This course is intended to assist pavement engineers in developing the most reliable and
cost-effective rehabilitation alternatives for asphalt pavements. It addresses the
rehabilitation process for asphalt pavements in a logical sequence including the evaluation
3
of the existing pavement structural and functional condition, assessment of needs and
assignment of feasible alternatives (from four categories of reconstruction, restoration,
recycling, and resurfacing), and the selection of the preferred rehabilitation alternative
based on life-cycle costs and other factors.
Issues involved in Transportation safety; Traffic Crashes and the Need for Safety; Safety
Systems Approach: the road traffic system, road safety analysis, policy and programs;
Diagnosis of Road Accident Problems: process of diagnosis, data analysis and presentation,
site investigations, and problem analysis; Development of Countermeasures: principle of
countermeasure development, countermeasure selection, and cost-effectiveness;
Application of Road Safety Audit and Safety Audit Process; Monitoring and Program
Evaluation: the need for monitoring, monitoring techniques , and analysis of accident
statistics.
This course is intended to cover the basic aspects of the system approach to pavement
management; that is, the framework for good pavement design, data requirements,
pavement evaluation, structural design and economic evaluation, works programming and
prioritization.
