Classroom Procedures 1. Transitioning When students are transitioning within the classroom, I will have specific procedures. If students are on the rug and need to go back to their desk, I will make sure students are sitting cris-cross, voices off, hands in their lap. Then those who look ready, I will dismiss back to their seat. I might use different grouping such as, those with summer birthdays may go back to their seat. This will ensure that the entire class isnt rushing back to their desk at the same time. Before students are dismissed back to their desk, I will make sure students are given instructions as to what they are supposed to do when they sit down. For example, when you get to your desk, please take out a pencil and your math book. Similarly, if students are moving from desk to rug, I will reinforce expectations by asking students to silently move to the rug, walking, sit cris-cross with hands in their lap. I will specify if students need to sit in a circle, or facing the board. If my class is doing an activity for one subject, I will be sure to set a timer for how long we will work. When the timer goes off, students will know it is time to transition to a different subjects. I will then give instructions for what students are to do with their work, such as put it in their desk or in the completed work tray, or incomplete work tray. I will also let them know when they will be able to finish their work so they do not get anxious about not having finished. I will then tell students what they need to take out for the next activity. Setting a timer lets students know how much time they have and the transition will not be a surprise. 2. Entering the Classroom In the morning, depending on the schools morning arrival procedures I will greet students at the door of the class. Students will put their coat and backpack away in their cubby. They will take

their homework folder and planner out of their backpack. Their homework will go in the completed work tray, and their folder and planner will go in their file. This procedure will be introduced and modeled at the beginning of the year so students know exactly what to do when they enter the classroom everyday. Students will also know that seat work will be waiting for them at their desk. Students will individually work on their activity until morning announcements. If students are entering the classroom after lunch or specials, the first student in the line will wait at the door. I will tell students what they should do when they enter the classroom, such as go to their desk and take out their reading notebook. 3. Dismissal Before dismissal, students will be called from their desk to go to the file folder to get out their homework folder, papers that need to go home, and planner. Students will go back to their desk and write their homework in their planner, and put papers and homework in their folder. The homework will be written on the board. Every student needs to have their planner signed by me. I will stand at the front of the classroom. Students will line up to have their planner signed. Then, they may go to their cubby to get their coat and backpack. After everything is packed up, students put their chairs on their desk and line up at the door. Students being picked up go to the front of the line. Bus riders in back. When everyone is quiet, car riders go down to where they are picked up. Bus riders line up in the hallway with the other 3rd graders. There will be stickers with bus numbers on the wall. Students are to line up at their bus number. I will have a list of who rides what bus. Once everyone is accounted for, students will be brought out to the buses which have their number in the window. 4. Using the Bathroom There will be two group bathroom breaks throughout the day. Before specials, we will stop at the bathroom. Students line up outside the door and go in groups of four. When they come out, they line up on the opposite wall in their number order. Students are to stand with arms crossed, voices off,

one square away from the wall. This process will be repeated after lunch as well. If students need to use the bathroom during class, they must ask me first. They may not ask during a lesson, but if they are working on an activity. I will be fair with who is let to go to the bathroom, but I will take into consideration if I think a student might be abusing this right. If a child asks right after we already went, or has a history of using it as an excuse to get out of class, they will not be allowed to go. 5. If students finish their work early, they should put their work in the completed work tray, and then finish any previously unfinished work. If they have everything done, they can silently read. Depending on the activity, I might have extra practice that students can do when they finish their first assignment. Students should stay in their desk and not disturb others who are still working. 6. Students are to follow the procedures put in place by the school during a fire alarm or weather alerts. Students will be expected to quietly line up in their number order. I will then bring them to the designated place of safety. Students will be reminded to stay quiet and calm, and that there is no reason to panic. We will practice this procedure in so when an alarm goes off, everyone will know what to do. 7. Participating in Class Students will be expected to raise their hand every time they want to share something with the entire class. I will remind students by saying things such as, who can raise their hand and tell me what they think will happen next? Students who blurt out answers will be reminded to raise their hand, and those who do follow expectations will be pointed out and thanked. If students seem to not be paying attention, I might call on them to bring them back to the discussion. If a student regularly is not participating, I will talk to this student individually. I will try to find out if there is a behavior or attitude issue, or if they feel uncomfortable speaking with the class. If they are shy, I may tell the

student that I am going to call on them beforehand so they are not put on the spot. 8. Turning in Homework Students turn homework into the homework tray when the arrive at school. This way, everything is in one place, and nothing gets lost. If homework is not completed, students put their homework in the incomplete tray. I will sort the homework and check off who turned in their work. If students repeatedly dont do their homework I will have a talk with them and their parents. Some students may have time during the day to finish their work, or may have to stay in at lunch to finish. 9. Reporting an Issue With a Classmate I will have a zero tolerance policy for bullying. If there is a serious issue between students, I want to know about it. Yet, this does not mean that I want a classroom with constant tattle-tailing, and where students cannot work our their own problems. I will tell my students that if there is a problem, they are encouraged to work it out on their own. If the problem cannot be resolved, then students need to tell me, in private, what happened. I want my students to know that I will always be there to help them with a situation. I want a positive, comfortable learning environment. This cannot happen if there is tension between students. I will teach them about taking responsibility for their actions, and how they are expected to treat everyone with respect and kindness. 10. Asking Questions Students in my class will be encouraged to ask questions if they do not understand a concept or activity. I want my students to feel comfortable enough where they are not embarrassed if they do not know something. Yet, I am aware that some students ask questions without thinking or trying to find out the answer. I will explain to students that before they ask a question they need to make sure they have read directions, looked around the room, and asked their neighbor. I do not want to be asked how to spell a word that is hanging on the word wall. There will be multiple resources in my class for spelling, and other directions. If a student cannot answer the question on their own, they can raise their

hand and I will assist them.

Rules and Consequences: Be respectful of the class and yourself Be responsible for your actions Follow directions On the rug: Criss-cross, hands in lap, voices off, eyes on me. In the hall: Line number order, voices off, safe hands(crossed), one square away from wall

Consequences: If students need more than one reminder in the hall or on the rug about talking, they will stay in for recess. This is also true if students are not responsible for their actions and decide not to do their work during the given time. Students will be expected to finish their work during lunch if their time was not spent responsibly. If there is a major behavior issue, such as an issue between two students or ongoing disruption, parents will be notified. Depending on severity, students may have to call or write a note their explaining their behavior. If students disrupt the class and take time out of learning, students will write an apology to the class. If students follow rules the entire day, they receive an attitude point for the day. At the end of the quarter the students receive a paycheck with their points that they can use towards buying small toys/school supplies.
