Call to Action Speech Adam Behnke Feed My Starving Children

Purpose: To get the audience to donate to, volunteer at, or purchase any item from the organization Feed My Starving Children. Thesis: The impact and efficiency of Feed My Starving Children makes it deserving of your time and money. Attention Step: I. Here are some food related things I have done in 5 seconds: stuffed a 230 calorie McDonalds small fry into my mouth, drank a 250 calorie Soda, and paid for a weeks supply of food at a local grocery store. Compared to elsewhere in the world, hunger is not a problem in the United States. A. Im sure it does not surprise you, but in many areas of the world, parents do not know when their children will eat again. B. The organization aptly named Feed My Starving Children is changing this. Need Step: II. Upwards of 900 million people in the world do not receive the minimum amount of calories needed to fully function. A. Worldwide, 1 child dies every 5 seconds due to a hunger-related death. This plays out to about 16,000 hungry children dying each day. 1. Child malnourishment has profound and far-reaching effects. 2. According to facts compiled by the Bread for the World Institute, these effects include: increased chance of mental retardation brain cannot develop, pasty skin, thin or no hair, a very weak immune system that cannot guard against simple viruses: these children can often die of viruses our bodies fight off in 1 week, not to mention diarrhea, measles, and malaria, which is rampant in these areas ("Hunger Facts: International"). 3. Children are often so hungry that they end up eating dirt balls or anything they can put in their mouths. You can imagine what this does to their bodies. B. In many countries, children and families going hungry cannot do anything to help themselves; they are forced to hope that an aid organization brings the most basic necessity: food. Satisfaction Step: III. Feed My Starving Childrens innovative meals and structural potential makes them a great organization to support. A. Their innovative meals pack the most bang for not even a buck. 1. The meals are made up of rice, extruded soy nuggets, 20 vitamins and minerals, and dehydrated vegetables.

2. Each ingredient serves a purpose as this formula of ingredients was created by Minnesota food scientists 3. Just one cup of FMSC food per day provides the nutrients a child needs to survive and thrive (http://www.fmsc.org). B. One meal costs just 17 cents to make because volunteers produce 100% of the meals. C. FMSC has grown exponentially since its birth because of the structure of the organization. 1. With more money, the organization grows bigger and more children are fed. 2. When I was there in September, they told us to stop packing food, because they have more volunteers than they have food to pack. 3. Operating at 3 permanent sites and numerous mobile sites, with meals packed entirely by volunteers, FMSC is on track to deliver 70 million meals in 2008 alone! 4. Their goal is to provide 100 million meals to children by the year 2010, and this is legitimate. Visualization Step: IV. Story of a small boy who life was totally changed by their food. A. Was rescued out of a sewage well as a small boy, totally emaciated. B. After 3 months on FMSC food, is a healthy boy who is fully functioning. Action Step: V. Only you can make it possible for FMSC to eliminate the worlds hunger! A. Volunteer: they have a packing station 25 minutes away in Aurora. Get some friends, make sure FMSC knows youre coming, and make thousands of meals in a couple hours. B. Finally, what the organization really needs is money. 1. As college students, we do not have much money, but we are not poor like those who receive FMSC meals. The Word of God tells us to care for the poor, and it does not give exceptions. In Mark 12, Jesus proclaims that the poor widow who gave all she had gave more than anyone else. We are poor, and should strive to be like this woman. 2. Get creative a. If you are a guy, take the money you were going to use to buy ---new video game, more cologne, new shoes, a razor, b. Girl --- that shirt or those shoes that will match everything just right, that specific shampoo that happens to be expensive, that perfume you dont have yet that a certain guy loves, or another scrap-booking tool

c. Feel at least a little of what the hungry in the world feel --- give the money you would spend on Sunday night dinner, skip the meal, and give it to FMSC. A cheap Sunday night meal of $6 when donated to FMSC produces 36 meals! C. During this speech 1. 6 minutes 180 children died 2. 7 minutes 210 children died 3. 8 minutes 240 children died 4. Will you let them keep dying? Do what the Lord tells us to do, what the Feed My Starving Children wants us to do, and what you know you NEED to do: help FMSC save the hungry of the world.
