Welcome to Planet Nilknarf

This month's cover and the picture above feature's Janette's colourful collection of iPods and her exciting creative project of making all these delightful decorative mats to display them on! It's been fun watching her collection grow! Each one is a different colour with its own name and personality! At the top on the left, the shiny yellow-gold one on the blue mat is Dada Apple, the red one on the shiny green mat with red lace is Coila Crabapple. In the middle row is deep purple Hugo, pale blue Minnie, a somewhat larger 4th generation iPod, also known as Grandma Minnie, her first iPod which is pink and named Mama Apple and the bottom row from left to right are Kermit, Apollo and Clementine. The mat on the cover was made from a jacket that Janette bought at a yard sale. She gave me the remaining material to make a creative project of my own! While she was here during her October visit, we dressed our dolls in the following new outfits:

If the ones on the left look familiar, it's because mine already wore hers at the National Carousel Association convention. The ones on the left were made with a piece of purple flowered fabric I bought at the big Quilt Show in Bobcaygeon for only 50 cents!! I also updated our I've Been Everywhere dresses:

The picture on the left is how they looked last year and on the right I've added names and images of places our dolls have been since then. I put Port Dalhousie in big, colourful rainbow letters to remind me of all the colourful candy we saw in the store there! It may be hard to see but both our dresses have Bobcaygeon in dark blue with certain dates as we'd brought them along to my mom's house. My doll has obviously been to a few more places than hers but hers has been to North Bay and mine hasn't yet! We're hoping to both go there together in July of 2012! Best of all, my aunt can drive us there because she has a friend she sees in Timmins every summer and can drop us off and pick us up along the way. We just have to make our own way to Fenelon Falls first and stay at her place the night before. In fact we've been talking about staying a couple days early to do some sight-seeing in Bobcaygeon and Fenelon Falls!! That Horseless Carriage museum is open by appointment only and they have an amazing collection of music boxes and barrel organs I am looking forward to filming and sharing footage of! And North Bay has THREE wonderful carousels we are looking forward to photographing and riding; the original Heritage carousel, the Winter Wonderland carousel which is populated by local wildlife, and Edna Scott has her very own carousel right in her own back yard which she has invited us to check out!!

Record Player Round-a-Bouts Presenting the Fabulous Fibonacci Galloppers!!

As many of you know I am finally back in school and back in Sabrina's class! As part of this scene I've been involved in an exciting new art-related math project? Or is it a math-related art project? Anyway, on my first day back in class Sabrina taught us about the Italian mathematician, Fibonacci. First she wrote the following numbers on the board:

1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55...

If you're wondering about the carousel horses on the preceding page the answer is quite simple. They are part of my extra-special Christmas gift to you readers, a Fibonacci-themed carousel that you can put together yourself following my instructions. You will need these horses along with scissors, glue, cardboard, straws, pipe cleaners, gift wrap and whatever else your imagination suggests. You may even design your own horses. Why are they going the wrong way? Simple; we read from left to right and I wanted the numbers going in the right direction. Also, it will be going the right way when you spin it on your record player. Carousels here in Canada and the United States usually go counter-clockwise, but the ones in Britain usually go clockwise. Anyway, I started with a 12-inch cardboard circle which I got from tracing a record album. Don't forget the hole in the middle. Then I divided the circle into eight sections and covered each section with a piece of gift wrap to decorate the floor. Unfortunately, my pieces weren't quite big enough so I disguised the seams with ribbon. I also cut a section of cardboard tube from a roll of paper towels to create the centre pole, which I also covered in gift wrap.

I decided that instead of spending money on Bristol board, I would just recycle cardboard from a cereal box to create the horses and the rounding boards. I'd already used the computer to shrink them

down to size and print them. Now all I had to do was cut them out roughly and stick them to the cardboard. Then I'd cut them out of the cardboard .

I then used the centre pole to measure and cut my straws for the poles and drop rods. Note to self; it is IMPOSSIBLE to cut all straws EXACTLY the same length. They're too poppitty!! Not to worry. When the rounding boards are built, hopefully they'll disguise this little imperfection.

