AT91SAM9263
ARM926EJ-S Based Processor
with LCD Controller
If you are looking for a high
performance device with the ability
to drive large LCD screens and still
having enough processing power
left to do your application, the
AT91SAM9263 is the right device
for you
This device is based on a high
power ARM926EJ-S core It gives
a high level of performance due to
16 Kbytes of data cache, 16 Kbytes
of instruction cache, a 5 stage
pipeline, DSP instructions and
java acceleration thru Jazelle
technology
The AT91SAM9263 offers 220 Mips
@ 200 MHz One of the key features
of this device is its LCD controller,
supporting STN and TFT panels
with up to 24 bits color depth and
2048 x 2048 pixels
To make this device suitable for
electronic equipment with LCD
screens some additional features
like a 2D DMA controller for
management of virtual frame
buffer and a 2D graphics controller
offering line draw, block transfer,
polygon fll and clipping are
included
The biggest issue managing a
screen is the memory bandwidth,
many devices are penalized by
the inner architecture in which all
the available performance is
used for image handling In the
case of the AT91SAM9263, the
architecture has been designed
in order to maximize the memory
bandwidth
The microcontroller integrates a
nine 32-bit layer matrix, allowing
a total of 288 Gbps of on-chip bus
bandwidth, 80 Kbytes of internal
SRAM single cycle access at

ALM-2812
Dual-Band 2.4-2.5 GHz & 4.9-6 GHz
WLAN Low-Noise Amplifer
As the 2.4 GHz ISM band gets
more crowded every day, WLAN
technology developers are
looking for other frequencies to
serve the WLAN community. The
next ISM band, where WLAN
will work properly, is 5.8 GHz.
As it is important that WLAN
technology manufacturers maintain
compatibility with existing 2.4 GHz
WLAN hardware, dual band
equipment will be developed.
ALM-2812 is a dual-band LNA
designed for WLAN applications in
the 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz frequency
ranges.
The LNA uses Avago Technologies
proprietary GaAs Enhancement-
mode pHEMT process to achieve
high-frequency wideband operation
with very low noise fgures.
The ALM-2812 has two individual
LNAs housed in a 3 mm x 3 mm
package, each one switchable using
a single CMOS-compatible pin. All
matching components are inside
the module. Only one external
low frequency bypass capacitor
is required for proper operation,
making it suitable for use in ultra-
miniature WLAN cards and access
points.

ASMT-Mxxx Moonstone
3 W White LED with Diffusing Layer
and 1 W Cold and Warm White LED
Based on a ubiquitous package
with excellent heat transfer
characteristics, the Moonstone
family from Avago Technologies
gets extended with new members
on a regular basis
The ASMT-MWE0-NMN00
is a derivative of the ASMT-
MW20-NLN00, a powerful and
effcient 3 W white LED providing
130 lm at 700 mA It differs from
its predecessor by the addition of a
diffusing layer that provides much
better color homogeneity This is
particularly noticeable when the
LED is used in conjunction with
highly focusing optics In this case,
most of the white LEDs exhibit a
color fringe effect with a bluish
center surrounded by a yellowish
ring This unwanted effect is
eliminated using a diffusing layer in
the ASMT-MWE0
The ASMT-MW09-NLL00 (cold
white) and ASMT-MY00-NJK00
(warm white) 1 W Moonstone
are now available in increased
light output versions The
ASMT-MW09 will typically provide
80 lm at 350 mA while, on the
same conditions, its warm white
counterpart will provide 50 lm
A warm white 1 W Moonstone
LED with a typical light output
of 65 lm (ASMT-MY09) is under
development
Fine Color Temperature binnings
are available from 400010000 K
for the cold white version and from
26004000 K for the warm white
color version Both of them provide
a high Color Rendering Index

