communities.
Each November the Exchange Ofce develops and maintains
a new registration list for the churches and agencies in the Saint
John and surrounding area to alleviate duplicate sponsors. In
2010, over 6,600 names including adults, children and teens
were coordinated through the Christmas Exchange.
Individuals or groups wishing to assist a family or make a
donation for a Christmas dinner may do so by contacting

2011 KETTlE CAMPAIGN
Christmas - good times with family and
friends, gatherings with the best of food and
companionship and gifs to give and receive.
For many in our city quite the opposite is true.
Christmas can be a lonely, meager time of year
magnifed by the joy of others. Saint John endures
a poverty rate well above the national level. Tere
are those who struggle with mental illness or physical disabilities
and those whose situation is exacerbated by addiction. Some of
these individuals have little or no family support.
For over 125 years the Salvation Army has been a very real
presence here in Saint John caring for those most vulnerable in
our society. Tis time of year we are acutely aware of how many
charities ask for your donations but we challenge you to look
at our track record; the 2010 Kettle Campaign not only helped
almost 500 families have a wonderful Christmas, but assisted
over 6000 individuals throughout the year.
Te 2011 Kettle Campaign began on November 17

prevention and empowerment camps for youth

Join a Christmas Bird Count: For 112 years, people across
North America, and more recently around the world, have
been venturing in to the out-of-doors during the holiday period
to conduct annual Christmas Bird Counts. Tese citizen
scientists collect data to allow scientists to identify changes in
bird populations and distribution and to support conservation
initiatives.
Te Christmas Bird Counts also provide a great opportunity
for anyone with an interest in birds to team up with other
observers for a fun day of birding. Many of the counts in the
southern part of the province are co-ordinated by the Saint John
Naturalists Club and you are invited to join us for one or more
of these counts (listed below). As the counts are done in teams,
no experience is necessary. Indeed, it is a fun and relaxed way
to learn more about our winter resident birds. You can also be
part of the Christmas Bird Count for your area by recording the
birds coming to your back yard feeder. Your observations will be
added to those of the feld teams.

Over 100 people attended the Ys Peace Medal Breakfast that was
recently held at the Lily Lake Pavilion in honour of the Peace
Award recipients. Scott Crawford was presented with the Peace
Medal. His service to the community is very evident in his work
with the Old North End where he has demonstrated a belief that
by investing on our youth, communities can overcome obstacles
such as crime and poverty.
Hannah Daltrop, a student at St. Malachys High School, was
presented with the Youth Peacemaker Award for her eforts in

KV BAllROOM DANCERS
KV Ballroom Dancers are ofering Ballroom and Latin dance
classes (for couples) at all levels starting in January. Level 1
Beginner classes will be held in the QPlex every Tuesday evening
for eight weeks from January 10
th
- February 28
th
. Students who
take those Level 1 Beginner classes will then have the option of
continuing with another set of 8 Level 2 Beginner classes from
March 6
th
- April 24
th
. Classes at all other levels will be held in
the Quispamsis Civic Center on two Saturdays per month from
January through April.
In the beginner classes, students start learning both Latin and
Ballroom dances such as: cha cha, foxtrot, jive, rumba, and
merengue. Students who take classes beyond the beginner level
continue to refne and develop those dances but also learn other
dances such as slow waltz, quickstep, samba, mambo, tango,
Viennese waltz, slow foxtrot, etc.
Our group has been active in the KV area for over 10 years
and we currently have 65 couples, at all levels, taking classes. In
addition to classes, we ofer loads of fun at our monthly dances
and two gala balls every year. We also ofer lots of opportunity
to get help with and polish your steps at our weekly practice/
individual-help sessions.

R.C.R. CHIlDRENS EDUCATION FUND
During the last several years (locally about three years)
fundraising has been on-going in support of the Royal Canadian
Regiments Children of Fallen Soldiers Education Fund which
would beneft the children of Canadian soldiers who have died
in current confict. Te following is an update on the status of
the education fund as of November 1011.
Due to the generous donations and hard eforts of dedicated
people the Education Fund for the Children of Fallen Soldiers
has almost reached the point where the cost of education for
these children is covered. When this point is reached any
additional funds will be used for the children of returning
soldiers with physical or other problems.
Altogether close to $40,000 has been raised. Tis was achieved
through dances, concerts, car shows and would not have been
possible without the help of our sponsors.

Recently employees of Lockerbie and Hole construction at
the PCA mine site in Sussex held a 50//50 with half of the
funds raised to be donated to a local charity. Money in the
amount of $1,270 was presented to the RCR (Royal Canadian

Most children ask for a pet at some point in their lives very ofen
a puppy, and very ofen at Christmas. Tey plead with Mom and

at humane societies, SPCAs and rescue groups just waiting to be
adopted into their forever homes. Youll fnd puppies, adolescents,

be able to tell you a bit about a dogs temperament such as if the
dog is good with children, gets along with cats, is full of energy
or prefers to relax all day. All of this information is invaluable in
helping you make the right decision.
If you really want to buy from a breeder, you must do your
homework to make sure you dont unknowingly support a puppy
mill or backyard breeder. A puppy mill is a breeding operation
where dogs are mistreated and kept in horrendous conditions.
Such places thrive on people making impulse and uninformed

caring, ethical breeders from disreputable and downright cruel

As the pages of the calendar fip and we move
closer to the holiday season, pet owners
should be aware of common but hidden
dangers to their pets as we transform our
homes for the celebrations to come.

