What people do in order to achieve objectives which form the basis of an organisation.

Some form of management is required by which the activities of the organisation and the efforts of its members are directed and controlled towards the pursuit of these objectives. In globalisation , strategy and organisations are inextricable twined. Globalisation impacts on organisational behaviour and has placed greater emphasis on processes within the organisation rather than the function of an organisation. ( Laurie J mullins, Management and organisational behaviour,2007)

Through The forces of globalisation, competition and more demanding customers, the structure of many companies has become flatter, less hierarchical, more fluid and viral. The breakdown of hierarchies provides us with fertile ground on which to create a more democratic way of working. (gratton).

Economic growth and development in the new global economy has been preceded by a complex structural realignment of investment streams, the clustering of business enterprises, the transformation of the production process and the adoption of a niche marketing approach (Porter, 1998

Globalization has been driven by technological change and financial liberalization, and sustained by an appreciation among policy makers that an open, liberal, and rules-based international trading and financial system is essential to global economic progress. The new economy has become truly global in scope and substance. The free flow of capital, labour, goods and services within free trade regions, the development of new financial instruments and institutions, and instantaneous access to information and communication through the new digital networks, have created a fully integrated global economic system of tremendous scope and opportunity, and achieved a higher level of international economic inter-dependence and linkages than ever before (Gupta and Choudhry, 1997). It has replaced the rigid, hierarchical, top-down structure with a more flexible, horizontal, integrated work place model. It has also spotlighted the three essential skill requirements of

the information age. First, academic skills that provide the basic foundation to get and keep a job, and to achieve the best results. Those include an ability to communicate effectively, think critically, and continue to learn for life. Second, personal management skills such as the combination of positive attitudes, responsibility, and adaptability. Those would include time management, individual accountability, and meeting deadlines. Third, teamwork skills which require a personal disposition to work with other members of a diverse and varied group of individuals. Indeed, the greatest challenge and the most unique opportunity for new age managers is to garner the tremendous potential and remarkable creativity of a workforce environment that brings together human diversity, as well as professional and occupational dissimilarity in a harmonious and productive workplace structure.

The restructuring of the workplace has individualized the nature of work and led to the disaggregation of labour. The nature of work has undergone radical change from permanent, full-time with very few job changes, to part time, contract work, responding to private and public sector out-sourcing, and a large number of job changes during one's working career. In turn, this transformation of the work environment has diluted the concept of the welfare state, and punched holes in the social safety net. The challenge facing public policy in the new economy is to find a way for flexible work and flexible employment to continue to support social security entitlements and programs Source: http://www.allbusiness.com/management-companies-enterprises/39580281.html#ixzz1c3CsL9xl The modern horizontal structure of the new global corporation allows the process of shared ideas and new information that are the catalysts for creating new opportunities. In this global environment, corporations will require the skills to communicate with diverse groups of people. To do so effectively requires multilingual training and high levels of cross cultural awareness and sensitivity. Besides the positive effects of good communication skills among colleagues and with clients, effective communication is of particular importance to geographically dispersed and culturally diverse organizations. Sensitive communications build trust and send a common message that helps build a strong corporate culture and shared value systems.

Organisations are continuously adapting to this rapidly changing environment As we make headway into the 21st century, a new global economy is shaping the way organisations operate and manage their businesses. This new global economy is composed of a number of interactive forces; globalization, trade liberalisation, ethical practices, diversity and advanced information and communication technology. These interactive forces are becoming an essential part of the suite of armours an organisation needs to be equipped with, in a modern day market.

A modern day integrated market where globalisation have melted local borders of countries, allowing the free flow of knowledge and capital where the unrestricted exchange of goods and services between countries, facilitated by modern advances in transportation, has grown substantially . The individual forces are not on trial in this essay because you can certainly make the case for and against globalisation; for example from the positive changes seen in Taiwan where the whole living standards of a population has changed in the last 20 years or the stories out of Africa where some argue globalisation has further impoverished people. The shift of global economic power at an unprecedented pace since the industrial revolution, this pace is made possible by the advances made in information and communication technologies collapsing time and space.

The revolution of ICT and the phenomenon of the internet have also contributed in dissolving the national borders. The appearance and rapid rise of social media such as Facebook and Twitter , linking individuals across the world, made communication and relationships easier to develop and maintain. Business Grade social media platforms have also started to emerge with web applications such as socialtext, yammer, and salesforce chatter promoting enhanced collaboration, opening up silos and increasing transparency across multiple levels in the organisation.

This meant that the CEO or board of an organisation can stay in touch with all employees all the time, profiting from the collective wisdom and tapping into fresh insights and locating expertise. Social media is a powerful tool for improving collaboration, it is often compared to a garden which is nurtured correctly will blossom and if ignored will die rapidly. One challenge organisations will face in that regard is to maintain employees interest and encourage the use of the social media platform.

One story of using social media successfully in an organisation comes from my experience in dealing with public sector agencies in Australia. The department of premier and cabinet in South Australia has embraced the use of social media with measurable and quantifiable positive outcomes. This agency has embraced Socialtext to help its 1200 employees manage projects online, collaborate across department silos, share expertise and improve awareness of day-to-day activities.