Moonstone High-Power LED Modules
LED-based lighting is now
technically and commercially
attractive for many applications
and Avago Technologies continues
to strengthen its position with
the extension of its Moonstone
high-power LED family These
LEDs are available in cold white
(ASMT-MW00), warm white
(ASMT-MY00), green (ASMT-MG00)
and blue (ASMT-MB00) the
AlInGaP colors (red, red-orange
and amber) are in the process
of being released to the market
Samples and smaller quantities are
now available Mass production for
AlInGaP Moonstone will be up and
running in March 2008
The advantages of Moonstones
industry-standard power-transistor
package (TO-220) are: very low
profle, low thermal resistance
(R
th J-P
= 8 K/W), built-in Zener diode
for ESD protection (up to 16 kV)
and the fange around the silicon
chip which protects the silicon
from being touchable and enables
the use of Avagos click-on lenses
Additionally, the power-transistor
package enables designers to use
the same package and layout for
different Moonstone LEDs ranging
from 053 W The Moonstone
is compliant with standard SMT
soldering processes and is rated at
moisture sensitivity level (MSL) 2a,
which means 4 weeks of shelf life
without the need to re-bake the LED
It is recommended to use the
diffused Moonstone if the design
requires additional lenses (see also
page 17, ASMT-Mxxxx article)
For lighting applications designers
often have the need for LED modules
where driving the LEDs is made
easy and thermal management is
taken care of, therefore Avago is
now also offering LED modules
based on 2nd Generation

Avagos power LED-modules come
in different PCB shapes; disks,
rings and strips These modules
offer improved lifetime robustness
and reliability compared to the
conventional light sources The
LEDs are pre-mounted on metal-
core PCBs, making thermal
management very easy The wide
radiation pattern of the light strip
makes them an ideal light source
to illuminate a wide area These
light strips are available with and
without on-board resistors and can
be directly connected to a voltage

ScrollWheel Add-On Board
For ChameleonARM, DBC2C20
and COBRA5329
The ScrollWheel board is based
on Avagos AMRX-1500 ultra-
slim ScrollWheel with 5-way
switch, which is made with
Avago Technologies refective
optical technology The board
can be plugged directly onto the
EBV reference design boards
ChameleonARM (with NXP LPC2378
ARM7TDMI MCU) and COBRA5329
(with Freescale MCF5329 ColdFire
V3 MCU) For direct connection to
the DBC2C20 (with Altera Cyclone II
FPGA) a special adapter is needed
(EBV order code: DBE-ADAP DEV)
The ScrollWheel board can be
used for all applications requiring
a user interface and not only in
combination with EBV reference
designs
The motion sensor within the
AMRX-1500 is contactless and
ensures reliable operation Four
directional switches placed
underneath the ScrollWheel
provide a four-way navigation
input, while the center button
functions as a select or OK key,
which, for example, can be used to
make a selection from a menu or a
list Together with the rotary motion
signal, which typically is used for
changing confguration values and
fast scrolling through menu items
and selection lists, the ScrollWheel
offers a complete central user input
interface for many applications For
simple integration in an existing
system, the encoder signal from
the ScrollWheel is decoded by a
small 8-bit microcontroller directly
on the ScrollWheel board Together
with the button events, all signals
are sent out via the UART interface
to the corresponding pins on the
COBRA connectors Alternatively,
the Scroll Wheel board can be
equipped with a standard SUB-D
connector to control other boards
or applications This connector is
included and the board can also be
powered from an integrated
DC socket Together with the
ScrollWheel board, EBV delivers a
modifed demo application for the
ChameleonARM and COBRA5329
to easily test its input capabilities
The UART communication protocol
is fully specifed to make it as easy
as possible to use the ScrollWheel
board for your own application
Design documents are also
available
To make the ScrollWheel board
more fexible for any application,
it is possible to confgure its
orientation, resolution, number
of events per keystroke and
the character case sent out via
the UART These parameters
are automatically stored in the
microcontrollers fash, so following
a power-down the ScrollWheel
board will start up with the same
confguration as before

