ALTERCHITECTURE: AN IDEAS COMPETITION ON ARCHITECTURAL INNOVATION COMPETITION OBJECTIVES: Speculate


Involve architecture students more in the process of problem-seeking by allowing them free reign to identify core issues inherent between building typologies and the Filipino contemporary way of living to come up with future-forward solutions to the built-environment.

Break
Redefine the contemporary by rethinking norms and exploring possibilities in architecture.

Innovate
Provide utmost freedom to generate the most innovative architectural solutions grounded on Filipino culture, tropical context, sustainability and technology. Call for a change in designing the built environment by way of shifting our thought processes.

ALTERCHITECTURE 2011: BUSINESS PROCESS OUTSOURCING

PROBLEM Over the past few years, as the world has become more and more reliant on the advancement of electronics and telecommunication, the contact center has proven itself to be an invariable element of the Philippines range of occupations as an asset to business as well as a source of job opportunities. The passage of time however, has also brought with it new and urgent requisites for urban design in order to satisfy social risings such as the green movement and digital revolution. In lieu of this, we need to change our ways to keep up. We need to start thinking fresh. We need to innovate. CHALLENGE Design the most radically-thought call center. Forget your notions of a conventional one. Reconfigure its architecture from its internal workings to its envelope. It should be an architectural manifesto of an altered living environment that is more sustainable and more

responsive to our climate, culture and society. The scope of the design should accommodate the needs of the targeted audience, in this case, those who belong to the middle and high strata. Essentially, it has to be fresh, revolutionary and Filipino. Ultimately, it shall generate ideas, insights and innovations on how we can restructure our built-environment and our way of living. SITE A relatively-flat, 100m x 50m parcel of land as shown below:

ELIGIBILITY - The competition is only open to all currently-enrolled, undergraduate architecture students in the Philippines. Fresh graduates this previous semester AY 2010-2011 are also allowed to join. - Only members of the Organizing Committee from the United Architects of the Philippines Student Auxiliary UP-Diliman (UAPSA-UPD) Chapter are banned from entering the competition. - Teams are only limited up to three members. - Individual entries are permitted. REGISTRATION - Participants may submit multiple entries, but each entry shall be individually registered. - All participants must register by DECEMBER 9, 2011 - The registration fee is P 500.00 per entry submitted (non-refundable). - Registration form shall be sent through email at alterchitecture2011@gmail.com or personally hand over to the Organizing Committee (contact Katrina Tan for meet ups in Metro Manila) - After the online registration, UAPSA-UPD will give the REGISTRATION NUMBER and ENTRY FORM (short description of project) via email to the contact person. SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS - Aside from the project title, no identifying marks like names, logos or other information that reveal the identity of the designer/s and their respective architecture school shall be included in the boards. - Each submission shall include: Concept statement of the design entry that (maximum of 1000 words) Architectural plan/s, sections, elevations, exterior and interior perspectives Other materials you deem necessary to effectively communicate your design intent like diagrams, photos and others. - Submissions shall only be on print and mounted on a maximum of five 20x30 boards3 (preferably foam board, otherwise the board should not be flimsy) in landscape format. - A sealed short brown envelope shall be submitted with the boards. It must include an accomplished copy of the Entry Form available at (http://www.wix.com/alterchitecture2011/officialwebsite), and a CD containing a softcopy of the boards in .jpeg format, 300 dpi in resolution. - The registration number must be placed at the rear of the board (upper-left corner) and outside the sealed brown envelope. (plain side, upper-left corner). - For Metro Manila participants, personal receipt at the UP-D College of Architecture is opted. - Failure to comply with the competition rules and requirements may mean disqualification. - Verification of entries will be done by the Organizing Committee prior to the presentation of eligible ones to the jurors. - Clarifications will be made through email for ineligible entries regarding non-compliance and deficiencies. - Qualification of ineligible entries will be subject to the decision of the Competition Secretariat after clarification. JUDGING - The jury will remain anonymous until the deadline of submission of entries. - The identities of the participants shall remain anonymous to the judges during the judging period. - The submitted entries shall be rated based on the following: Innovation 40% How well the design introduced fresh concepts and solutions in terms of: Building Program (20%) Spatial Organization (20%) Sustainability 30% How the design effectively provides green and sustainable features apt for the Philippine tropical setting. Aesthetics 20%

Presentation 20% How well the design was visually-communicated.
