Tag-Team Packing
Tag-Team Packing

This is our standard mountain trekking gear for a 3-5 day trek. Mine comes up to about 12 kg minus water and camera gear. Zuras is 9 kg and I only allow her to carry one 1.5 L Bottle of water. I wanted to record this so as to have a visual reference for every time I have to pack for an expedition Question by Lei: What are my options[[[[? A few years ago, three to be exact, I went on a hike with my current BF, who was then just a friend. We went into deep woods, camped a night, and continued into deeper woods.(we live in Montana). We came across a abandoned looking house, with a large dog who looked to be some kind of GSD, chained to the porch. She had about a foot of loose chain, and was close to strangling if she moved at all. She viciously barked at us, but her throat was croaking because of the far-too-tight collar. She had food and water, but it was about 6 inches out of her reach. She looked extremely famished, as if she hadnt eaten for a week or more. I was a bit frightened by such a large dog, but Titus calmly approached her, and she quickly shrank away as far as her leash would allow her, which gave me the impression she had been beaten. He unfastened her leash, and we both realized she was extremely weak and couldnt be aggressive at all. So we loosened her collar and slipped it off, then tried to get her to drink some of the water. She drank and ate, and we sat there with her for close to an hour just petting her matted fur. She was sunburned, clearly, on her nose lips and ears, and she was obviously dying of dehydration in the 80* weather. We used a long rope to tie her up to a nearby tree, in the shade, and ran back to get our first aid kit. We had aloe vera and applied some of it, and we brought a sleeping bag, which we used to hoist her onto and carry her back to the camp. We place her in the tent, which was shaded and cool, with fresh water and some sandwhich meat. We closed it and went back to the cabin to see if there was someone there, which we assumed there was considering the water in her bowl was relatively fresh. What we discovered, though, were a litter of five puppies hiding under the porch, looking to be about famished and ill. We quickly gathered them all in my jacket, and carried them back. They seemed to be 5-6 weeks old, and i dont have any idea how they stayed alive, but

they were all severely dehydrated, sunburned, and starving. The hike from our jeep to where we were currently camped took about 7-8 hours, and we knew there was no way we could carry this 50lb dog all that way. So Titus went back, jogging most of the way, and made it back to the camp(on a motorcycle)by sunset. He had brought a small wagon type attachment and we loaded the dam and her pups into it, covered them with a blanket, and brought them back. It took a lot of vet work, and about three months of therapy for the puppies, but they were soon ready to leave. I found homes for them and then began to work more with the mom, whostomach full of foodweighed more like 75-80lbs. She turned out to be a wonderful dog and my ex-stepdad, an amazing guy, adopted her. I still get emailed updates occasionally. HOWEVER!!! Three years later, I receive a call from one of the people I adopted a pup to. She said that the dog has several health issues, shes close to 120lbs, she has a terrible temperament, is scared of everything, and I lied about everything. She said that either I take the dog back, or she shoots her. !??!?!?! I think something has happened to this woman, because I swear when I adopted this pup to her she was stable. I checked her vet refs, i visited her home twice, and I saw her interact with the puppy several times. I didnt write up a contract, stupid I guess, but the Sadie as she calls her is spayed, UtD on shots a nd, dewormed. I live in an apt. WHile its large, we already have two cats a parrot and a GIANT giant schnauzer. Right now I really cant accept another dog, especially one with as many problems and who needs as much care as Sadie apparently does. I could submit her to a rescue, I could ask a friend to take her, or I could attempt to do it myself. What is my best option?? ALSO Im going to do whatever I do no questions asked to this lady, as she is threatening to shoot the dog and i dont want ot upset her. Best answer: Answer by ladystang take it to a local shelter. The plan for the C&O Canal/Potomac River Adventure August 2009!

Image by dionhinchcliffe Hi all, This adventure trip has suddenly come together at the very last minute but its going to be a blast. Seth and William Goller (8 and 10), and myself and hopefully some of you are going to do a short but extremely fun overnight bike ride this weekend along the C&O Canal/Potomac. *** ALL OF YOU ARE INVITED TO WALK OR RIDE EITHER SOME OR ALL OF IT *** The C&O is literally one of the best maintained and longest bike trails in the world and now goes for 300 miles from downtown DC to up north continuously to Pittsburgh due to the recent completion of the Great Allegheny Passage project . The first half is entirely along the water (the Potomac). Were just going to do a short segment this weekend starting at Mile 100 and ride along the water back to Purcellville (actually, a good bit before before it), until about Mile 72 or so. Attached is a complete map of what were going to do and at which trail camps were likely to stay. The whole ride is dotted with small towns, restaurants, and there are nice campgrounds every 5 miles along the trail the whole way. While biking is the way to go (its gravel but road bikes work fine), you also have the option of hiking since were not going to go