FGH30N60LSD
Low V
CE(SAT)
(1.1 V), 30 A, 600 V IGBT
Some topologies have switches
which are switched at a very low
frequency, for example 50 Hz
or 100 Hz These switches are
used for topology switching, for
example changing between buck
and boost operating mode, for
50 Hz switched output bridges and
for inrush current limitation For
these applications either IGBTs or
MOSFETs are used
Most IGBTs are optimized to
function for medium switching
speeds, in the range of
1020 kHz Some are optimized
for faster switching resulting
in increased V
CE(SAT)
The
FGH30N60LSD is optimized the
other way round: very low V
CE(SAT)
with the penalty of having a higher
switching energy
The lowest R
DS(ON)
600 V MOSFET on
the market has an R
DS(ON)
of 40 m
typical at room temperature With
30 A fowing through the device,
V
DS(ON)
would be 12 V Bearing in
mind that R
DS(ON)
approximately
doubles its value if the temperature
increases to T
J
= 125 C, V
DS(ON)
would be already 12 V at 15 A
current and 24 V at 30 A For fast
switching, the switching losses in
a MOSFET will be far lower than in
the FGH30N60LSD
However, for 50 Hz or one-off
switching, as seen in topology
switching, 50 Hz output bridges
and inrush current limiting, the
FGH30N60LSD has far lower losses

FSFR2100
Fairchild Power Switch (FPS) for
Half-Bridge Resonant Converter
The FSFR-series is a complete
integrated circuit with controller,
high/low side drivers and two
MOSFETs LLC resonant converters
are used in power supplies
from 100 W1 kW They have
an effciency of more than 90%
They work best with a narrow
input voltage range, for example
195265 V
AC
, or alternatively with
a front end power factor correction
(PFC) stage Standard series
resonant converters have excellent
full load effciency, but suffer
from reduced effciency at lighter
loads as the switching frequency
increases greatly Series resonant
converters use one inductor (L) and
one capacitor (C) LLC converters
use a second, uncoupled inductor
to reduce the dependency of the
switching frequency on the load
They are therefore highly effcient
at a wide range of loads
The FSFR family, is using Zero
Voltage Switching (ZVS), which
results in very low EMI and very
high effciency The diodes in the
MOSFETs have fast recovery times
allowing small deadbands in the
switching cycles and therefore
improving effciency even more
In addition to the LLC resonant
converter, the FSFR family can
be applied to series resonant
converters and parallel resonant
converters
Application note AN-4151 can
be used to calculate the power
levels at different input and output
voltages This application note
contains detailed formulas and
very easy descriptions, resulting in
good and reliable designs Winding

Green FPS Power Switch for Valley
Switching Converters
Small AC input power supplies with
maximum output power ranging
from 190 W are extensively
used in industrial and consumer
applications Such power supplies
generally use integrated power
switches, these are devices that
combine the PWM controller and
the MOSFET into one package The
most popular topologies used are
fyback, for multiple output and/
or isolated applications and buck
for non-isolated single output
applications
Energy saving initiatives are forcing
designers to improve the effciency
of the power supplies over a wide
range of operating conditions
Though using simple valley
switching is improving effciency at
full load, it causes worse effciency
at lower loads, because switching
frequency is increasing The
FSQ-series of Green FPS Valley
Switching Converters contain
integrated power switches where
the controller sections have been
specially designed for valley
switching topologies
They limit the maximum switching
frequency while still switching on
the minima in the drain waveform
An additional resulting beneft is
that they generate lower conducted
and radiated EMI than ordinary
hard-switched converters with
fxed switching frequencies
The PWM controllers have under-
voltage lockouts, optimized gate
drivers, internal soft-start and LEB
(leading edge blanking) The LEB
function avoids noise in the current
sense internal measurement Self-
protection circuitries are built-in
This series reduces the total
cost, component count, size and
weight; in addition it increases
the effciency of the converters
Fairchilds European Global Power
Resource Center has issued test
reports for 25 W, 12 V isolated
fyback, 25 W, 12 V buck and
15 W, 15 V buck for designs built

