TITLE: OBJECTIVES:

BASIC INSTRUMENTATION FAMILIARIZATION

1. To acquaint the students with basic instrumentation and their functions. 2. To experimentally determine the internal resistance and loading properties of a meter. BODY OF REPORT: THE CURRENT METER Schematic diagram: (R)/ 10 K/100%

QUESTIONS: 1. If a 1.0 mA meter were used, what shunt would extend to 10 mA? Answer: 16.667 m 2. What value of shunt resistance would be requiring extending the 50 A to read 5.0mA? Answer: 440.44 mA THE VOLTMETER DEVELOPMENT DATA Vsupply = Ifs = R =

0.113 V 1.06 mA 1.06 X 10-4 V

1. How does this reading compare with that of the electronic voltmeter when it is converted to voltage? Answer: There is a little difference in the output reading because the electronic voltmeter gives us an exact measurement.

2. Reset the range switch of the electronic voltmeter to the 0 to 1.5 V scale and re-measure the voltage. Is there any closer to that of the experimental meter? Answer: Yes, it is because the electronic voltmeter gives us accurate value of the voltage supply rather that in estimating the voltage supplies using the regulated power supply.

QUESTIONS: 1. Why is it necessary to know what the resistance of a meter is? Answer: It is necessary to know the resistance of a meter because it may cause a little difference in measuring the total resistance of the circuit. It is because when we tap the meter, the resistance of the meter will be connected to the circuit that add another resistivity in the circuit. 2. What are the advantages of knowing how to extend the range of an ammeter? Answer: One of the advantages of knowing how to extend the range of an ammeter is to avoid the damage in the instrument. Adjusting the ammeter depending on the expected current that will flow will prevent the damage or the over flowing of current in the instrument to be tap on the circuit. 3. Are there any advantages to being able to make a voltmeter from an microammeter? Answer: Yes, in terms of versatility and extended use, having a microammeter and a voltmeter in the same equipment makes it durable to use, the only thing that make it complicated is when the set-up of the microammeter conflicts to the set-up of the voltmeter, thats when the disadvantage and may occur. CONCLUSIONS I therefore conclude that in dealing with the different electronic equipment, we have to be able to know their proper use, properties, specifications and their functions by familiarizing ourselves in using such equipment. In determining the internal resistance of a meter, we may calculate it or even through experimental method. In an ammeter, the resistance of an ammeter affects the total resistance of a circuit. When it is places in a series, as when measuring, the current will actually be larger than that measured since the meter resistance will limit the total current.
