TE-502 GEOMETRIC DESIGN AND HIGHWAY SAFETY

Highway history, planning and development process; Urban highway and Rural highway;
Horizontal alignment and Vertical alignment; Types of at-grade intersections, turning lanes
and channelization; Basic types of Grade Separations; Warrants for interchanges and
grade separation; Interchange-type determination; Lane balance and basic number of lanes;
Safety Effectiveness of Highway Design: access control, alignment, cross sections and
intersections; Related Computer Softwares.

TE-503 PAVEMENT ANALYSIS AND DESIGN

Focusing on the empirical as well mechanistic-empirical design procedures both for


highway and airfield pavement systems. Introduction to multi-layered elastic and slab
theories, properties of pavement materials and methods of characterization, stochastic
treatment of design variables, economic principles of design alternates and the effect of
environment upon pavement performance. Review of design methods including;
AASHTO, AI, PCA and USACE along with use of computer aided design software.

Human Vehicular and Traffic Characteristics; Composition and measurement of traffic


volume; Measurement of speeds, Speed zoning and restrictions; Travel time and delay
studies; Types of parking facilities and Design of car parks; Accident patterns and
characteristics, Collision and condition diagrams; Types and functions of traffic control

TE-505 AIRPORT PLANNING AND DESIGN

TE-507 PAVEMENT EVALUATION AND REHABILITATION

This course is intended to assist pavement engineers in developing the most reliable and
cost-effective rehabilitation alternatives for asphalt pavements. It addresses the
rehabilitation process for asphalt pavements in a logical sequence including the evaluation

of the existing pavement structural and functional condition, assessment of needs and
assignment of feasible alternatives (from four categories of reconstruction, restoration,
recycling, and resurfacing), and the selection of the preferred rehabilitation alternative
based on life-cycle costs and other factors.

TE-508 PLANNING FOR TRAFFIC SAFETY AND INJURY PREVENTION

Issues involved in Transportation safety; Traffic Crashes and the Need for Safety; Safety
Systems Approach: the road traffic system, road safety analysis, policy and programs;
Diagnosis of Road Accident Problems: process of diagnosis, data analysis and presentation,
site investigations, and problem analysis; Development of Countermeasures: principle of
countermeasure development, countermeasure selection, and cost-effectiveness;
Application of Road Safety Audit and Safety Audit Process; Monitoring and Program
Evaluation: the need for monitoring, monitoring techniques , and analysis of accident
statistics.

TE-509 PAVEMENT MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS

This course is intended to cover the basic aspects of the system approach to pavement
management; that is, the framework for good pavement design, data requirements,
pavement evaluation, structural design and economic evaluation, works programming and
prioritization.

TE-510 HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENTS

The nature, engineering characteristics, and selection of materials for highway and airport
pavements; Composition, physical behavior and performance of bituminous materials and
mixtures; Concrete mixes for rigid pavements; Durability of concrete and Asphalt mixes;
Asphalt Mix Production and Placement; Polymer materials their chemical, physical and
engineering properties; Selection and Application of Construction Equipment; Earth
moving Equipments including excavators, dozers, scrapers, etc.; Finishing Equipments:
graders, trimmers etc; Trucks and Hauling Equipments; Concrete Equipments; Drilling and
Blasting Rock; Cranes, Draglines and Clamshells; Piles Driving Equipments; Equipment

TE-511 HARBOUR AND DOCK ENGINEERING

TE-512 BRIDGE AND TUNNEL ENGINEERING

Investigations and Planning for Bridges; Types of Bridges; General Principles of design;
Sub-structures; Foundations; super Structure for Arch Bridges; Girder Bridges; Low Cost
Bridges; Permanent Small Bridges; Loads on Bridges; Designs of Bridge Foundations and
Bridges; Inspection and Maintenance of Bridges; Testing and strengthening of Bridges;
protection and Training Works for Bridges. General Aspects and Alignment of Tunnels;
Drilling; Blasting; Tunnelling; Shafts; Ventilation, Lighting and Drainage of Tunnels;
Tunnel Lining; Safety in Tunnelling; Kojac Tunnel; Euro-Tunnel.

TE-513 ASPHALT MIX DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION

The course primarily deals with Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA). Topics include manufacture of
asphalt and aggregate, design of HMA mix, Characterization of HMA in terms of
engineering properties, construction, performance/distress, and maintenance. The course
also includes special mixtures such recycling and additives including polymers.

TE-514 PAVEMENT DISTRESS IDENTIFICATION AND PRESERVATION

Description of pavement distress types outlined in Strategic Highway Research Program


(SHRP), Distress Identification Manual for the Long-Term Pavement Performance Project
(LTPP). Recognition and measurement of different pavement distress severity levels as
outlined in the manual. Mapping of pavement distress using the SHRP/LTPP. Based upon

distress surveys, identification of feasible treatments for the pavement. Selection of most
appropriate treatment for a given pavement based on a combination of economic
considerations, anticipated benefits, and other factors.

TE-515 STATISTICAL ANALYSIS WITH COMPUTER APPLICATION


Basic statistical theory, hypothesis testing, analysis of variance, correlation and regression
analysis, sampling theory and quality control and quality assurance methodologies
(QC/QA). Use of statistical software packages.
