Grafti Task Force Update

The Butte County Sheriffs Office would like to thank Hobbie Auto Center, the Home Depot, the Oroville Optimist Club; and the City of Oroville (Code Enforcement Officer David Goyer) for their donations to the Sheriffs Team of Active Retired Seniors (S.T.A.R.S.) Graffiti Task Force. Graffiti damages our community and contributes to lost revenue; reduced retail sales; declines in property values; reduced use of transit systems in addition to the perception of blight and heightening fears of gang activity. We need the communitys support to eradicate graffiti, promote the publics safety, and enhance the beauty of our environment and quality of life, said Sheriff Smith. To report graffiti, call 530-538-7820 (S.T.A.R.S. in Oroville) or 530-891-2704 (S.T.A.R.S. in Chico). To make a tax deductible donation, send a check payable to: The S.T.A.R.S. and write Graffiti Task Force in the memo of the check and send to: Sheriffs Team of Active Retired Seniors, Butte County Sheriffs Office, 33 County Center Drive, Oroville, CA 95965.

Nursing Students Donate Food Baskets

The Student Nurses Association at Butte College is working to organize 20 Thanksgiving gift baskets for the colleges food pantry at the main campus to help needy college students this holiday. Each basket includes a turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, apple cider, marshmallows, cranberry, among other items. This is a program that nursing students have worked to grow each year to support our food pantry and students who need a little extra support this holiday season. There are many struggling students in need of our help and this is a great way for our nursing students to make a difference this season, said Susan Craig, Butte College faculty advisor, Student Nurses Association.

Glorious Sounds of the Season Dec. 2-4

CSU, Chicos Department of Music and the School of the Arts get the holiday season off to a resounding start with the annual Glorious Sounds of the Season! concerts. Proceeds from the performances go towards music scholarships for CSU, Chico students. Presented December 2 and 3 at 7:30 p.m. and December 4 at 2 p.m. in Harlen Adams Theatre, Glorious Sounds of the Season! has become a Chico-area holiday tradition. Sold-out performances have become the norm the past several years. Concert coordinator Dr. Royce Tevis recommends anyone interested in attending one of the concerts purchase a ticket sooner than later to insure getting a good seat. The community has really responded to the Glorious Sounds of the Season! concerts, noted Tevis. The participants as well as the students who receive the scholarships feel very thankful for their continued support. Glorious Sounds of the Season! feature various Music Department ensembles including the Wind Ensemble, Jazz XPress, A Cappella Choir, Brass Choir, Centennial Pipe Organ, Chamber Singers, and the University Chorus, as well as student and faculty soloists, small ensembles and performers from the Chico community, including the Childrens Choir of Chico. This year the small ensembles will feature a festive holiday trombone solo by faculty member Lloyd Robey; a piano duet by Department of Music faculty member Russ Burnham and his wife Jan; a guitar quartet; and a four hand piano piece. There will be several opportunities for the audience to join in with the performers by singing along on various seasonal favorites, such as Silent Night, Deck the Halls and Jiggle Bells. We are also including two readings this year, noted Tevis. The Night Before Christmas will be read by a special guest, and Lynn Elliott, retired Department of English chair, will read an excerpt from his book, A Childs Christmas in Wales. All in all, more than 25 musical selections will be performed. This is a unique holiday concert because the audience will hear such a variety of fabulous musical ensembles in one night, said Tevis. It is a fast-paced concert with groups performing not only from the stage area, but from the aisles of the theater as well. The audience has so much fun that when the concert is over they dont realize two hours have gone by. While proceeds from the concerts benefit music students in the form of scholarships, Tevis said the department never loses sight that Glorious Sounds of the Season! is also a way of giving back to the Chico community. The Music Department develops closer ties to the residents of Chico, and many locals look forward to this concert every year, he said. Glorious Sounds of the Season! really helps to put everyone in a holiday mood. Advance tickets, at $20 for all seats, are available in at the University Box Office (898-6333); add $2 for tickets purchased at the door. For disability-related accommodations, please call 898-4325.

Toy Safety Tips For The Holiday Season

(StatePoint) When buying gifts for children, dont just buy whatever is on their wish list. Do some research first. That way, the gifts can be age-appropriate and safe. Toy-related injuries are an all too common occurrence. In 2009, an estimated 250,100 children under age 15 were sent to the hospital for toy-related injuries, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. And these injuries are on the rise. Select toys to suit the age, abilities, skills and interest level of the intended child, says Dr. H. Garry Gardner, chair of the Council on Injury, Violence & Poison Prevention at the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). Toys too advanced may pose safety hazards for younger children. The AAP is offering these tips to help parents make safe consumer choices for their children: Make sure the toy is specified for the age of your child. Government regulations on toy diameter and length will prevent your baby or toddler from choking. Never leave a baby unattended with toys and games containing small parts. Toys that plug into an electrical outlet are a no-no for the under 10 set. Prevent burns and electrical shocks by buying battery-operated toys for younger kids. Make sure that the battery is in a secured compartment that cannot be accessed by the child. Buttons, batteries, and magnets pose a serious health risk when swallowed, causing stomach and intestinal problems and possible death. Call your pediatrician or other health care provider immediately if your child swallows one of these items. Store toys in a designated location, such as on a shelf or in a toy chest, and keep older kids toys away from young children. Read instructions carefully on a toy before allowing your child to play with it. Dont leave children unattended with balloons. Un-inflated or broken balloons are a choking hazard for children under 8. Watch out for pull toys with strings more than 12 inches in length. They could be a strangulation hazard for babies. Of course, choosing safe toys is only half the battle. You also have to pick one they will like. When it comes to toys, and ultimately, learning, active play always wins out over passive entertainment like TV, says Dr. Gardner. For a baby, anything that is eye-catching or makes noise is perfect. For an older child, whether its a board game, a magazine subscription, or the latest Justin Bieber record, something that will sustain his or her interest will make a meaningful gift. For more gift-giving ideas and safety tips, visit the AAPs website for parents, www. healthychildren.org. A little research can go a long way in making sure your holidays are happy and healthy.

