Every Bar. Every Special. Every Night.

Oh my goodness, where did this semester go? I cant believe it is FINALLY December, and it is about time to relax by a cozy re with some hot chocolate or apple cider, possibly a hunky man by my side and Christmas music lling up the house just as the aroma of food did on Thanksgiving. This is by far my favorite time of the year; the holidays always put me in such a cheerful mood partly because of the spirit behind the festivities and the tacky Christmas sweater I get to bring out of the dust from the back of my closet! Aside from Christmas, in October a newly crowned Miss University of Georgia graced the stages of Tate Grand Ballroom and Study Breaks was lucky enough to get a fabulous interview and photos out of Shelby McLeod. You might be seeing her in a future issue of the magazine for other talents of hers, make sure you keep a look out. Finals are right around the corner; do not let them get too stressful. Make sure to eat breakfast the day of and suck on a peppermint while taking the test, it will help your concentration. Cant wait to see everyone after the new year!

Sam, What are your New Years Resolutions? -Whitney Landry

Ryan, What is your favorite time of the year? - Chancey Smith

Ngoc, What have you never gotten as a gift, but always wanted? - Jennifer McClure

Katie, How do I make my college years the best ever? -Joey Koch

World Peace? Nahhh. Running a marathon? HA. ats cute. If I were to be completely honest, Id have to say my New Years resolutions would be not to fall in love, fall asleep (rumor has it bouncers dont take too kindly to that) or--you know-just FALL in a bar downtown again. Actually Ive only done two of those before...Ill let you guess which.

Fall happens to take the gold on this one. Id like to state, and I feel like a lot of people agree with me on this one, that everyone looks their best in the Fall. With Autumn comes jackets, boots, and multiple layers that people have been desperately waiting to wear as the malicious Texas summer finally nears its end. I dig the attitude of dress to impress, and it works best in Autumn weather!

Ever since I was old enough to play with toys, I always wanted a Barbie doll. Dont get me wrong I did have dolls to play with but I did not want just any doll, but a Barbie brand doll. Isnt that an essential part of every girls doll collection? Until this day, I have yet to call a Barbie doll my own.

Attend as many sporting events as possible, participate in a numerous amount of activities on campus and stay connected with everyone you meet; you will never know if that contact will come in handy. More tips are to stay healthy so you never miss out on anything and remember to indulge in good food and good drinks every once in awhile.

HAVE YOU EVER RE-GIFTED A PRESENT YOU RECEIVED?

Issac Terry, 22
Hometown: Lafayette Major: Marketing I had received this ugly pullover from one of my family friends, I gave them a look when I opened it up but forced a smile so they wouldnt notice and know that I was grateful that they had thought to give me something. I re-gifted it to my mom. I felt sort of bad but to help my mom out when she needed something made it equal out in my eyes.

Callie McConnell, 21
Hometown: Lawrenceville Major: Advertising No, I dont think that I have. It would honestly scare me too much to re-gift a present because all of my friends are mutual friends, and Id be afraid that they would find out I re-gifted their present.

Cellaigh Corbitt, 21
Hometown: Carnesville Major: Evolutionary Biology I only give presents to the people that I receive presents from, so re-gifting is never a good idea when in my position.

Carolina Carver, 21
Hometown: Conyers Major: Management Information Systems I re-gifted something from my meme to my cousin, and my cousin opened it in front of my meme and I had to make up a story about how I liked the jacket so much that I ended up buying my cousin the same one... it was the funniest Christmas ever. She ended up falling for the story, and she told the whole family how sweet and thoughtful I was because I wanted to share a great gift with someone that I had received. The worst part was that my mom knew, and all Christmas long, she was cracking jokes in front of everyone and nobody got it.

Katie Coon Athens Campus Ambassador, 22

Dude, the Dorm Disk rocks. It will be the next great college party toy!
- Steve V., University of Maryland

Hometown: Grayson Major: Journalism Re-gifting can be a terrible crime which is why I have never done it. I usually like what my friends and family give me, and if I dont then I just return it. I guess I re-gift it BACK to the store, but in other words, my friends and family know me pretty well!

MERRY CHRISTMAS
LERA LYNN
Whats in a name? Its an age old question and for Athens, based performing songwriter Lera Lynn on her new record, the answer is simple: a summation of all that has been, and a bold thesis of what is yet to come. The Houston-born Lynn, who in March 2012 will release her debut, Have You Met Lera Lynn?, is already wellknown in Athens for the time she spent as the sultry voice of mainstay folk-poppers Birds & Wire. In every way, Lynn is ready for her re-introduction and invites you inside each of her carefully crafted tunes to finallyand fully- meet Lera Lynn.

HOT BARTENDER
words + photos: katie coon

J-ROD MILLER
Whats your favorite part about bartending?

WATCH OUT FOR THE THUNDER

J-Rod Miller, 27 Hometown: Meldrim Major: Sociology

e people I meet by far is the best part. eres always new people out, and I love being around people. I feel like I am always at a party but I happened to be working it.

