Vice-Chancellors Message
Congratulations on your entry to QUT. The years ahead will be an important time of personal and intellectual growth as you develop the knowledge required for a particular career and general skills for both professional and personal life. The first few days at university, like other transitional experiences in life, can be a bewildering and even traumatic experience. Commencing students typically experience a sea of unfamiliar faces, a seemingly endless number of forms and regulations, and the uncertainty of learning in a new environment. QUTs Orientation Program is one way of helping you through this time. Orientation provides you with information through faculty talks, library and laboratory tours, and information about QUT and the facilities we offer. QUTs Orientation Program also shows you the human face of QUT, with many of our students and staff volunteers acting as human signposts to direct you through the initial turbulent days. The personal interaction you have at this time will form the beginning of a network of professional and personal associations you will make during your studies here, and one that you will maintain for many years afterwards. As part of your orientation, the information contained in this booklet will help you to settle in quickly and to begin your studies with a broader perspective on your academic area and QUT as a whole. Welcome to QUT. I hope you will make the most of your time here.

Professor Peter Coaldrake Vice-Chancellor

Workshops and support groups Semester Two

East West Centre I Block, Gardens Point campus
East West is an initiative of International Student Services (QUT). The East West Program aims to encourage interaction between international and local students and staff and promotes the sharing of skills and experiences. The Gardens Point Program promotes recreation opportunities such as trips and social functions, specific cross-cultural activities, accommodation services for international students and linkages with international student associations. East-West is about celebrating diversity. It is a venue of acknowledging skills, self expression and cultural confidence. It is about listening to stories of sojourners both international and local students who have been overseas as students. It is about both students and staff in an equal footing, sharing a good break in style and on campus. It is about instigating a new habit of cross-cultural awareness and being comfortable with it. It is about announcing a series of events thereafter that are all geared towards a sense of community, goodwill and friendship. It is an invitation to all to participate regardless of race, cultural origin, religious conviction, political beliefs, gender, age and professional orientation. Visit www.issupport. qut.edu.au or ISS News for upcoming events.