Dual 2 A, High-Speed, Low-Side
Gate Drivers
Todays high power applications
need high peak currents (up to 24 A)
to switch MOSFETs effciently In
controller or PWM applications
drivers are needed They have
specialized output stages, which
can remove signifcant power
dissipation from control ICs and
can help alleviate noise problems
They should be placed close to the
MOSFET to minimize the high-
current loop area and reduce noise
in sensitive control-chip areas
Moreover, drivers can provide
features not readily available in
PWM chips such as input level
shifting and timing delays
Drivers use less board space
than discrete solutions allowing
for higher density designs The
integrated features can reduce your
bill of material
Higher reliability, less test time, fast
switching (lower losses) from a slow
driving signal, direct translation
from TTL logic inputs to higher

are additional benefts that
you can obtain of using MOSFET
drivers Notable differentiating
features of the new FAN322x series
of drivers include CMOS inputs to

DevCom 03
High Performance ZigBee-Ready
Wireless Module
Based on the new Flexis series
of microcontrollers and the low
power radio IC from Freescale,
the DevCom 03 module is a
ready-to-use building block that
can be mounted directly in any
end equipment needing ZigBee,
802154 or proprietary wireless
data transfer at 24 GHz Compared
to the low-cost ZigBee module,
DevCom 02 (see MIP 2007/1), the
DevCom 03 adds a low-noise
amplifer and a power amplifer,
extending the transmission range
signifcantly Additionally, larger
memory is available to enable
the use of the latest ZigBee stack
in router and PAN-coordinator
applications The extended
transmission range makes it
possible to build large ZigBee
networks using fewer nodes than
when just using the low-cost
DevCom 02 Typically, the sensor
and actuator nodes would be built
from low-cost nodes, while the
router would utilise the DevCom 03
modules In this way, the distance
between end node and router as
well as from router to router can
be made signifcantly longer, thus
saving nodes and jumps To
build a complete ZigBee solution,
the module is supported by the
Freescale BeeKit development
package A utility supplied by
Develco will create the DevCom 03
as a hardware profle in the BeeKit
environment, making frmware
customization very easy

MB96F356
High-Performance 16-Bit Flash MCU
MB96F356 series is based on Fujitsus
advanced 16FX architecture (16-bit
architecture with instruction pipeline
for RISC-like performance) The CPU
uses the same instruction set as
the established 16LX series thus
allowing for easy migration of 16LX
software to the new 16FX products
The new 16FX family is signifcantly
improved in performance even
at the same operation frequency
power consumption has been
reduced and the start-up time has
been decreased
For highest processing speed at
optimized power consumption
an internal PLL can be selected to
supply the CPU with up to 56 MHz
operation frequency from an
external 4 MHz resonator The
result is a minimum instruction
cycle time of 178 ns together with
an excellent EMI behavior
An on-chip clock modulation circuit
signifcantly reduces emission
peaks in the frequency spectrum
The emitted power is minimised by
the on-chip voltage regulator that
reduces the internal CPU voltage A
fexible clock tree allows selecting
different operating frequencies for
the peripheral independent of the
CPU speed