What makes you different from the other Athens bartenders?

My sense of humor and my ability to adapt like a chameleon. As a good bartender you have to be able to adapt to the di erent crowds that you are entertaining and serving, being relatable is the key to success in this industry.

How long have you been bartending and why did you start?
I have been doing this for about four years now. I wanted to work downtown because I knew I would be downtown all the time anyways. I get the opportunity to make money and see my friends all at the same time.

Whats the worst thing youve seen while bartending?

I watched a girl projectile vomit on a guy she was dancing with. Gross is putting it kindly. Ladies, please drink responsibly.

Best pick-up line heard while bartending:

I once heard a guy tell a woman that he was going to Iraq the next day in the military and needed some love before going. e woman went home with him and sure enough, he came back the next week with a huge grin on his face when he saw me. is was epic!

What do you enjoy most about college?

With college, I was given the chance to reinvent myself. Ive done everything from red coat band to harry dog mascot. All I have left to do is graduate, everything else has been accomplished.

Specialty Drink: Tropic Thunder Ingredients: 2 oz. Malibu, 1 oz. Melon, oz.

Sour, oz. OJ, oz. Pineapple, oz. Cranberry. Shake and top with cherry.

Winter has arrived, and we know all you want to do is trudge around in your sweats and Uggsor better yet, just stay at home in your pajamas. NEW YEARS EVE

Two words: Go Crazy. OD on excess and go for the glimmer with clothes that would be just a little too much on any other given day. Pair a slinky sequined dress and glitter pumps for a fun and easy way to take the party with you wherever you go. After all, everyone loves a human disco ball.

MEET THE BOYFRIENDS PARENTS

Just because youre getting introduced to Mom and Pop doesnt mean you have to throw fashion out the window; a cute dress is still totally appropriate and perfect for impressing his style maven mother. Cover up with a holiday-inspired cardigan and opaque tights, and be sure to bring a gift. Even if its something small, it gives the impression youre nice, thoughtful and wont screw over their son.

CHRISTMAS
Christmas Eve is one of the most magical nights of the yearwhether youre ve, 15 or 50. Go all out and decorate yourself in red, white and green, because today its totally okay to look like a Christmas tree. Have fun with holidayinspired accessories like jingle bells and candy canes, and pull your whole look together with patterned stockings and a red bow. We hear Santa likes that.

NEW YEARS DAY

An amazing last-night-of-2011 will inevitably be followed by a horrendously hungover rst-day-of-2012. You may feel like ass, but you dont have to look like it, so nd a middle ground. Throw on cute but comfy clothes that rep your team for a day of college football and bloody marys. Hair of the dog, ya dig?

MISS UGA
SHELBY McLEOD
helby McLeod nally did it: she was crowned Miss University of Georgia on Saturday, October 8, 2011. As McLeods name was called as the winner of Miss UGA, she threw her hands up in amazement that after three years of trying she had nally done it. McLeod joked around as she said, I didnt want to move at rst because I was scared that I had imagined it and then I would feel awkward stepping up for the crown so I just froze for a second then it all sunk in, and it all became so real. It is de nitely a moment I will never forget. McLeod has competed in the Miss UGA pageant two previous times with this year being her third. McLeod explained that each year she gained more knowledge about the Miss America organization and how to present herself to the judges and the audience as being genuine.

THIRD TIMES THE CHARM!

Preparation
McLeod prepared for this pageant more than most pageant queens prepare for any title. With each year that McLeod competed she went about it differently each time. As a freshman McLeod only knew that she wanted to compete but did not know anything about how to go about it, I just ew by the seat of my pants, said McLeod.
20 | DECEMBER 2011 | STUDYBREAKS.COM

By the time her sophomore year had rolled around she had decided that she was not going to give up. McLeod put countless hours into researching the Miss America organization and the scholarship opportunities available through the pageant. I was so nervous my sophomore year. I didnt truly let my personality shine through the interview. And I was so nervous that I was going to say something that wasnt perfect so I kind of choked. is year, I went into the pageant with the idea that I was going to give it everything I had and hold nothing back. My preparation was getting to know my facts about my platform, Relay for Life, and leaving everything on the stage so that I have no regrets, McLeod explained as she walked us through the past couple of years. Preparing through previous experience is one thing, but getting into the grind of the pageant world is a di erent kind of preparation in itself. McLeod told Study Breaks that everything leading up to the pageant, the excitement, and the preparation is her favorite part. She strives for challenging herself in all aspects of her life which is what a majority of the preparation is all about. McLeod explained that pageant girls challenge themselves mentally, physically, and emotionally while preparing.

faces for UGA which gives me that extra boost or those extra 10 seconds to convince someone why they should listen to me and join me in my e orts. Holding the title of Miss UGA will, without a doubt, open up doors that were bolted shut before, which is at least one part that McLeod is looking forward to. rough the previous pageant queens whose shoes she lls, she has heard that the connections made along the way are some of the best. Already, McLeod has gotten to met so many of the wonderful representatives from the Miss America Board and the behind-the-scenes people of UGA that help run the university. By meeting these people it has given me a greater appreciation for the university she said McLeod understands that it is not all fun and games 24/7; it can be stressful at times. e most challenging part of being Miss UGA is being in two places at once. Time management is a huge factor to consider when going out for Miss UGA, but at the end of it all I know that the all the hard work and busy schedules will be well worth it.