I inserted pipe-cleaners into the straws for the drop-rods and the horses. Drop-rods are the poles that attach the sweeps and rounding boards to the floor of the carousel.

Here are all the horses, ready to go, and I have cut small notches around the edge of the platform where the drop rods are being anchored.

Now it's really starting to look like a merry-go-round. At least the kind in a children's playground, teehee! Carefully, I used a knife to make holes in the floor where I want the horses to go.

Ugh! I wish this hadn't turned out so blurry! Now that the horses are established in their position, it's time for the rounding boards. I measure out a piece of cardboard...

This is the template for my rounding board. I scan it onto the computer and make copies on paper. As you can see I was getting to be in a rather silly mood as this angel is acting a bit devilish!!! With my trusty black felt tip and Crayola pencil-crayons I do the lettering on my rounding boards.

I don't get to work on it again until the next day so I fiddle around with more pipe cleaners to figure out how I'm going to make the roof.

I cut out the rounding boards and then I realize they're not quite big enough for the cardboard I'm going to glue them onto. Oh well, good excuse to use more gift wrap!! The shiny paper with the stars was left over from my husband's birthday presents and the black paper with the colourful streamers and confetti isn't really gift wrap at all but a print of a photo I took of the carpet when Janette and I were at the Movieland wax museum at Niagara Falls. I've gotten a lot of mileage out of that motif. You may recall that back in the spring I used some of it to decorate my shoe box for the Nike project I did in Marketing class!!

I assemble the rounding boards and put them in place using Scotch tape. Unfortunately, once I am more than halfway through I realize the rounding boards are just a wee bit too big and they are causing my carousel to buckle and bulge lopsidedly so I have to take them out again and trim them just a smidgen smaller! Sooner or later after much futzing around and adjusting, the carousel is complete!

I top it with a splash of curly glittery ribbon left over from last Christmas!

And now the moment we've all been waiting for: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GutZhsADYW4

Was that ever fun!!! I guess this will have to fill the void until I win the lottery and learn how to carve. The next creative project I have in mind will be repainting the paper-mache carousel horse I bought in Toronto 20 years ago to make it look like one of the horses I've designed!!

Worthwhile Readage December Book reviews

Living Oprah by Robyn Okrant and Room by Emma Donaghue

If there's one thing both these books have in common it is the fact that I've heard about them both on CBC radio and I'd been dying to read these books ever since I'd heard their authors being interviewed. Living Oprah is Robyn Okrant's fascinating account of her decision to experiment for an entire year of doing and buying everything recommended by Oprah Winfrey on her show. Ms. Okrant is a former graphic designer and yoga instructor and I imagine she must earn pretty good money to embark on all of these escapades as directed by the Queen of Talk Shows. Starting with New Year's Day. Ms. Okrant invites a bunch of friends over and as usual, there is plenty of food for everyone, only this time it's all Oprah's favorite healthy recipes including blueberry squares with spinach, which is supposed to be hidden but tends to sink to the bottom of the crust in a slimy green sediment. This kind of reminds me of my aunt's story about the rhubarb squares that were accidentally made with asparagus ends! She also mentions a recipe for chocolate chip cookies made with chick peas that everyone took one bite of and left! I've had chick pea chocolate chip cookies before when my school had a healthy eating seminar and I actually liked them. You couldn't taste the chick peas at all in the ones I had. Seriously, I really have to admire Ms. Okrant's disciple and determination to do everything Oprah said no matter what, starting with embarking on the Best Life diet and exercise program. Ironically, the very next day after Oprah introduced this, her show had her eating pumpkin ice cream with caramel sauce, graham crackers and pecans! Even watching the show every day whether you like the topic or not requires discipline. If a show's about weight loss I tend to switch the channel! To me, weight loss is like a penis; it's fine and dandy to be proud of having a big one but please don't be holding your pants out to show it off or keep trying to ram it down my throat! I even change the channels when there are Jenny Craig commercials! I'm especially sick of Valerie Bertinelli, who also happened to be a guest on her show, talking about, what else, the 40 pounds she lost on the Jenny Craig plan. She also recommended a weighted vest she wore throughout her regimen.