MB86277 MINT
Fujitsus Latest Low-End Graphics
Controller
MB86277 Mint is a new extension
to the Fujitsu Graphic Display
Controller family for embedded
graphic applications Binary
compatible to the Coral and Lime
devices, Mint is designed to target
low-end 2D-applications in the
automotive and industrial market
segments
MB86277 operates internally at
100 MHz (generated by an on-chip
PLL) and has a 32-bit MCU host
interface and a 32/64-bit memory
interface to address up to 64 Mbyte
of external SDRAM
The video input unit is capable of
accepting TV tuner, DVD player
or camera signals in ITU656
format Video data is frstly
stored in graphics memory and
then displayed on the screen in
synchronization with the display
scan Both NTSC and PAL video
formats are supported Video
pictures of diverse resolution and
frame frequency rate, in either
progressive or interlaced mode,
can be grabbed, scaled down and
displayed picture-in-picture
Functions supported by MINT:
Using the alpha map, the video
picture can be blended smoothly
together with rendered graphics
The alpha map can be freely
assigned to any of the six layers
and allows the assignment of
8 bits per pixel, enabling each
pixel to be mixed to control
transparency to a much more
defned degree In addition, all
layers can be blended at a fxed
ratio of 256 levels To enhance BLT
(Bit Block Transfers) operations,
this feature can now be combined
with alpha-mapping With this
function, any bitmap can be
copied from any source location
(CPU memory or video memory)
onto a layer with an independent
alpha map Software routines
making use of this function can
greatly improve image quality
(for example anti-aliasing over
a moving background) Alpha
blending blends two image colors
to provide a transparent effect
MINT supports two types of
blending; blending two different
colors at drawing and blending
overlay planes at display
Transparent color is not used for
these blending options Texture
mapping is provided to map any
image pattern onto the plane The
texture pattern can be laid out in
the graphics memory In this case,
max 4096 x 4096 pixels can be
used
MINT operates in little-endian
mode All register address
descriptions in the specifcations
are byte addresses in little endian

SAx-XC88x
Field Oriented Control with XC88x
Field Oriented Control (FOC) is
increasingly being used in consumer
and industrial motor control
applications leading to higher
effciency, better dynamic response
and lower torque ripple Typically
a 16/32-bit MCU/DSP is required to
handle the complex trigonometric
equations Infneons XC886/888
offers the full benefts of FOC at a
fraction of the cost compared to
DSP/DSC solutions This is achieved
by a high performance 16-bit vector
computer called CORDIC and an
MDU, both are fully programmable
co-processors for key functions like
vector rotation and transformations
used for Park transform or
normalizing and scaling The
XC886/888 CLM enhances the
XC800 8-bit MCU family with a
new member providing advanced
networking capabilities by
integrating both a CAN controller
(V20B active) and LIN support on a
single chip

ISL3159E
40 Mbps, 5 V PROFIBUS
RS485/422 Transceiver
Intersils ISL3159E is a high speed
RS-485/RS-422 transceiver with
several protection features
It is IEC61000 compliant with
15 kV ESD protection on the
RS-485 I/O-pins and class 3 HBM
ESD level >9 kV on all other pins
The receiver has a full fail-safe type
protection It is protected against
open, shorted and terminated but
undriven data lines
The device also supports hot
plugging; a special circuitry
ensures that the Tx and Rx outputs
remain in a high impedance state
while the power supply stabilizes
The driver (Tx) outputs are short
circuit protected, even for voltages
exceeding the power supply
voltage Additionally, an on-chip
thermal shutdown circuitry disables
the Tx outputs to prevent damage
if the power dissipation becomes
excessive The driver outputs also
have a current limiter
This transceiver requires a 5 V
10% tolerance supply and delivers
at least a 21 V differential output
voltage over the supply range
This translates into better noise
immunity (data integrity), longer
reach, or the ability to drive up to
six 120 terminations in star or
other non-standard bus topologies,
at an exceptional 40 Mbps data rate
SCSI applications beneft from
the ISL3159s low receiver and
transmitter part-to-part skews,
which make it perfect for high
speed parallel applications where
large numbers of bits must be
simultaneously captured The low
bit-to-bit skew eases the timing
constraints on the data latching
signal
The Rx outputs feature high drive
levels (typically >30 mA @ V
OL
= 1 V)
to ease the design of optically
isolated interfaces
Beside industry standard packages,
the device is also available in a
very small QFN-package which
measures only 3 by 3 mm

