A hand auger, sometimes called a handheld auger, is a tool, often made of steel, that is used to bore a

hole. Typically, handaugers are used to create holes in dirt, ice, or wood, though a hand auger may be
used to create holes in other materials as well. The use of the word hand in the term, restricts this type of
tool to one that can be used by hand and is powered by human force.

There are many different types of augers. There are mechanical and motor-driven augers. Perhaps the
most common mechanical auger is that which is used to create the holes that a post for a fence or gate is
inserted into. These are also known as hole diggers or clamshell diggers. Motorized augers, which aren't
usually considered to be a type of hand auger, can be standalone tools, or they can be attachments used
in conjunction with handheld drills that are powered by electricity. Aplumber's hand auger, also known as
a plumber's snake, is slightly different than most augers as it is used to unclog pipes by pushing the
blockage through; but these hand augers are also handheld and powered by the user.
The part of the hand auger that does the actual boring is shaped much like the an Archimedes' screw.
The outside looks like a loosely thread screw, and the center shaft may or may not be hollow. The
traditional woodworking hand auger is this sort of screw-styled auger that typically does not have the
hollow shaft. The tool is screwed into the material, and as the tool is unscrewed the material is removed
and a hole is formed.
A hand auger is not the right tool in all applications, however. When digging a hole to insert a post, for
example, especially in soils with a high clay content, a clamshell digger, or hole digger, is usually
preferred. This types of auger typically has two long, curved metallic panels opposite eachother that are
thrust into the material. The augers' handles are then pulled towards eachother and the tool is removed
from the material, leaving a hole behind. A small hand auger, however, may be more effective when
planting bulbs, as it is easy to control both the diameter and depth of the hole. Augers are also used to
gather soil samples to test the pH of the soil.
Hand and mechanical augers vary greatly in size, purpose and therefore, price. The makeup of the steel
is one driving force in the price, with high-alloy carbon steel blades typically costing more.
ce hand augers typically make a hole with a diameter between 5 inches (12.5 cm) to 8 inches (about 20
cm). An adjustable hand auger allows the user to adjust the handles. Garden augers typically are 3 or 4
inches (7.6 to about 10 cm), although it should be noted mechanical augers are much larger and
appropriate for tilling or other heavy garden work.
Augers can rust and become dull with time and use. Proper maintenance is necessary to maintain the
tools integrity. The tool should be cleaned after each use. Oiling the metal components can also help the
longevity of the tool. Also, the sharp rim of the auger would benefit from an occasional rub with a
whetstone or hone to keep the working edge sharp.

An auger is a spiral shaped tool that moves materials or liquids from one area to another. When an auger
is rotated, the materials or liquids move along the spiral to the desired location. A drill bit, which is the
most commonly known auger, uses the design to remove the shavings and other debris from the hole
while it is being drilled.

Augers have, however, been in use since ancient times. The first auger is said to have been invented
sometime in the 200's BC by Archimedes. This first design was called a water-screw, which was used to
transfer water from lower levels to higher levels. Today, water pumps are usually used to serve the same
purpose, though the Archimedes Screw is still occasionally used.
Modern day uses of the auger design can be found in snowblowers, which move snow with an auger
toward an impeller and then throw it into a discharge chute. Another example of a modern auger design is
the Zamboni, which utilizes an auger to remove loose ice particles from the top of the ice on skating
rinks in order to create a smooth surface. Plumbers also use a specialized flexible auger in order to
remove objects from pipes. Combines, which use both an auger enclosed in a tube and one that is not
enclosed, move unthreshed crops into a threshing mechanism in order to move the grain in and out of the
hopper.
Another agricultural use of the auger design is put into place with the grain auger. The grain auger is used
to move grain from grain carts and trucks into special storage bins. The grain auger can be powered
through the power take-off of a tractor, with an electric motor, or with an internal combustion engine.
The spinning auger causes the grain to move upward through a long metal tube as the hopper receives
the grain from the cart or truck. A chute at the top of the enclosed auger helps glide the grain into the
storage bin.