Embracing the Crown

Crowning Advantages
Relay for Life is an organization that McLeod can relate to, which is why she chose it as her platform this year. McLeod explained how she worked hard trying to nd a platform that she truly had a connection to because her passion would shine from within for the organization. She chose Relay for Life because in the summer of 2011, her uncle passed away from cancer. e fact of the matter is that cancer isnt going away and most people knows someone who has had some form of cancer, so with this platform I know that there a lot of people that can rally behind me and support this great cause, said McLeod as she fought the tears. She truly has a passion for this platform. McLeod knows that the crown, sash and title of Miss UGA will give her recognition that was not possible before allowing her to better her involvement in Relay for Life, In Relay for Life the people of the organization see me as one of the

DREAM ROOM

WITH

Home is where the heart is, has been a quote that has lingered in homes across the country for decades, but Corinthia Hayes has taken this quote and made it her motto. Hayes knows the importance of having a cozy living space and making it everything that represents the person living in it. Hayes has decorated in a fashion that is right out of the Victorias Secret catalog and has now shared her love for PINK with all of Athens.

Where did you get your inspiration from?

MY PLACE

I have always loved Victorias Secret PINK collection and wondered how I could pull it off as my bedroom dcor. Once I found my comforter online, I knew that everything I had imagined could be done and I would have a PINK themed room.
What made you decide to decorate versus leaving your room plain?

How did you make this room your own?

French Memo Wall

Painted border $5, Intertwined ribbon $15, Fashionable thumb tacks to hold ribbon $2.

Having a decorated home and living space is something I have always grown up with. Decorating makes it a more comfortable living space; it makes the space feel less like college and more like my home. This is a place that I know I can relax in and be myself.

When I started projecting my ideas about what I wanted, there were certain people that could not see my vision and thought it was a bad idea. I made it my own by going with what I wanted and not what others thought would work since I would be the one living in it. I still kept the space very functional by hiding all my knick-knacks in my cubby holes and in Victorias Secret shopping bags.
What is the best way to describe your room?

Id say that it is super fun and cute. If I could choose an underwear to describe it, then I would choose boy short underwear; its fun, sexy, cute and kind of tomboy all at the same time. I am not a super girly person, and pink isnt even my favorite color, but I wouldnt choose any other design for this time in my life.
Can this be done on a budget?

Victorias Secret Their bedspreads are great because they are reversible!

Definitely! I know its the best, but I bought the cheapest paint I could find that would still get the job done. The most expensive piece in my room would be the comforter, but without it then the space would not be complete. I guess it is my key piece in my room.

Baby its cold outside, but heyyou still need to know whats hot (and, more importantly, not). So now that the semester is over, its the perfect time to get your shit together and figure out what to do to make this a holiday to remember. In a good way.

HOT
Stocking Stuffing

Wearing It All On NYE

Theres no such thing as excess on New Years Eve. The holiday shouts for sequins, demands dazzle and straight up begs for bedazzling. So put on your shiniest stuff and ring in 2012 in sparkly style.

Baring It All on NYE

Years ago, when Facebook was fresh, you couldve been totally pissed about that tagged pic of your nip slip. But reallyyou shouldve learned your lesson by now. Theres no such thing as privacy anymore so for Gods sake, close your legs and zip up your fly or, ya know, at least wear underwear.

Yes, we understand the holidays are horrible if youre not in love or whatever, but sorry, that doesnt give you an excuse to manhandle someone into meeting you under the mistletoe. If youre lonely, deal with it the old fashioned waywith booze.

Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa? Choosing just one is so not fun, so why not opt to celebrate all three? To the untrained eye youll look awesomely open-minded and multicultural even if youre totally doing it for the food and presents.

Nobody likes a Scrooge, so stop being a buzzkill, shut your emo ass up and just admit it: you really do kind of like Christmas music. Or at least getting a month off from school.

Sipping Spiked Cocoa

It keeps you warm, it gets you tipsy and best of all, Grandma will have no idea. Top it off with a little alcoholic whipped cream and youre good to go.

Chugging Four Loko

It tastes gross and has a nasty habit of making you obnoxious and getting you naked. Be smart and stay away from it around your family this breakyour parents have been through enough.

New Years Resolutions

New year, new start. Get pumped because 2012 is when you finally (FINALLY!) run that marathon, learn French, fall in love and take up the electric guitar. And who cares if you havent quite managed to accomplish those goals before; tenth time is the charm.

New Years Revolutions

With operation Occupy Wall Street going on all over the US, activism is back with a vengeance and passivity is totally pass. Actually giving a shit has never been more hip. STUDYBREAKS.COM | DECEMBER 2011 | 27