LM34917
Ultra High Density High Voltage
Switching Regulator
The LM34917 is a member of the
new family of buck switching
regulators, LM3491x The
regulators operation is based on
a hysteretic control scheme using
an on-time control which varies
inversely with V
IN
This feature
allows the operating frequency to
remain relatively constant over load
and input voltage variations The
hysteretic control requires no loop
compensation resulting in very fast
load transient response
The voltage input range of the
LM34917 is 833 V with transient
capability up to 50 V, and the output
current can be up to 125 A The
internal frequency of the LM34917
is up to 20 MHz
Therefore the size of the conductor
can be reduced For an output of

Family of PowerWise
Synchronous
Buck Regulators
This new family of synchronous
buck regulators is suitable for a
wide range of applications The
family features two input voltage
ranges, 3055 V and 4536 V
respectively The different available
load currents (25 A) allow
implementing most requirements
of point of load applications The
table shows the available devices
and their differences All of them
feature a precision enable pin, a
soft-start/track pin and a power
good pin The switching frequencies
are ranging from 500 kHz to
15 MHz, either factory set or
adjustable with a single resistor
All devices utilize an externally
compensated peak current mode
control loop which only needs two
external omponents The internal
precision voltage reference with
an accuracy of 15% enables an
excellent line and load regulation
over the full junction temperature
range of -40+125 C
The frequency of the internal
oscillator can be infuenced in
several ways The SYNC pin allows
synchronizing the device to an
external frequency ranging from
500 kHz15 MHz The SYNCOUT
pin is used to connect one other
device via the SYNC pin Two
LM20k devices can work with 180
phaseshift into the same load,
greatly saving cost and size of the
input capacitors Among the listed
features, one of the more important
ones is the precision current
limit: For example LM20144, a 4 A
version with selectable frequency,
has a current limit of
6 A 10%, guaranteed over the full
temperature range This allows the
user to tightly specify the inductor
to a maximum of 66 A, which
signifcantly saves size and cost
compared to devices that only give
a typical limit at 25 C
The design of power supplies will
be supported with the simulation
tool WEBENCH, additionally design
spreadsheets are available for
download These can be used to
calculate the circuit and to generate
Bode plots Finally for all devices
evaluation boards are available on
request

LM4562 and LME497x0
High Performance Single, Dual and
Quad Audio Operational Amplifers
While everything in the audio
domain tends to migrate to the
digital world, there are still lots
of audio applications that need
decent analog amplifcation, eg,
the signal conditioning done
in front end analog to digital
converters and the digital to
analog stages after the digital
signal processing Audio purists
know, how important this stage
is For those applications National
Semiconductor developed these
high performance amplifers All
combining very low distortion
and high slew rate to easily
satisfy the most demanding audio
applications To ensure that the
most challenging loads are driven
without compromise, the family
has an output current capability of
26 mA and an output stage that
drives 2 k loads to within 1 V of
either power supply voltage and
to within 14 V when driving 600
loads Even when driving complex
loads with values as high as 100 pF
the amplifers still achieve
outstanding AC performance
A common mode rejection ratio
(CMMR) and power supply rejection
ratio (PSSR), both of 120 dB,
give the amplifers excellent DC
performance LME49740 and
LM4562 have a low voltage
noise density of 27 nV/Hz with
LME49710 even lower at 25 nV/Hz