O The Hand Auger

The and Auger is the piece of equipment that I favor for basic
ground level deck construction, basically it's like a giant cork screw -
so the wide "T" bar at the top is there so that you can push down
and round to screw the blades into the ground - breaking up the soil
just in the area you need to.
and Augers have been around nearly since the beginning of time -
you may have seen a hand auger being used in the old movie
"Western Union" - do you know that in those days they managed to
connect about 6 miles a day - just look at telegraph poles still
standing and imagine how many holes they had to dig and how
deep! - so it's going to be real easy digging a few holes in your
garden...
Because it doesn't have a motor there's no vibrations with the hand
auger to send you off course - and I find that this makes it easier to
keep in line and gives me more precise results.
It's easy to use - easy to control and is a great tool to use if you are new or experienced in
deck construction. The only danger with this tool is if you lend it out - like mine - and don't
see it for a while!.

Hand auger equipment is extremely suitable for soil

research.
As almost any type of soil sets its own demands
where it concerns the model of the auger to be
applied.
n the course of the years many models have been
developed. Years of experience and many contacts
with soil researchers at home and abroad made it
possible to achieve the optimum design for various
types.
By applying extension rods with a bayonet- or a
conical threaded connection augering to greater
depths is possible. With hand auger equipment
a depth of 8-10 meter can realistically be achieved.
The maximum boring depth strongly depends on
various factors such as: depth of the groundwater,
the soil profile, the characteristics of the material
the auger has to pass through.
As with any tool or equipment, hand auger
equipment too has to meet certain requirements.
The most important requirements are:
The equipment should be efficient, i.e. it
should be such that, depending on the type of
soil research and the requirements the
research should meet, this research can be
executed as fast and accurate as possible.
The equipment should be solid and strong.
As in general little manpower is available for
soil research in the field, and sometimes long
distances have to be covered carrying the
equipment, it is an important condition that
the equipment should be light and easy to
handle.
The augers have been made of a high grade
non-toxic steel and a carefully selected hardening
treatment contributes to achieve a wear
resistant and solid design.

HAND AUGER TECHNIQUE
An auger has a cutting end (bit) which advances the device through the subsurIace as
it is turned. A disturbed sediment sample is collected (typically halI a Ioot or less in
length) and liIted within the auger to the surIace.
Shown below is a hand auger with a section oI rod attached and a padded handle Ior
easy turning. More sections oI rod can be attached Ior deeper augering.

The auger bit:

!ROS:
O light-weight inexpensive equipment
O easy to carry into Iield site
CONS:
O disturbed sample
O limit to depth oI hand augering due to operator strength, borehole collapse or
encountering water table (collapse oI saturated sediments into borehole)
Machine-Driven Auger Drilling
Gasoline-powered augers can be rented but typically have a limit oI less than 10 It drilling depth.

The standard technique Ior environmental drilling is hollow-stem auger drilling. Similar to hand
augering, you can add numerous sections or Ilights oI augers (typically 5 It long each) to reach a
range oI depths. In hollow-stem augering, once the sampling depth is attained, the inside rods
and plug are removed - leaving the outer augers holding the borehole open and the undisturbed
sediments below the borehole available Ior sampling.

In addition to sampling through the hollow-stem auger, cuttings are brought to the
surIace by the spiral Iluted edges on the outside oI the auger Ilights. These disturbed
auger cuttings should be assessed and logged although the exact depth oI their
occurrence is unknown.

Auger Cuttings !ros:
O no extra eIIort during drilling process
Auger Cuttings Cons:
O disturbed sample
O iI using drilling Iluids (mud rotary drilling technique), material mixes with
drilling Iluids and other sediments on the way up the augers
O cannot tell speciIic depth oI sediment occurrence - could be at bottom oI auger
or anywhere above
