III B.Tech I Semester Supplementary Examinations, November 2011 HYDRAULIC MACHINERY AND SYSTEMS ( Mechanical Engineering) Time: 3 hours Max Marks: 80 Answer any FIVE Questions All Questions carry equal marks

1. (a) A jet of liquid coming out of a nozzle is 25m/sec and it exerts a force of 4000N on a xed at plate held normal to the jet. If the velocity of jet is increased at 30m/sec, nd the increase in force acting on the same plate. (b) A nozzle of 5cm diameter discharges water with a velocity of 50m/sec and strikes a xed at plate. Find the force acting on the plate when the plate is vertical and when plate is inclined to the jet by 40 0 . [8+8] 2. (a) What do you understand by gross head, net head and specic energy? (b) Explain with the help of velocity diagram, how the eciency of a Kaplan turbine is maintained maximum in the event of load variation on the turbine shaft. How does this make Kaplan turbine superior to a Propeller turbine in its performance at part load. [6+10] 3. What are the characteristic curves of a hydraulic turbine? How are they useful to a practical engineer? How are small scale models useful in obtaining these curves for a proposed turbine of a hydroelectric installation? [16] 4. Derive an expression for the head lost due to friction in the delivery pipe of a reciprocating pump with and without air vessel. [16] 5. (a) What do you mean by manometric eciency, mechanical eciency and overall eciency of a centrifugal pump. (b) The diameters of an impeller of a centrifugal pump at inlet and outlet are 20 cm and 40 cm respectively. Determine the minimum speed for starting the pump if it works against head of 25 m. [8+8] 6. (a) What do you understand by characteristic curves of a pump? What is the signicance of the characteristic curves. (b) Find the number of pumps required to take water from a deep well under a total head of 89 m. All the pumps are identical and are running at 800 r.p.m. the specic speed of each pump is given as 25 while the rated capacity of each pump is 0.16 m3 /s. [8+8] 7. (a) A hydraulic press has a ram of 300 mm diameter and a plunger of 45 mm diameter. Find the weight lifted by the hydraulic press when the force applied at the plunger is 50 N. (b) Dene term, the hydraulic accumulator. Obtain an expression for the capacity of a hydraulic accumulator. Dierentiate between hydraulic accumulator and dierential accumulator. [8+8] 1 of 2

8. (a) A pipe line of length 2100 m is used for transmitting 103 kW. The pressure at the inlet of the pipe is 392.4 N/ cm2 . If the eciency of transmission is 80%, nd the diameter of the pipe. Take f = 0.005. (b) What do you understand by transmission eciency of a pipe? Obtain a condition for maximum eciency and prove that it is 66.7%. [8+8]
