Introduction

Installation

and Setup

The key to outstandingphotographic results is reproducibility. Vgry few, if any photograpn6rs would consider using a camera without first consufting an exposure meter and perhaps a color temperature meter. Co-nsistenciy in the entire photographic process demands a similar level of- control in the printing phase. The LABEX-wallner Digital Spot coloi Analyzer was designed to respond to the same need in the printing process that the color temperature meter serves in the mafing od lf,e negative or transparelcy. Calibration

I I I

The analysis of color negatives or transparencies and the selection of filter pack, (and exposure)r may be carried out either by reference to a color target, such as a grey cardr or by the method. A standard color target "diffusion" is the prefLrred method in professional photography. fn this method a nltandard" color target is included in each camera exposurer or in each series of_similar exposures, and this target supplies all of the necessary information to the analyzer for coLor balance (and exposure). r; most commercial photography the "standard" color target chosen is an 188 grey card. photography the nstandard" color rn portrait target chosen is often skin tone with allowance for individual col-or differences. In the "diffusion" method the entire image is diffused with the expectation that the color batance of the naveragen scene will be a neutral grey of some 'average" reflectance. fn general however, scenes frequently have a dominint color and some are bright while others are dark. we strongly reconmend the use of the color target method for color balance ina exposure determination. Following are step-by-step instructions for calibration papers for of color color balance using the standard color target and the diffusion method. Instructions for exposure caLibration may be found in your MC509MWsers Manual (if U used) and exposure calibration should be carried out in conjunction with color balance calibration. Color Tarqet Method

1. Select a well exposed color negative or transparency containing a standard color target such as an 1gt grey card. 2. By trial and error make the best possible g x 10 enlargement using fresh chemistry, paying special attention to following a STANDARD ROCEDURE. (Use P an exposure time of at least 10 seconds to minimize errors introduced by Iamp afterglow).

T
I I

3. rnstall a Plug-rn MemoryModule in the socket provided in the Color Analyzer. A separate MemoryModule rs required for each type of paper to be used. 4. Without altering enlargement ratio, f-stop or filter pack r turn off the safelights and turn on the (press the FOCUSbutton if enlarger, using the position MC50gMW Exposure t'leter-Timer ) . the measuring head on the projected image of the standard color target. Using both hands on the cosine-correcting measuring headr align it with the projected image such that the shadow of the ring is centered about the dark sensor aperture.