KMA200
Programmable Angle Sensor System
The angle sensor KMA200 (picture 1)
uses the magnetoresistive effect
(MR) to evaluate the direction of a
magnetic feld The resistance of
the material (Permalloy) depends on
the angle between the current and
the magnetisation direction If the
sensor is operating in its saturation
feld strength then the measured
values are independent from effects
like magnetic drift during life time,
magnetic drift with temperature,
mechanical tolerances and
mechanical shifts caused by thermal
stress Picture 2 shows a typical
system to measure the shaft angle
The KMA200 consist of the MR
sensor element itself which uses two
Wheatstone bridges and the signal
processing unit as shown in picture 3
The signals from the sensors are frst
converted into digital values and then
the controller calculates the angle
values These angles can be read
out as analog signals at two pins or
alternatively as digital values (13 bits)
using the serial interface (SPI) The
serial interface is also used for device
confguration Any position can be
set as zero position The angle range
can be limited by programming
the lowest and the highest values
during setup All settings are stored
in an internal E

NCP1351
Variable Off-Time, Current Mode
Controller
The NCP1351 is a current mode
controller targeting low power off-
line fyback Switched Mode Power
Supplies (SMPS) where cost is of
utmost importance Based on a
fxed peak current technique (quasi
fxed T
ON
), the controller decreases
the switching frequency as the
load becomes lighter As a result,
a power supply using the NCP1351
naturally offers excellent no load
power consumption An adjustable
timer permanently monitors the
feedback activity and protects the
supply in presence of a short circuit
or an overload Once the timer
elapses, NCP1351 stops switching
and stays latched for versions A/C
and tries to restart for versions
B/D The dual level over-current
protection on versions C/D allows
the design of power supplies that
will transiently supply a higher
power output than allowed in
steady-state operation The internal
structure features an optimized
arrangement which allows one
of the lowest available startup
currents, a fundamental parameter
when designing low standby power
supplies The negative current
sensing technique minimizes the
impact of the switching noise
on the controller operation and
offers the user selecting the
maximum peak voltage across the
current sense resistor The power
dissipation can thus be application
optimized Finally, the bulk input
ripple ensures a natural frequency
smearing which smoothes the EMI
signature

orientation sensor featured in an
extremely small SMT package
It can be used in any application
where vertical or horizontal tilt
angles need to be detected and
defned
The optical detection of orientation
is possible by measuring the
gravity dependant position of a

SFH5711
High Accuracy Ambient Light Sensor
Ambient light sensors are used
wherever the settings of a system
such as backlighting of mobile
devices or instrument panels in
cars need to be adjusted to ambient
light conditions as perceived
by humans OSRAM Opto
Semiconductors new Ambient
Light Sensor SFH 5711 detects
brightness in exactly the same way
as the human eye To achieve this,
the sensor needs to have a spectral
sensitivity which is similar to the
human eye Even small changes in
light can be detected accurately
This allows for light adjustment
in tiny steps (nearly continuous
dimming), so that devices
controlled by the SFH 5711
are always visible Designed for
a wide range of applications, it
can be used in situations where
systems and equipment need to
adjust to ambient light conditions
as perceived by the human eye
The SFH 5711 is the latest addition
to OSRAM Opto Semiconductors
Ambient Light Sensor product
line and has a logarithmic output
ensuring maximum precision over
the complete range of brightness
levels from darkness to sunshine

S30ML-P Family
Small-Page ORNAND Flash Family
The S30ML-P family consists
of single-voltage fash memory
products manufactured using 90 nm
MirrorBit
technology These
fash devices feature a Static Page
Register This allows program
and read data to be transferred
between the static page register
and the memory cell array in
whole-page increments The
erase operation is implemented
in block increments This makes
these serial-type memory devices
very well suited for shadowing
applications where the contents of
the fash memory is copied straight
into RAM for execution Due to
the block-transfer construction
these devices are however not
recommended for applications
where code is executed directly out
of the fash memory