Great Holiday Craft Projects For Families

(StatePoint) Now is the time to plan and decorate for the holidays. From adorning the Christmas tree, to taking a family photo for greeting cards, it can be a challenge to create a unique experience while staying on a budget. You can, however, meet both these goals by taking a DIY (do-it-yourself) approach. The best part about doing it yourself is the memorable moments you spend with your loved ones. This is after all, the reason for the season. Also, as a family, you can create lasting gifts and keepsakes that set you apart from the crowd. Save yourself a stressful, expensive day at the mall buying stocking stuffers and holiday dcor, and plan a pre-holiday family get-together instead. By taking advantage of everybodys crafting skills, you can create personalized ornaments and gifts made by the family, for the family. Make sure you have plenty of craft supplies on hand that are appropriate for all ages. Provide glitter, paint, ribbon, fabric, popsicle sticks, crayons and paper -- and get to work! You can either work without direction, creating ideas from scratch, or provide your guests with instructions for specific projects. Decorating with pine cones and creating paper chain garlands from old magazines are a few ideas to get you started. And the terrific thing is these supplies are free! For creative inspiration, there are a number of websites that provide step by step instructions for creating homemade holiday dcor. Kids, grandparents, uncles, cousins, everybody can participate, no matter what their skill level. This get-together can also double as a perfect photo opportunity. Its easy to get a family portrait when you have everyone gathered in one place. And the holidays are the best time to share family photos with friends. Use these photos to create Christmas cards, ornaments and personalized bookmarks and notebooks. Or create greeting cards and Christmas ornaments that are unique and crafty. There are several websites that can spin a unique twist on your photos so they really stand out in the sea of holiday greetings that adorn your familys and friends refrigerators or your Christmas tree. For example, www. snapily.com gives your photographs 3Ddepth and flip-book style animated effect (i.e., two images flip as you rotate the card back and forth) to convey emotion and humor. So dont be afraid to plan something a little goofy for that photo shoot. With a little craftiness, and a little wit, you can really customize the look and feel of your holiday this year.

AT THE GYM

ANTIQUE TOOL TALK # 57

Well Folks, here we are ready for another exciting day at your tool museum. So pull up a chair and if its morning for you, pour yourself a cup & if its evening, you may prefer a cool one. Either way, lets visit awhile. I want to tell you about some important donations & developments. 1st, we hope you can look over our newly upgraded web page. Just go to www.boltsantiquetools.com or go to your search engine & type in Tool museums or bolts Antique Tool Museum. If its Google or Yahoo, we will be close to the top. Our web master DRT Productions (Danny Ray Thomas) has just nished the upgrade. We are proud to say we are averaging approx 32,000 hits per month & have for the last 18 months. Its really interesting to review the countries the hits came from. When you consider we get a hit about every minute & a half 24 hrs a day, we dont think thats too shabby. Well lets visit about some really historic donations that have come in lately. There have been so many cant begin to cover them all. One donation consists of 3 really old dental tools. Teeth extractors, not sure of the vintage. Would take them past Dr. Gilberts ofce and ask but knowing him & his staff, they would want to know if they work and try them out on me. These tools are on Bd # In Area P-1. With this addition we were able to expand our service. We have had surgical tools for a long time. Mr. Russell used these the most but he is on unlimited leave of absence so therere not getting used much now. Too bad, as we had our survival rate up to almost 50%. The last time Mr. Russell used one of our amputated saws, he broke the blade. That didnt slow him down; he just substituted the battery operated chain saw displayed in Area D-1 Bd # Item # . The neat lady that donated this saw will be glad to know it was put to good use. Now lets take a look in Area E. In Display Case #2 and look over the historic set of Air Craft sockets donated by Ron in San Angelo, Tex. This set is Japanese, salvaged by Rons Dad in Japan 1945. The set is a copy of one by Strett 1913. Only one socket in it has over been used. You will notice in Display Case # 1 we have the Sterrett set. Have had it for a few years. In Area G Bd # 47 Item # you can look over the Hub Cap Wrench made for a White Car. Made from to Just too many to cover today. We now have about 10,500 on display. Needless to say, we are running out of room -- sure need a building stretcher. When we get our Endowment Fund off and running, our goal is to build it to the point the income from it can help towards new facilities or expanding the present buildings. Any way lots going on so drop by 1650 Broderick St, in historic downtown Oroville, Ca. Open 7 days a week Mon-Sat 10:00 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Sun. 11:45 3:45 p.m. Try to allow extra time so we can talk tools Antique tools, that is, By Bud Bolt