I had to laugh when Oprah said that everyone should go and see Celine Dionne in concert! No offense to Celine's fans but she is one of my least favorite performers. Next to rap, my least favorite type of music are these squanging pop divas who sound like they're giving birth to an Oldsmobile trying to stretch out each word with as many syllables as possible. Ms. Okrant and a friend actually braved a snowstorm to go to Celine's concert and discovered that they actually enjoyed it after all and she knew more of Celine's songs than she thought as they're such a part of our culture everywhere. She mentions the five or so items Oprah says every woman's wardrobe should have. Among these is included white jeans and a pair of leopard flats. I don't know about you but when I wear white jeans I feel as though I am tempting fate. I haven't worn white pants since 1996! I don't care what the feminine hygiene commercials say, I refuse to be caught dead in white pants anywhere near That Time of the Month. Even though it is supposed to be surgically impossible for me to do so nowadays...

As for the leopard flats, I FREAKIN' LOVE THE PAIR the author wears on the cover!!! Where did she get these? Next to a pair of Gene Simmons' dragon boots or Dorothy's Ruby Slippers, these are my most coveted pair of footwear!! Funny, I already HAVE a pair of leopard flats, even before I'd heard that Oprah said I SHOULD have them, but I never wear mine because they're kind of narrow and hurt my feet. Maybe I should wear them around the house with thick socks to stretch them out. But the kind Ms. Okrant wears on the cover are like Chinese slippers!! I haven't seen Chinese slippers in year even though I hear you can still buy them in China town, the black canvas flats with a strap across the instep, that I used to love wearing all the time when I was in high school!! With the exception of a lilac pair one of my classmates bought on our school trip to New York, I've usually only seen them in black. She mentions the five books Oprah says everyone should read once. I've never read any of them, at least not yet but I did see the movie of Lolita on television. However I lost interest and changed the channel when I found out that Lolita was pregnant. Another book she mentioned on her list was Waiting for Godot. Janette had to read that one in high school and of course, Godot never does show up!

It amazes me how much money the author spends every month on all the things endorsed on Oprah's show. Most of it's more than I've ever spent on rent in any given apartment I stayed in when I was single, between 3 and 5 hundred dollars. And she ends up being interviewed on several talk shows even though at first she fought to keep her anonymity. Some people even accused her of using this as a stunt to get herself on Oprah's show. At some point Oprah even sends her her very own electronic reading tablet. After much thought, Ms. Okrant returns it to Oprah with a polite note explaining her policy of refusing free handouts. However, doesn't someone give her a weighted vest like Valerie's earlier in the book? Living Oprah was a fascinating read from start to finish. It really made me think. Whatever Oprah likes everyone wants. There seems to be no greater endorsement of a product or service than to have it recommended on Oprah's show. Too bad her daily talk show is over now but just shown in reruns, but can you imagine what would happen if she caught wind of my carousel project and bought several horses or dolls from me or even one of my quilts? (Nudge-nudge, wink-wink, hint-hint!!! Tee-hee-hee!) The second book in this month's selection is Room by Emma Donaghue. It is a fascinating work of fiction told from the point of view of five-year-old Jack who who is born and imprisoned with his mother in an 11 by 11 foot shed by a man he refers to as Old Nick. Jack's mother does the best she can to home school him, he learns to read at an early age and has an advanced vocabulary for a child his age. His mother is quite smart and resourceful when it comes to creating toys and games from the materials at hand and their own imaginations. Toys include a snake made from hollowed out egg shells and a labyrinth made from toilet paper rolls to roll a small ball through. Games include Corpse in which the winner is the person who can lay still without moving for the longest time and Parrot in which the player must repeat word-for-word as best as he can whatever words he's just heard on TV. TV to Jack is a window to other planets. Little is known about the outside world. The shed has no windows. The only daylight Jack sees comes in through a skylight on the roof. And his mother still breastfeeds him. There is no reason not to as food can be scarce sometimes. They refer to it discreetly as some. The author spoke of her book on CBC radio only discussing Jack's existence in Room as he calls his surroundings. Many inanimate objects are like friends to him, referred to by name with capital letters such as Table, Lamp, Rug, and, of course, his mother's tooth that fell out, Tooth. Jack carries Tooth everywhere with him and sometimes keeps Tooth in his own mouth. Then comes the night of the great escape. Jack's mother tries to get Jack to fake being sick, and then fake his death. Old Nick carries him out of the house rolled up in Rug, which he places in the back of his truck. At the first stop sign, he tries to wriggle free from Rug and after a bit of a fight with Old Nick he manages to get help from a local family and contact the police. The rest of the book chronicles the challenges Jack and his mother face getting used to the outside world once again. Room was the only world Jack ever knew. His mother had been cooped up there since she was nineteen. She's twenty-seven now. They are kept at a mental