that far because of the heat. We might have to wait out a summer shower or two under a tree as well (those who come must not mind getting a little wet and dirty, but its mostly very comfortable!). Tomorrow evenings ride is only 10 miles, Saturday is only 15 miles and both are highly walkeable. The whole trip is just over 25 miles from Friday evening to Sunday morning. We will only be biking a couple/three hours a day and making lots of site seeing stops. Cell service is available the whole way, though its not 3G. You can see what a typical bike camping campsite looks like here from a trip I did late last season , its super fun with the latest high-tech conveniences (including coffee maker and solar shower.) We take everything we need including all food, water filter (there are pumps along the trail), tents, sleeping mats, sleeping bags, music, speakers, batteries, trash bags, solar panels, fire starters, snacks, and just about anything else you can think of (including sunblock, GPS, first aid bag kids, complete spare parts, tools, and tubes for the bikes, cooking gear for 6 people, 3 lanterns, and much more.) We even have comfortable chairs. All of this fits on my bike trailer (show in picture in link above), but you will also have to carry a personal backpack with your effects (change of clothes and sleeping bag/blankets, toothbrush, comb, toilet paper, liquor, wine, any medication, etc.) We have extras of many things so let me or Kate know. The plan for a typical day is to ride a bit, explore, enjoy nature, eat lunch in a town, find a good campsite, collect firewood, set up, slow cook food, listen to music, read, play, and watching stars (Im bringing a really good star map). Im bringing lots of gadgets/toys for the kids too. YOU CAN JOIN US TOMORROW OR ANY TIME DURING SATURDAY, JUST CALL ME AT 202-538-0059 FRIENDS IF YOU LIKE. If you just want to come along virtually, were going to be posting pictures and video live on flickr.com/photos/dionhinchcliffe during the whole ride, you can check in us remotely throughout the weekend. *Where:* Meet at Williamsport, MD (see map) tomorrow evening as early as possible (or at any access point along the trail on Saturday, call first) SO WE CAN SET A RENDEZVOUS POINT. INVITE YOUR

*How Long:* 2 days, pick up is Sunday late morning/early afternoon. *Trail Details:* Mile-by-Mile Guide Hope to see some of you, its going to be a blast! Best, Dion Question by Ann M: HELP!!! RUCKSACK IS TOO HEAVY!!!? hi!!! PLEASE ANSWER!!!! right, tomorrow i am going on a 3 day hike 7 hours each day i am a small 15 year old and my bag weighs 14kg!!!!! My in-laws camping stove turns the bottom of all my pots and pans BLACK and its difficult to wash off the soot. Is it my fuel or the stove? Im planning to borrow my own parents smaller Coleman stove instead but if its my Ozarks Trail propane thats doing it I guess it wont make a difference! Anyone know? Thanks! Best answer: Answer by killbasabill Propane tends to make soot when burned too slowly. If there is an adjustment for the venturi( air flow) turn it to limit the air coming in to make the fuel burn more efficiently. Also if you want to make it easier to wash the soot off of your pots, you can coat the bottoms of the pots with soap before cooking. Add your own answer in the comments!

Question by MRCOOL: Is pet smart good for socializing my 8 month German Shepherd puppy? So basically when my dog was a younger puppy I could only find small dogs to play with him but he met sooooo many of my friends and family, short and tall he met them all. But a week and half of bad weather kept us inside he started to get scared of tall people but was still okay with small children and friends that were average height but then another two weeks later he started to bark in a low tone but not lunging or growling, nothing to show signs of aggression. He is trained to the point where hell track with his nose, sit, stay to a certain point, lay down, speak on command and shake paws. Hes very friendly to friends cautious of big people as was demonstrated at pet smart where he started barking at everyone. But when a small dog passed by he was waggin his tail and wanted to play. When I signed up for training the trainer told me he just needed to get used to many situations and even suggested to join her facebook page called (paws on the shore) where he would meet many other dogs and situations on a hike. So Im wondering does it seem

like a good training plan for my scaredy cat shepherd. If not please tell me of better training place near york region or Toronto, that you have experienced. Thank You. Best answer: Answer by King Les The Lofty The socialisation period ended when Pup became 13 weeks old, although if well started before that it can continue through 16 weeks old. Although everyone calls it socialisation, that is actually a bad term, deluding people such as yourself into thinking it means playing with people & pups. A more accurate term would be exposure or familiarisation. The purpose is to (once Pup trusts you) expose it from a distance PUP considers safe to every movement, reflection, scent, sight, sound, texture to be found in its environment. It should be done on a 6ft/2m lead where there are NO dogs running loose, with Pup allowed to try to explore in all directions at once except when you need to haul it away from dangerous or disgusting things, or from a scared human. And if Pup wants to sit & think about a new thing, or to hide behind you, you should let it, patiently waiting still & silent until Pup decides to ignore or investigate this new thing, whereupon you praise it and, if it is still close enough, give it a rub or pat of encouragement.
