III B. Tech I Semester (R05) Supplementary Examinations, November 2011 BASIC REINFORCED CONCRETE DESIGN & DRAWING (Civil Engineering) Time: 3 hours Max Marks: 80 Use of IS 456-2000 and IS 800 is permitted. Assume missing data suitably if any. Part A (Answer any one question, 1 X 32 marks) 1 Design the roof slab for a singled building of clear dimensions 3.25m x 7.5m with wall thickness 300mm. Assume that access is provided to the roof. A weathering course of thickness 120mm and unit weight 17.5kN/m3 is to be provided over the slab. Use M 20 and Fe 415 steel. Draw the cross section of the slab showing the reinforcement details. (a) (b) How will the problem be solved if the point of application of the load and the centre of gravity of the section do not coincide? Design a short column 25 cm square in cross-section for an axial load of 400 kN, and moments of 30kNm and 30kNm about the two axes. Draw the drawings showing the design details. Part B (Answer any three questions, 3 X 16 marks) 3 (a) A R.C rectangular beam of M20 grade concrete is 300mm wide and 600mm deep (overall).it is reinforced with 3 numbers of 20mm dia. Mild steel bars in the tension zone with an effective cover of 40mm. Determine the moment of resistance of the section by using working stress method (b) The mid span section of a simply supported rectangular RC beam is subjected to a maximum bending moment of 30kN-m. The breadth and effective depth of the section are 250mm and 450mm respectively. Use M20 concrete and Fe415 steel. For design of beam use working stress method (a) i) Define characteristic strength. ii) Determine the mean target strength required for the mix design of M25 concrete, assuming moderate quality control. Why is cube strength different from the cylinder strength for the same grade of concrete? What is the affect of amount of compression reinforcement on the deflection due to: (a) shrinkage and (b) creep Design a square footing for a rectangular column 300mm x 500mm, reinforced with 6-25 bars, and carrying a service load of 1250kN. Assume soil with an allowable pressure of 200kN/m2 at a depth of 1.25m below ground. Assume Fe415 grade steel for both column and footing, and M20 grade concrete for the footing and M25 grade concrete for the column.

(a) Stirrups may be opened or closed. When does it become mandatory to use closed stirrups? (b) Why is an upper limit c, max imposed on the shear strength of a reinforced concrete beam. With shear reinforcement? (a) Calculate the limit moment capacity of a rectangular cross-section reinforced beam for the following data: b = 400 mm, d = 600 mm, Ast = 560 mm2, fy = 415 N/mm2, fck = 20N / mm2. State whether the section is over- reinforced or under- reinforced. (b) Determine the moment capacity of a doubly-reinforced rectangular cross-section beam for the following data: b = 300 mm, d = 600mm, Ast=1200 mm2, fy = 415 N/mm2, fck=20 N/mm2, ASC=660mm2. *****