make a home feel more festive, they can be
tantalizing traps for pets. Pet owners should
keep decorations and ornaments higher up
on trees so they are not consumed by pets.
If a pet decides the colorful garland or tree
trim might make a tasty snack, they can
and will get stuck in your pets intestines,
necessitating immediate surgical removal.
Moreover, exposed cords from electric
lights can cause electrocution or oral burns if chewed.

wrapped, take care that your pet isnt in the room as you spread
out all the wrapping paper, bows and ribbons. If a cat should
starting gnawing on the ribbon, it will literally stitch the cats

RARElY SEEN IN NB
I thought your readers might enjoy seeing a few pictures of a
rarely seen New Brunswick animal. Back in September I was
fortunate to have seen a Fisher in the woods directly behind my
home here in Quispamsis. I was standing still when I caught
some movement and all of a sudden a Fisher popped over
a little knoll just ten meters away. I was very surprised and
equally surprised as to the size of this animal. With its long tail
it would have been three feet long. As a result of this encounter
I purchased a trail camera and set it up in the woods along with
some bait.
For those readers who do not know what a trail camera is,
it is a motion activated ditgital camera set to take pictures of
animals as they move in front of the camera. Over the next
couple of weeks I captured numerous pictures of raccoons and
even a coyote but it took several weeks before I got pictures of
the Fisher. I now have hundreds of pictures as the Fisher got
used to my free meals..
Tey are pretty common in the Province trappers can catch
them legally and there is no limit, they are just rarely seen. Te
odd part is that its living in Quispam they usually prefer old
growth remote forests. Teir favorite food is porcupine one
of the few animals that can prey on them because they know
how to kill them and the quills dont cause them grief. Are your
neighbors missing any cats or small dogs? Tey like squirrels
and mice too but will take anything smaller than they are.

DRIVING ON WINTER TIRES SAVES lIVES
Research conducted by Te Government
of Quebec in the two years since winter
tire use became universal in that province
has proven conclusively what tire makers
have long known: driving on winter tires
saves lives and reduces serious injuries.
Te 2011 study, which compared Quebec
road accident statistics before and afer winter tire use became
required, shows that in the past two winters there has been a
fve per cent reduction in road-accident injuries that can be
directly attributed to winter tire use. Te research concludes
that winter tires prevent about 575 road-accident injuries per
winter in Quebec. Te study also found that vehicle accidents
resulting in death or serious injury declined by three per cent.
Tis fall tire makers are urging Canadian drivers to carefully
consider whether winter tires are right for them and to make
an educated choice. To help motorists make the right decision
for their driving patterns, the industry is ofering drivers a
wealth of information about the performance advantages of
winter tires at its website, betiresmart.ca.
What motorists may not know is that todays high-tech winter
tires ofer far more than better traction on snow, ice or slush
covered roadways. Te rubber compounds used in todays
sophisticated winter tires deliver better grip in all cold weather
driving conditions including dry pavement because these
compounds maintain their elasticity even at temperatures
below minus 30 degrees Celsius. Te result is a dramatic
improvement in driver control and traction in all winter
driving conditions, particularly when cornering or braking.
Drivers who choose to roll on winter tires will notice the
diference in traction when the temperature falls below seven
degrees Celsius, or as soon as they can see their breath.
Traditionally, many drivers, particularly those who live in
cities or towns where the streets are cleared regularly, have
opted for all-season tires to avoid the bi-annual tire changeover.
All-season tires can provide safe all-weather performance, but
winter tires deliver up to 50 per cent more winter traction.
When buying winter tires, motorists should look for the
mountain snowfake symbol on the sidewall. Tires with
this symbol meet or exceed tire industry snow traction
requirements.
Proper tire maintenance and infation are also important
contributors to safe winter driving.
Motorists should remember that excessive tread wear can
diminish traction and, as a result, tread depth should always be
checked at the start of the winter driving season. Drivers who
are unsure if their tires are overly worn should consult their
tire retailer to determine if they should be replaced.
Proper tire infation is another winter driving essential. Tires
that are under-or-over infated have a smaller footprint on the
road surface, which lessens their grip. Te result is reduced
stopping and handling capabilities and wasted fuel.
Tire infation pressure can drop quickly during cold snaps.
Every fve degrees Celsius change results in about one psi
change in pressure, so a temperature drop of 15 degrees Celsius
would result in 10 per cent or three psi under-infation. During
winter, tire makers recommend measuring tire infation
frequently using a reliable tire gauge to ensure tires are properly
infated to the vehicle manufacturers recommendation.

JOY
I came across an old photo recently of my daughter at age six,
dancing in the pouring rain in October in a bathing suit. I had
not seen the photo in many years (at least in part because my
other daughter had liberated it from the photo album for a
project a couple of years ago) but I remember the day so clearly I
did not need to. It was an unseasonably warm October day that
simply poured rain. Te girls put on their bathing suits and went
out on the bricks in the back yard in water up to their ankles
and danced and sang. Te photo has captured that expression
of pure joy that no doubt was what so imprinted the day in my
memory.
As adults, we are so much more controlled than as kids. I think
we have learned to reign in our delight for fear of sounding or
appearing childish or foolish. Fear of what others will think of us
can suck all of the joy out of life. It can be tough to step outside of
our comfort zone and experiment a little. For some of us it gets
tougher and tougher with each passing year, and for some others
of us once we reach a certain age suddenly we can let go of that
concern of what others think and do something just because we
want to (the Red Hat Society being a prime example). Start small
. . . a new hair colour (you can always change it tomorrow if you
really hate it), an outft you would normally consider too bright
(buy it second hand and
you wont have too much
invested in it), an activity
you have never tried (zip
lining - are you nuts!).
Te best way to live
life joyfully is to savor
today. Enjoy whatever it
is you are doing. Enjoy
the people around you.
Childlike is not childish.