STM32 is a new member of
STs 32-bit family based on the
breakthrough ARM
CORTEX-M3
core This core is specifcally
developed for embedded
applications requiring a
combination of high-performance,
real-time, low-power and low-cost
operation
It eases migration from the
16-bit world due to its high
level of integration, its easy-to-
use architecture, its low power
capabilities and cost-effectiveness
High performance does not mean
high power consumption ST has
taken special care to address three
main energy requirements driven
by the market:
1 High dynamic power effciency in
running mode
2 Extremely low power when the
application is in standby
3 Low voltage capability for direct
battery operation
In run mode, executing from Flash
at full 72 MHz CPU speed, the
STM32 has a current consumption
of about 27 mA
The STM32 is split into two
branches; Access Line and
Performance Line, depending
on performance and peripherals
required by your application
The ARM CORTEX-M3, a 32-bit
RISC processor, is targeted to
fulfll the needs of the low cost
microcontroller market and general
applications This core is based
on the ARMv7 architecture which
integrates important parameters:

VNI4140K
Quad High-Side Driver
The VNI4140K is a monolithic
device based on VIPower
technology This device is able to
drive four independent loads with
one side connected to ground
These loads may be resistive or
inductive In case of a load short-
circuit the active current limitation
avoids drops in the system power
supply Built-in thermal shut-
down protects the device from
overtemperature and short-circuit
conditions When an overload
occurs, the channel turns off and
back on automatically in order to
prevent over temperature damage
If the fault condition persists, the
overloaded channel is turned off
and will restart only when case
temperature has decreased down
to a certain level While the fault
persists, the non overloaded
channels continue to operate
normally The overtemperature
conditions are indicated on
diagnostic pins in order to let an
external controller monitor and
intervene with driving the loads

ISO7240
Quad Digital Isolators with 1, 25
and 150 Mbps
The ISO7240 is a quad channel
digital isolator with output enable
function This device has logic input
and output buffers separated by
TIs silicon dioxide (SiO
2
) isolation
barrier Used in conjunction with
isolated power supplies this
device blocks high voltages,
isolates grounds, and prevents
noise currents from entering the
local ground and interfering with
or damaging sensitive circuitry
By disabling the device using the
enable function it is possible to
drive the output into 3-state level
The ISO7240 has all four channels
in the same direction ISO7241
and ISO7242 are planned to come
out soon The ISO7241 has three
channels in the same direction
and one in the opposite direction
and ISO7242 has two channels in
each direction All devices will be
available with a data rate of 1, 25 or
150 Mbps
The 1 Mbps and 25 Mbps option
devices have TTL input thresholds
and a noise-flter at the input that
prevents transient pulses from
being passed to the output of the
device The devices offering
150 Mbps have CMOS V
CC
/2 input
thresholds and do not have the
input noise-flter or the additional
propagation delay
To ensure a proper DC level on the
output, a periodic update pulse is
sent across the isolation barrier If
this refresh pulse is not received the
input is assumed to be unpowered
or not being actively driven The
failsafe circuit then drives the
output to a logic high level
By introducing this family of digital
isolators, Texas Instruments offers
a very good component to replace
traditional optocouplers

TB6582FG
Single-Chip Sensorless Sine Wave
ASSP for BLDC Motors
The TB6582FG from Toshiba
is the industrys frst single-
chip sensorless motor control
application specifc standard
product (ASSP) offering a full sine
wave PWM motor drive output. The
new device will signifcantly reduce
the complexity and component
count when controlling brushless
DC (BLDC) motors.
Unlike MCU-based alternatives,
the new device is a cost optimized
state machine which does not
require programming. Specifcally,
the TB6582FG takes the analog
speed inputs supplied by a host
microcontroller and provides a
complete full sine wave PWM
drive output without additional
processing. Control of motor
rotation speed in both forward
and reverse direction is achieved
by changing the PWM duty cycle,
based on the input from the host
microcontroller.
The sinusoidal motor coil current
waveform provides smoother BLDC
motor operation and lower electrical
and acoustical noise than possible
with conventional PWM outputs
while still allowing designers to
realize the beneft of PWM effciency.
The TB6582FG not only reduces
component count, but also
improves application reliability.
This device is ideal for applications
where additional sensors are
unpractical or commercially
unattractive.
