United we Stand Divided we Fall

In the name of Allah the Beneficent the Merciful

Over the past few years we have heard our Ulema calling for unity amongst Muslims and we have heard it loud and clear. Lets explore what Unity really means and why the need has arisen for our Ulema to make the plea. All we need to do to understand the call to unity is take a look around us. We see Muslim brothers calling each other mushriks, bidatees, kuffaar etc., yet we all claim to be on the path of the Ahle Sunnah wal Jamaaah. Was it the practice of the Sahaabah e Kiram, the Awliya e Kiram to call each other by such derogatory names? We have seen how such name-calling can lead to families splitting up and more alarmingly, lead to rifts within the Ummah. We in effect assist the very Kuffaar whom we condemn for their atrocities against our Muslims in Palestine, Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan etc. We have witnessed and continue to witness the bloodshed of millions of Muslims as a result of this very curse of name-calling. RasulAllah (saw) also warned us of the following: "When two Muslims face each other in fighting and one kills the other, then both the killer and the killed are in the hell-fire." The Companions asked, "O Messenger of Allah, this is the killer - what about the poor person who has been killed?" The Prophet (saw), said "He had the intention to kill his companion." [Bukhari and Muslim] The people have a responsibility to say Stop! Let us not be obstacles in the path towards Unity of the Ummah. We have a duty to encourage our brothers and sisters to forgive each other and to learn from dreadful incidents such as those mentioned above. Education in this regard is key. This Deen is advice so let us advise our brothers and sisters to do all that is good, be it attending a majlis in a musjid or attending a function wherein the salaat and salaam on our beloved Nabi [saws] will be uttered. We claim to love ALLAH and we all say we are the followers of our Leader Muhammad [saws] so if are truthful then we should also love each other for the Pleasure of Allah. We should never be of the opinion that any one madh-hab is superior to another. The concept of Unity in Islam is easy to follow. The problem is the lack of commitment to Unity. We somehow place our personal values, which are sometimes in total contradiction to the commands of Allah, above Unity for the sake of Islam. Unity in Islam is not difficult, except when we allow our prejudices to take over. The only solution is to submit to the Wisdom of Allah in all matters, even in how we view ourselves and others, albeit difficult or different from what we have always done. Allah says in the Holy Quraan The Muminoon are but a single Brotherhood. (The Holy Quran, 49:10) Further more, Allah swt says in the Holy Quraan The Believers, men and women, are protectors one of another: they enjoin the ma`roof (all of Islaam), and forbid the munkar (all that is evil; kufr): they observe regular prayers, pay Zakat, and obey Allah and His Messenger. On them will Allah pour His mercy: for Allah is exalted in power, Wise! (The Holy Quran, 9:71) In the above ayaats we have the answers to all the questions and problems facing our brothers and sisters in different lands. If we unite we will be ONE voice condemning all sinful acts against Palestinians, Pakistanis, Afghanis, Iraqis. If we unite our zakaat will assist those who need it most, we can lead a just society and we will In sha Allah be in the ideal position to confront all forms of oppression in Muslim lands. It is not too late to start. Every individual effort towards the Unity of the Ummah counts in this struggle. May Allah swt make it easy for the Ummah to establish Unity. May Allah fill our hearts with the Love of the Deen of Allah and for our fellow muslim brothers and sisters. Aameen.
