MANAGEMEMT REPORT
Prism Bangladesh started its partnership in development arena in 1990 with the initiation of an action research project on innovative Duckweed based integrated production system targeting the rural poor. It was a humble beginning at Mirzapur Kumudinin Hospital Complex where the Duckweed technologies like integrated Aquaculture and Duckweed based wastewater systems were successfully tested out and models developed for replication. We gratefully acknowledge and deeply appreciate the partnership and contribution of KWT in this noble venture. The devastating cyclone of 1991 in the coastal areas of Bangladesh propelled Prism to participate in a large scale Relief and rehabilitation program in the five worst affected thanas of Cox's Bazaar, Noakhali and Lakshmipur Districts. The beneficiaries mobilized during the relief and rehabilitation phase in these thanas convinced us of a long term development needs for their area. The Relief and Rehabilitation program evolved into a long term Socio-economic development program and eventually development and inclusion of a Microfinance support services to the partner groups. Since then Prism program base was broadened to include Intensive Sanitation and water supply promotion, Integrated Aquaculture promotion, rural enterprise development, Community wastewater treatment, solid and hospital waste management, Micro credit operations and Disaster management etc. all in direct participation and partnership with the community. The organization grew to manage and support the ever-growing demands from the Field. Prism in spite of its efforts to control this organizational growth in check was forced to allow some reasonable expansion to effectively manage the programs at field level. The last three years especially has been a period of tribulation for the organization when resource Constraints and changing Socio political environment in the program areas forced PRISM to re-think its development program strategy. Prism program in future should concentrate and focus in the areas of sustainable environment management issues, Integrated rural Aquaculture promotion, Arsenic Mitigation and Rural Water Supply Development, Intensive Sanitation and Hygiene Promotion and Disaster Management program for the rural poor and the deprived. Furthermore, PRISM is convinced that to achieve long-term sustainable development of the poor enhanced rural production and enterprise development amongst the poor and small farmers are a must. Increasingly lessons are learnt that poor rural community can not be progressed without education time appropriate skills, adoption of efficient production methods, which are environment friendly. Shobuj Shona - Shibaloy and Khulna projects have enormous potential and with applied realistic action plan and improved management can potentially achieve similar success like Mirzapur Shobuj Shona project. On the brighter side Prism has been successful in developing programs in the sector of solid waste management, hospital waste management, Arsenic screening and mitigation and Disaster management coalition development. The Shobuj Shona Murgi Palan Karmashuchi project initiated at Mirzapur was brought to full scale and sustained operation achieved. But it facing huge problems to get back the investment as the market of eggs is fully controlled by the middleman and diseases are the cronical problem of the birds. The project demonstrates good potential for future development of contract grower's network with poor rural women in the surrounding villages and sustained technical support to the rural growers.