hospital for the first few weeks and can't go outside without special sunglasses like the kind that were used by those miners that had been trapped for all those months a year or two ago. There is so much that Jack has never seen before! After being cooped up in Room for so long his initial view of the world around him is very strange because he lacks depth perception. Why do all those people outside look so tiny like fairies? There were days back in Room where Jack's mother was what he called Gone. These were days when she just wanted to stay in bed and not deal with anyone or anything. Jack learned how to entertain and take care of himself at those times. He also was taken home to his grandparents while his mother required extra time to recover. Usually when a book in the library has a Fast Read label I tend to shy away from it because I'm afraid I won't have time to finish it before it's due back the following week. But when I saw Room on the shelf, like Living Oprah, I just went Oooooh!!! and I HAD to take it home and read it start to finish! All in all another fascinating read from start to finish. It really captured my imagination and caused me to think!

Dave's Birthday: The Big Five-Oh!!

Thursday, October 27th was my husband Dave's 50th birthday. I wanted to get his picture onto City TV's Breakfast Television but now they tell you they want you to SNAIL MAIL your birthday photos at least TWO MONTHS in advance. Anyway, it was my special privilege to introduce him to the Wonderful World of MP3 Players. I'd bought him one just like mine earlier that month at Best Buy, same place where I bought the first one. I've been regularly loaderizing stuff for him ever since!

I also bought him the latest Pirates of the Caribbean movie! The following Saturday was his family birthday supper at his dad and stepmum's. They served

us a wonderful roast beef dinner and dessert was a delightful concoction made with jelly roll slices covered in lemon pie filling, whipped cream and rainbow sprinkles.

The big colourful box turned out to be a set of bathroom scales, as he's always using theirs when we come over to their place!

Breast Cancer Awareness Day

Friday, October 28 was Breast Cancer Awareness day at our school so in order to show our support we all wore pink. I wanted to find a pink wig, but since I couldn't, at least I had my fuzzy pink top hat I bought years ago at the CNE. Our teacher, Sabrina actually went the extra mile and dyed her hair pink, as well as raised funds in the process! :)

Here's Sabrina and Nefeisha and as you can see, even my doll got into the act!

2011 Royal Winter Fair

On Wednesday, November 9 , I went to the Royal Winter Fair. Once again it was awesome! I had a wonderful time! There weren't as many butter sculptures this year, but, as usual, DooDoo the clown put on a wonderful show for kids of all ages.
th

Once again I saw all kinds of animals:

Nothing like combat fatigues to make three otherwise ordinary sheep look like they're up to something!!

I was fascinated by these Crested white ducks with their interesting hairdos! Apparently, so was Waddle!!

And, of course Waddle and Margaret had their share of exciting adventures!

Go figure, we'd only just arrived and he was already in trouble. See Margaret wrestle an alligator to make it let go!!!!

