Prove that the error involved in using the mean diameter in calculating the Youngs modulus is (100/D)2 percent. A steel bar of length 20cm and 5cm X 5cm in section is connected at its end to an aluminum bar of 25cm length and 8cm X 8cm in section, such that they have a common longitudinal axis. Find the load which will reduce the total length by 0.25mm. Find also the total work done Take Es=200GPa and Ea=70GPa. Draw the shear force and B.M. diagrams for a simply supported beam of length 8m and carrying a uniformly distributed load of 10 KN/m for a distance of 4m as shown in figure.

A beam is simply supported and carries a uniformly distributed load of 40 KN/m run over the whole span. The section of the beam is rectangular having depth as 500mm. If the maximum stress in the material of the beam is 120N/mm2 and moment of inertia of the section is 7X108mm4, find the span of the beam. An I-section has the following dimensions. Flanges: 150mm X 20mm. Web: 300mm X 10mm. The maximum shear stress developed in the beam is 16.8N/mm2. Find the shear force to which the beam is subjected. A 6.5m long cantilever carries a uniformly distributed load over the entire length. If the slope at the force end is 10 what is the detection at the free end? A simply supported beam 5m long carries concentrated loads of 10KN each at a distance 1m from the ends. Calculate Maximum slope and deflection for the beam. Slope and deflection under each load. Take EI=1.2x104KN.m2. Draw the Mohrs circle of stress if a piece of material is subjected to tensile stresses of 80 MPa and 35MPa on mutually perpendicular planes. Find the plane across which the resultant stress is most inclined to the normal. Find also the magnitude of the resultant stress on this plane. Using max. strain energy theory, estimate the safe dia. for a mild steel rod to carry an axial pull of 10 KN together with a transverse shear 5 KN and the factor of safety 3. Take the Poissons ratio as 0.3. *****

If the modulus of elasticity of the material of the rod is 2x105N/mm2, determine. The stress, strain and elongation of the rod. A cantilever 2.0m long is loaded with a uniformly distributed load of 2KN/m run over a length of 1.25m from the free end. It also carries a point load of 2.5KN at a distance of 0.25m from the free end. Draw the shear force and bending moment diagrams of the cantilever. Define Neutral axis. Sketch the bending stress distribution across the cross section of a rectangular beam section 230x400m subjected to 60KNm moment. Calculate the ratio of maximum to mean shear stress in an I beam, 200mm wide 350mm deep, having the flanges 25mm thick web 12.5mm thick. Also find the percentage of the total shearing force carried by the web. A beam ABC of length 3l has one support at the left end and the other support at a distance 2l from the left end. The beam carries a point load w at the right end. Find the slopes over each support and at the right end. Find also the max upward deflection between the supports and the deflection at the right end. Write the expressions for max. slope and deflection of a cantilever beam with a point load at free end. Find the max. slope and deflection of a cantilever beam, when loaded with uniformly distributed load. At a point in a strained material, the principal stresses are 100N/mm2 tensile and 40N/mm2 compressive. Determine the resultant stress in magnitude and direction on a plane inclined at 600 to the axis of major principal stress. What is the intensity of shear stress in the material at the point? A body is under the action of two principal stresses of 40N/mm2 and -70N/mm2, the third principal stress being zero. If the elastic limit in the simple tension as well as compression is 200N/mm2, find the factor of safety, based on the line elastic limit according to any five theories of failure. The decrease in length is given as 0.085cm and increase in breadth is 0.004cm. A cantilever beam of length 2m carries the point loads as shown in figure. Draw the shear force and B.M diagrams for the cantilever beam.

List the assumption involved in the theory of simple bending. Compare the weight of two beams of the same material and equal strength. One beam is of solid circular cross section, while the other beam is of hollow circular section, the internal diameter being 0.85 times the external diameter. Find the section modulus for a rectangular cross section of 100mm x 300mm. A beam of a square section of 300mm side is used with one diagonal horizontal making at a diamond shaped cross section. Find the maximum shear stress in the cross section. Also sketch the shear stress distribution across the depth of the section. Calculate the average shear stress. The shear force on the section is 120KN. A horizontal beam of uniform section is pinned at its ends which are at the same level and is loaded at the left hand pin with an anticlockwise moment M and at the right hand pin with a clockwise moment 2m both in the same vertical plane. The length between the pins is L. Find the angles of slope at each end and the deflection of the midpoint of the span in terms of M, L, E and I.

State the first theorem of the moment area method. State and prove moment area theorem 2. Construct Mohrs circle for an element in pure shear q. From the circle, derive the following stress transformation equations: Pn=q sin2; Pt=q cos2. Obtain from the circle the principal stresses and show them on a sketch of properly oriented element. Show from the circle that the maximum and minimum shear stresses are q. Write about Haighs theory. The bar tapers uniformly in width from 100mm to 50mm. If E for the bar is 2x105N/mm2, determine the axial load on the bar. Define the Beam and the type of action and deformation it undergoes. Draw the S.F and B.M diagram for a S.S.B of span L loaded with UDL of W KN/m. A timber beam of rectangular section is to support a load 20KN/4 uniformly distributed over a span of 3.6m when beam is simply supported. If the depth of section is to be twice the breadth, and the stress in the timber is not to exceed 7N/mm2, find the dimensions of the cross section. A beam of square section, said a, is used as beam with one diagonal horizontal. The beam is subjected to a shear force F, at a section. Find the maximum shear in the cross section of the beam and draw the shear distribution diagram for the section. Write the expressions for maximum slope and deflection of a cantilever beam with a point load at free end. A cantilever 15cm wide and 20cm deep projects 1.5m out of a wall and is carrying a point load of 20KN at the free end. Find the slope and deflection of the cantilever at the free end using Moment Area Method. Take E=210GN/m2. Draw Mohrs circle for direct stresses of 45N/mm2 (tensile) and 25N/mm2 (compressive) and find the magnitude and direction of resultant stresses on planes making angles of 300 and 600 with the plane of first principal stress. Also find normal and tangential stress. Write about maximum shear stress theory. A bolt is acted upon by an axial pull of 16KN along with a transverse shear force of 10KN. Determine the diameter of the bolt required according to any four theories. Elastic limit of material is 250MPa, and F.O.S is 2.5, poissions ratio is 0.3. ***** Max Marks: 70