I won Waddle at the CNE well over a decade ago and used to take pictures of him having adventures long before I'd ever had the Travelling Dolls. It had been awhile since he'd been out anywhere and he seemed to want to come along on this adventure. It was nice of the two good friends to have each other's company! Waddle was kind of disappointed that his cousins were kind of snobby, but at least he and Margaret enjoyed a good game of hide and seek!

While I was there I had my first DEEP FRIED MARS BAR!!! Tsk-tsk-tsk! Sin on a stick! Orgasm of the taste buds!!! Uhhhhnnnhhhh! (drools like Homer Simpson!) Seriously, deepfried Mars bars are one of those things you've simply GOT to try at LEAST once in a lifetime. I'll probably have one again someday but not anytime too soon. The vendor who sold it to me said I wouldn't need a flu shot because this thing would give me so much energy! We chatted a bit and she asked where I was from and mentioned that they come to the Oshawa Rib Fest to sell these things there every year! Another wondrous delicacy I had to try this year was CHOCOLATE-COVERED BACON!! I bought one each for me and my hubby and was it ever GOOOOOOOOOOOD!!! However, please be advised they are EXTREMELY crumbly. Best to hold a plate underneath to catch the pieces of chocolate coating. It is an amazing symphony of sweet and salty!! There were many food samples everywhere and I was tempted to bring home a nice big slab of SMOKED TROUT!! It was available in assorted flavors including Cajun, which I liked the best, but since it had been refrigerated I wasn't sure how it would survive the long journey home. To me they tasted a lot like oversized kippered snacks. They were also quite expensive at $15 a fillet and I'd already spent most of my money. This year LCBO had a kiosk there too and I was also tempted to bring home a bottle of Ladybug Rose. My backpack was already pretty heavy though. At the same kiosk where I'd bought Dave's Bag Balm for his hands last year, I bought myself a bottle of Mane & Tail horse shampoo! I love this stuff!! Last time I bought it was in the States back in the summer of 1995, the last time I'd visited Kim. It was all over the news! The story was that there was this lady who was grooming her horse and she noticed how thick, beautiful and shiny his mane and tail were and decided to try it on her own hair. The news spread like wildfire and soon humans everywhere were doing likewise and enjoying the results! Naturally, I had to buy a bottle for myself. That first bottle only cost around $4.00 but it lasted me over two years as it is highly concentrated and you only use a drop about the size of a nickel. This time it was around $12, but well worth it as it's the same big bottle I'd bought back then. I've seen it for that much in beauty supply stores but at a fraction of the size, bottled under the name Lucky Kentucky. Merchandise available was a horse-lover's paradise, but I kept my promise, despite temptation, not to acquire anymore stuffed animals. I have no more room for anything else in the house! These were also very tempting. Painted Ponies remind me very much of my own carousel horses I, and others, have designed!

I was also quite dazzled by this display: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZy9Ma4vs5Y The video footage hardly does them justice. And I didn't buy any because whenever we have this sort of thing hanging outside it usually ends up getting stolen! :( I gave DooDoo this T-shirt and here we had our annual picture taken together:

Anti-Bullying Awareness Week

Recently at my school we had Anti-Bullying Awareness week. On Monday we had an interesting activity in class. We were instructed over the PA system to pick up a piece of paper and crumple it into a tight ball. We were then told to open up this sheet of paper and try to make it as smooth as possible. It can't be done. Once a piece of paper has been crumpled it will never be the same again. Same as a person who is the victim of bullying. I have been one throughout my entire elementary and high school years and even now face the occasional cat-claw as Janette and I call it. It's fine and dandy that the threat of bullying is FINALLY being given the recognition it deserves. After all we are now aware of the damage that it does, that it is, indeed a VERY REAL problem. But is anything actually DONE about it? Two women I know in school, one in my class and another in Kim's class next door both have pre-teen daughters who are both, like me, on the autism spectrum. And both these girls are

being mercilessly bullied in school, just as I was. Heather's daughter even suffered a BROKEN TAILBONE at the hands of these jerks!! She complained to the principal's office but all they did was give these kids a warning. Oooooh! They're SO SCARED!! It's stopped them for the time being but then they go and get ANOTHER bunch of kids to pick on this poor girl! The WHOLE SCHOOL is after her, just like they were after me back in the day! And what can be done to punish them? Warnings aren't enough. These bullies have no fear! They can and sometimes do literally get away with MURDER!! If I were principal they wouldn't get away with ANY crap!! At the risk of getting arrested myself, I would like to take these bullies and hand-cuff them to the radiator, duct tape headsets to their ears and play them full blast recordings (I'll put on my own MP3 player with my KISS music first!!) of screaming babies for the next six hours or until their eardrums start to bleed and trickle out their nostrils, whichever comes first!! That and force feed them liver as well as duct tape their eyelids open and shine a very bright light in their faces! Anyone have any better ideas? Even one of my own classmates has been suffering from bulling here in our own school. She goes to a different class in the afternoon and first this crazy guy asks for a bite of her sandwich. That's no big deal but then he offered her $50 and asked if he could LICK HER FINGERS!!! EWWWW! CREEPY!! And if that wasn't bad enough he even asked if she'd give him a BLOW JOB!! AY CARAMBA!!!X-# At least nothing stupid like this happens to me in school nowadays but I've had my share of incidences just walking down the street on my way to or from downtown and once a whole car-full of rowdy teenagers went ballistic on me on the Go-Train. The conductor did nothing but stand there with an embarrassed grin. I should have complained to the head office. Perhaps my most recent incidence happened when I was getting onto the Go-Train at Union Station on my way home the day Janette and I had been to Port Dalhousie. I had just stepped onto the train and was on my way upstairs when some asshole said Nice Ass, Horse-Bitch! I felt so dirty and violated and too shocked to speak. It wasn't until several hours later I thought of what I wished I could have said. Thank you. All the better to sit on you while I beat you senseless with my riding crop. I also know that I'm not alone because it wasn't only students but TEACHERS who bullied me in elementary school. My kindergarten teacher couldn't figure out what was wrong with me. She wondered why I cried all the time. HELLO? I cried all the time because she was always SCREAMING at me!! I learned later that this is one of the worst things you can do to a person on the autism spectrum. (It doesn't help that I didn't even KNOW I had autism until I was almost 40!) Loud noises actually cause us to feel PHYSICAL discomfort and a steady tirade of loud verbal abuse is like the audio equivalent of being bombarded with falling rocks!! Mrs. Wheeler and her assistant Mrs. Griffin were also always yelling at me, not to mention pinching my waist and calling me Chubby-chops, making remarks about my spare tire. And then to top it off, my school bus driver also sexually molested me. I never told anyone until over ten years later. It just wasn't done. I accepted what was being done to me as par for the course because my teachers were always telling me how bad I was. Soon after third grade started I didn't have to take the bus anymore because I stopped going to Dublin Public School and started going to Forest Manor. But the teasing was just as bad if

not worse. You NEVER live it down when you've been seen riding to school on the short bus. My worst enemy was Lawrence Sinukoff. The less said about him the better. Thank God he moved away just before I started junior high. How would I have survived there if I still had to put up with his bullying there too. I was still being picked on by other kids and in grade 8 I got myself into big shit because I bit Dave Pattel on the shoulder. HELLO? I was TRYING TO DEFEND MYSELF! He nearly STRANGLED me!! For the next year or so every time he saw me he would thank me for the scar! Well, he deserved it. And at least that scar probably healed eventually. These kind of scars, the ones on the inside do NOT! But Dave and Lawrence, if you guys are out there, I forgive you. I'm curious to know how you've turned out. What have you done with your life? What have you learned? Did you ever turn over a new leaf? Or have you been in jail? Did you beat your wives? Or is somebody else bullying you and making your lives a living hell? I'm curious. By asking what's become of you, am I opening a nasty can of worms?
